AsthebirthplacefortheManchurias,LiaoninghasrelicsandruinsoftheQingDynasty.TheShenyangImperialPalaceisawell-preservedimperialpalacesecondonlytoBeijing'sForbiddenCity.FamoushistoricalandculturalcitiesofChinainLiaoningincludeShenyang,Dalian,Anshan,andWushun.NationalkeyscenicareasintheprovinceincludetheQianMountains,theYalujiangRiver,theXingchengBeach,theGoldenRockBeach,theDalianBeach,LushunkouPort,thePhoenixMountain,andtheCaveatBenxi.

TheShengyangImperialPalacewasbuiltin1625andisconsideredtobeoneofthebestimperialresidencesinthecountry.TheImperialPalacewasbuiltforNuerhachi(1559-1626)andHuangtaiji(1592-1643),twofoundingemperorsofthepre-QingDynastyperiod.LocatedinthecenteroftheoldcityofShenyang,thepalacecoversanareaof60,000squaremeterswithabout300roomsin70buildings.AmongthesebuildingsaretheChongzheng(SupremePolitics)Hall,whichhadbeenthethronehall;thePhoenixTower,whichwasthehighestofShenyangatthetime;andDazheng(GrandPolitics)Hall,whichwasthefirsthallconstructedofthepalacecomplex.TheformerimperialresidenceembodiesaharmoniousblendoftheHan,Mongol,andManchuarchitecturalstyles.

TheMuseumofSteamLocomotivesisthelargestofitskindinChina,havinganareaof10,000squaremeters.ItislocatedbetweentheSujiatunMarshallingYardandShenyangRailwayBureau.OndisplayaremorethanadozensteamlocomotivesmadeattheturnofthecenturyanduptothefiftiesbytheUnitedStates,Japan,theUSSR,Czechoslovakia,Poland,Germany,Romania,Belgium,andChina.Here,touristsmaydriveasteamlocomotiveforashortdistance,sharingtheexperienceofanenginedriver;theymayalsovisitarollingstockplantoradispatcher'soffice.

TheZhaolingTombisthelargestamongthethreeQingimperialtombsintheNortheast.ItcontainstheQingdynastyfounderHuangtaijiandhiswifeandconcubines.Builtin1643,itisalsocalledtheNorthernTombduetoitslocationinthenorthofShenyangandcoversanareaof45,000squaremeters.Itconsistsofafortress,aguardtower,theLong'an(BoundlessGrace)Hall,theAltarHall,theTabletPavilion,theTumulus,roadways,ornamentalcolumns,andmarbleanimals.ThearchitecturalstyleofZhaolingisaremarkablecombinationoftheimperialtombconstructionoftheancientHansandtheearlyQingcastle-typebuilding.

TheDalianBeachliesonthesouthernseashoreofDalianCityandisafamoussummerresort.Alongthe30-kilometercoasthighwayarescenicspotssuchastheBangchui(Hammer-Shaped)Islet,TigerBeachPark,Xiuyue(Crescent)Hill,FuFamilyVillage,Baiyun(WhiteCloud)Heights,Xinghai(NextofStars)Park,andtheHeishi(BlackRock)Reef.Touristsmayswiminthesea,tanonthebeach,gatherbeautifulshellsintheshallows,fishontherocks,orenjoyaniceseafoodfeast.

QianShan(QianMountain)islocated20kilometerssoutheastofthecityofAnshanandisawell-knownscenicspotofNortheastChina.Therowsoflushgreenpeaksarestuddedwithjaggedrocksofpeculiarshapes.Half-hiddenbehindtheancientconifersareTaoistandBuddhistmonasteriesandnunneriesaswellaspagodasandstelesthatwereerectedduringtheMing(1368-1644)andQing(1644-1911)Dynastieswhenthetwobeliefsheldmuchswayovertheimperialcourt.
