BriefIntroduction**Name:

CalledWaitan(外滩）byChinese,meansWaterfront.Butsincecolonialtimes,thispremiermilewasoriginallynamedbytheBritishas“Bund”.“Bund”derivesfromAnglo-Indianwordforanembankmentalongamuddywaterfrontandtodaythistermstillsurvives.在一百五十年前，上海仅是江南沿海的一个中等县城，航运事业很不发达，人们没必要，也没能力在沿江修筑堤岸，所以除东门黄浦江岸外大部分江岸是一片自然滩地，退潮时，江水聚滞在河床中心，露出一大片滩地，涨潮时，江水又没过河滩。黄浦江是上海的主要河道，由于江宽水急，逆水而行的船只就须拉纤行走。几百年来，纤夫的足迹就在黄浦江滩踩出一条曲折多弯的小道，人们称之“纤道”，这纤道就是外滩最早的路了。在上海的地名习惯用词中，一般把河流的上游叫作“里”，河流的下游叫作“外”，今苏州河入黄浦江口的第一座桥叫作“外白渡桥”，依次向里的桥也俗称“里白渡桥”（今乍浦路桥）、三白渡桥（今四川路桥）。进入上海县城附近的黄浦江在陆家浜出口处形成一个急弯，于是上海人就以陆家浜为界，其上游称为“里黄浦”，下游称为‘外黄浦”。里黄浦的河滩叫作“里黄浦滩”，又称“里滩”，外黄浦的滩地就叫作“外黄浦滩”，又称“黄浦滩”或“外滩”。清康熙二十二年，清军收复了台湾，二十四年（168年），康熙皇帝颁布了《驰海禁令》，即放松和放宽了从明初开始实行的禁止近海航运和贸易的“海禁”政策，中国近海航运和贸易又开始活跃起来了。位于中国南北海岸线中点的上海，是长江的出海日，又背倚中国最富庶的杭嘉湖平原，很快成为中国沿海的重要港口，与上海县城小东门、大东门、小南门相近的黄浦江滩相继建起了码头、堆栈、商行，从而促进了上海的城市经济和建设的发展。大概在康熙四十年后，从陆家浜到方浜（今方浜路）的黄浦江滩地逐渐消失在不断兴建的各种建筑中，从此，‘外滩”的实际区域就是今方浜路到苏州河边的黄浦江岸。
