RecentstudiesofsedimentintheNorthAtlantic’sdeepwatersrevealpossiblecyclicalpatternsinthehistoryofEarth’sclimate.Therockfragmentsinthesesedimentsaretoolargetohavebeentransportedtherebyoceancurrents;theymusthavereachedtheirpresentlocationsbytravelinginlargeicebergsthatfloatedlongdistancesfromtheirpointoforiginbeforemelting.GeologistGerardBondnoticedthatsomeofthesedimentgrainswerestainedwithironoxide,evidencethattheyoriginatedinlocaleswhereglaciershadoverrunoutcropsofredsandstone.Bond’sdetailedanalysisofdeep-watersedimentcoresshowedchangesinthemixofsedimentsourcesovertime:theproportionofthesered-stainedgrainsfluctuatedbackandforthfromlowsof5percenttohighsofabout17percent,andthesefluctuationoccurredinanearlyregular1,500-yearcycle.
