Between1833and1837,thepublishersofa"pennypress"proved

thatalow-pricedpaper,editedtointerestordinarypeople,could

winwhatamountedtoamasscirculationforthetimesandthereby

attractanadvertisingvolumethatwouldmakeitindependent.

Thesewerepapersforthecommoncitizenandwerenottiedtothe

interestsofthebusinesscommunity,likethemercantilepress,or

dependentforfinancialsupportuponpoliticalpartyallegiance.Itdid

notnecessarilyfollowthatallthepennypaperswouldbesuperiorin

theirhandingofthenewsandopinionfunctions.Butthedoorwas

openforsometomakeimportantjournalisticadvances.

Thefirstofferingsofapennypapertendedtobehighlysensational;

humanintereststoriesovershadowedimportantnews,andcrime

andsexstorieswerewritteninfulldetail.Butasthepennypaper

attractedreadersfromvarioussocialandeconomicbrackets,its

sensationalismwasmodified.Theordinaryreadercametowanta

betterproduct,too.Apopularizedstyleofwritingandpresentation

ofnewsremained,butthepennypaperbecamearespectable

publicationthatofferedsignificantinformationandeditorial

leadership.Oncethefirstofthesuccessfulpennypapershad

showntheway,laterventurescouldenterthecompetitionatthe

higherlevelofjournalisticresponsibilitythepioneeringpapershad

reached.

ThiswasthepatternofAmericannewspapersintheyearsfollowing

thefoundingoftheNewYorkSunin1833.Thesun,publishedby

BenjaminDay,enteredthelistsagainst11otherdailies.Itwastiny

incomparison;butitwasbrightandreadable,anditpreferred

humaninterestfeaturestoimportantbutdullpoliticalspeech

reports.Ithadapolicereporterwritingsquibsofcrimenewsinthe
