HowtoPlayChineseChess

Thispageisdesignedforbothnativeandnon-nativeChinesespeakers.IhavepreparedanalternativesetofChineseChesspiecesthatarerepresentedbypicturesinsteadofChinesecharacters,soyoudon’thavetounderstandChinesecharactersinordertolearnhowtoplaythisgame.

ThegoalofthispageistohelpyougetstartedinplayingChineseChess.Onceyouarefamiliarwiththebasicmovesandrulesofthegame,youmightwanttostartlearningdeeperstrategiesandtacticsforthegame.Todothat,Isuggestyouvisitthetutorialsectionofasitecalledchess.

Introduction

ChineseChessisatraditionalboardgamethathasbeenaroundforthousandsofyears.LikeWesternChess,ithasatotalof32pieces,itisplayedby2players,andthegoalofthegameistocaptureyouropponent’smostimportantpiece:theGeneralortheKing.UnlikeWesternChess,ChineseChesshas7classesofpieces(General,Advisor,Elephant,Horse,Chariot,Cannon,andPawn);whereasWesternChesshas6classesofpieces(King,Queen,Bishop,Knight,Rook,andPawn).Also,ChineseChessisplayedonalargerboard.

ThePieces

ThepiecesinChineseChessarerepresentedbyChinesecharacters.Also,somepiecesofthesameclassforbothsidesaresometimesrepresentbydifferentcharacters.Ifyoudon’tunderstandChinesecharacters,IhopethepicturesetthatIhavepreparedareeasytorecognizeandmakesense.

ThisistheChineseChessboard.Itismadeupof10x9gridlines,andthepiecesisplacedontheintersectionsofthelines;thiscountfor90possiblepositionsontheboard.

Theboardisdividedintotwozones.Tophalfoftheboardisyouropponent’szone(enemyzone),andthebottomhalfoftheboardisyourzone(friendlyzone).

Someoftheintersectionsaresurroundedbywedges,whichserveasindicatorsforthestartingpositionoftheCannon(Bomber)andPawn(Transport)pieces.

Noticeatthebaselinecenterofbothzonesthereisa3x3gridlinkedbyacross,andthatisyoursandyouropponent’spalace(base).

SettingupTheBoard

Thefollowingdiagramshowsthesetupoftheboardatthebeginningofagame.Thetophalfoftheboardissetupusingthecharacterpieceset,thebottomhalfoftheboardissetupusingthepicturepieceset.

TheMoves

BasicMovement

Allpiececaneithermovehorizontally/vertically,diagonally,oracombinationofthetwo.NopiecescanevermovethroughanotherpieceexceptCannon(Bomber).

Capturing

Youcancaptureandopponent’spiecebymovingoneofyourpiecesintothepositionthatiscurrentlyoccupiedbythatopponent’spiece.

Note:Cannon(Bomber)hasspecialwayofcapturingpieces.

Blocking

Sometimesapiecemaynotcompleteacertainmovebecauseanotherpiece(eitherfriendorfoe)isblockingitsway.

Checking

CheckingoccurswhentheGeneral(CommandHQ)ofonesideisbeingthreatenedbytheopposingside.

General(CommandHQ)Face-offRestriction

Youcannotmakeamovethatwillresultinwhat’scalledaGeneralFace-offsituation.Thissituationistrueifyoucandrawastraightverticallinethatintersectsbothsides’General(CommandHQ)andwithnootherpiecesin-betweenthetwoGenerals(CommandHQs).

General/CommandHQ

Description

Thisisthemostimportantpieceofthegame.Whenyoulosethispiece,youlosethegame.

Movement

Movehorizontallyorverticallyoneunitatatime.Also,itcannevermoveoutofthepalace(base).

Advisor/Anti-AircraftArtillery(AAA)

Description

Thisisadefensiveunit.ItprovidesclosedefensivesupportfortheGeneral(CommandHQ).

Movement

Movediagonallyinanydirectionsoneunitatatime.LiketheGeneral(CommandHQ),itcanneverleavethepalace(base).

Elephant/Surface-To-AirMissile(SAM)

Description

Thisisalsoadefensiveunit.ItprovidesdefensivesupportfortheGeneral(CommandHQ).

Movement

Movediagonallyinanydirectionstwounitsatatime.Itcannevermoveintoyouropponent’szone.TheElephant(SAM)canbeblockedbyapiecein-betweenitscurrentpositionanditsintendeddestination.

ThediagramattheupperrightcornerillustratesthattheElephant(SAM)pieceontheleftcouldnotmakeamovetoitsdestinationmarkedbyXbecauseitisblockedbyanotherpiece.

ThesquaresymbolsinthediagramindicatestheothertwopositionswheretheElephant(SAM)couldpossiblymoveto.

Horse/AttackHelicopter(Gunship)

Description

ThispieceissimilartotheKnightinWesternChess.

Movement

Movehorizontallyorverticallyinanydirectionsbyoneunit,thenimmediatelyfollowbyamovediagonallyoneunittowardthedirectionawayfromitsoriginalposition.

IfthereisapieceimmediatelyadjacenttotheHorse(Gunship),thenitcannotmovetowardthatdirection.

ThediagramattheupperrightcornerillustratesthattheHorse(Gunship)pieceontheleftcouldnotmakeamovetoeitherofitsdestinationsmarkedbyXbecauseitisblockedbyapieceimmediatelyadjacenttoit.

Chariot/Interceptor

Description

ThispieceissimilartotheRookinWesternChess.

Movement

Movehorizontallyorverticallyinanydirectionsbyanynumberofunits,providedthatitdoesn’tmovethroughanotherpiece.

Cannon/Bomber

Description

Thisisauniquepiecethatcanbeveryinterestingtoplay.

Movement

Movehorizontallyorverticallyinanydirectionsbyanynumberofunits,providedthatitdoesn’tmovethroughanotherpiece.

SpecialCapturingRule
