fromMissouri.Afewweekslater,hedesertedandwentoffwithhisbrotherfortheNewTerritoryofNevada.Afterfailingasprospector,TwainservedascityeditorfortheVirginiaCityEnterprise.Oneyearlater,in1865,arealliarandajumfrogbroughtTwainintonationalprominence.NewYork’sTheSaturdayPresspublishedhis“CelebratedJumFrogofCalaverasCounty”andnewspapersthroughouttheUnitedStatesreprintedit.In1867,thatjumfrogwasbindedwithothershortsketchesbyTwainashisfirstbook.Intheme,asearlyas1866,Twainbeganlecturing.Hetoldstoriesabouthimselfandabouthistravels,whichhetomakeasacorrespondent.TwainvisitedtheSandwichIslandsand,in1867,setsailfortheHolyLand.Later,hetouredFranceandItalygatheringmaterialforTheInnocentsAbroad.Thisbook,publishedin1869,trulyestablishedTwain’srepu
