Earthquakesmayrightlyberankedasoneofthemostdestructiveforcesknowntoman:sincerecordsbegantobewrittendown,ithasbeenestimatedthatearthquakerelatedfatalitieshavenumberedinthemillions,andthatearthquakerelateddestructionhasbeenbeyondcalculation.Thegreaterpartofsuchdamageandlossoflifehasbeenduetocollapseofbuildingsandtheeffectsofrockslides,floods,fire,disease,tsunamisgiganticseawaves,andotherobservableeventsresultingfromearthquakes,ratherthanfromthequakesthemselves.
Thegreatmajorityofallearthquakesoccurintwospecificgeographicareas.OnesuchareacoversthePacificOceananditsborderinglandmasses.TheotherextendsfromtheEastIndiestotheAtlasMountains,includingtheHimalayas,Iran,Turkey,andtheAlpineregions.Itisinthesetwogreatbeltsorzonesthatallearthquakestakeplace;theymay,however,happenanywhereatanytime.
Thiselementoftheunknownhasforcenturiesaddedgreatlytothedreadandhorrorsurroundingearthquakes,butinrecenttimestherehavebeenindicationsthatearthquakeforecastmaybepossible.Byanalyzingchangesinanimalbehavior,patternsofmovementsintheearth’sshell,variationsintheearth’sforceofattraction,andthefrequencywithwhichminorearthshakesareobserved,scientistshaveshownincreasingsuccessinexpectingwhenandwhereearthquakeswillstrike.Asaresult,aworldwideearthquakewarningnetworkisalreadyinoperationandhashelpedtoprepareforandthuslessenthevastdestructionthatmightotherwisehavebeentotallyunexpected.

Populationcontrolhaslongbeenasubjectofdiscussionamongresearchers.Somehavearguedthatthesupplyofgoodlandislimited.Inordertofeedalargepopulation,
