AfterthesuccessfulofthefirstAnglo-SaxonfromnorthwestenEuropequicklytookcontrolofeconomicassetsandpoliticalpowerintheUnitedStates,andtheymaintainedthiscontrol,togreaterorlesserdegree,eversince.SuccessivewavesofimmigratesfromothepartsoftheworldstruggledlongandhardtoassimilatedintothemainstreamofAmericanlife.

Howeveronlypartofthemsucceededandsharedinthe''Americandream'';othersbecauseofthedifferentethnicorracialcharacteristics(mostfromdominantgroups)havrbeenexcludedandcouldn'tparticipatefulllyinAmericanlife.TheresultisthatthisdiscriminationhasbeenasevereandcontinuingracialtensionintheU.S,Particularlysincethecivivalrightsdemons,gehettoriots,andotherunrestinthe1960s,raceandethnicrelationshavebeenamajorpreoccupationofsocialscientists,politiciansandthegeneralpublic.
