time,the
Universityof
texas
ataustin
has
held
a
prominent
position
amongnationaland
internationaluniversities.century.
Beingpreparedforopportunityisourstrategicgoal.Thenewmasterplanlaysoutaframeworkofstrongideasthatwillshapehowweinvestintelligently,andwithconsistency,whenopportunitiesarise.Withthisdocumentasourguide,weareinpositiontoaccommodategrowthandenhanceourexistingcampus,aswellasextend,ifneeded,ouroutstandingutilityandfacilitiesinfrastructuretonewacademicandresearchventures.We
arepoisedtoengagewithbusinessesandneighborhoodssurroundingthecampusonissuesofhousingandsocialenvironmentsthatsupportacademicachievement.We
arealsoinpositiontorevitalizetheWallerCreek/SanJacintoBlvd.corridorasaplacethatknitstogetherourcorecampustothewestwithourcentralcampustotheeastwhileservingagreaterroleinimprovingmobilityoncampus.achieving
and
sustaining
this
levelofexcellence
comes
through
thoughtfulplanning,dedicated
implementation
and
a
keen
focus
onthe
timeless
mission
of
the
university.Ouruniversityhasalonghistoryofplanning,thenbuildingandsupporting,aphysicalenvironmentthatisbothuniqueandmemorable.Themostrecentcampusmasterplan,publishedin1999,wasproducedbyCesarPelli&Associatesandprovidedasoundfoundationfordevelopingasenseofcommunity.
In2004,theuniversity’s
Commissionof125releasedaseriesofrecommendationsforchartingtheinstitution’snext25years.Inrecommendationsfiveandsix,theCommissioncalledforanewuniversitymasterplantointegrateacademicplanningandstrategicgoalswithourfacilities,infrastructure,andfinancialresources.IwouldliketocommendtheleadershipofDr.
PatClubbandDeanFritzSteinerforco-chairingtheMasterPlanAdvisoryCommittee.Similarly,
Ipersonallyappreciatethetimededicatedtothiseffortbyeverymemberofthecommittee.Theirsensitivitytobalancingtheoperationalneedsofcampuswiththeacademicvisionofourdeanshashelpedtoachieveacohesivedirectionforgenerations.TheCommission’s
recommendationsareevenmorerelevanttodaythanin2004.Theuniversitycontinuestodemonstratethatweareefficientstewardsoffinancialresources,evenasthoseresourcesareconstrained,bothacrossourcollegesandacrossouroperations.Whileemphasizingacademicandresearchexcellence—wearedoingbetterwithless.Withthatthoughtinmind,weinitiatedthisnewmasterplantoidentifythestrongestreturn-on-investmentopportunitiesforfurtheringouracademicCampusplanningisdonewithalong-termview.
Itguidesday-to-daybusinessdecisionsandinvestments;itisconcernedwithcreatinglastingvalue.Inthisway,
campusplanningisamirrorofouracademicmissiontocreateworld-classlearningenvironmentsforourstudents,enableresearchthatbenefitstheworld,andprovidepublicservicetosociety.0

aUsTinMasTerPlanbaCKGroUnDTheUniversityhasalonghistoryofcampusplanning,accountingforitsdistinguishedarchitectureandmemorablepublicspaces.AsdiscussedindetailintheArchitecturalDesignGuidelines,therearemanyspacesontheUTcampusthatexpressdifferenterasanddifferentvisions.Fromtheurbancampus,well-definedmalls,andorderedoutdoorspacesimaginedbyCassGilbert(1909-1922),thenumerousnewbuildingsbuiltintheHerbertGreeneyears(1922-1930),thenewarchitecturalvocabularyandformalapproachestocampusdesignestablishedinthePaulCretyears(1930-1945),theintroductionofmodernistdesignoncampus(1945-1960),theexpansionofcampustotheeastandsouthandtosatellitesitesintheRansomandErwinyears(1960-1975),andtheslowingofthetimeofrapidgrowth(1975-1996),tothereframingofthedirectionofdevelopmentoncampusandthefocusonenhancingthesenseofcommunitybroughtbytheCesarPelliMasterPlan(1996-2012),theUTAustincampushasseenmanyapproachestomanaginggrowthandusingdesigntocreateauniquesenseofplace.ThelastmasterplanfortheUTAustincampuswascompletedin1996bythearchitecturalfirmCesarPelli&Associates,Inc.,inassociationwiththelandscapearchitectsBalmoriAssociates,Inc.Themasterplanestablishedacomprehensivevisionforthecampusfoundedonhistoricpatternsofdevelopmentandtheuniquequalitiesofthecampusenvironment.Itarticulatedsevencoreplanningprinciplestoguidefuturedevelopmentandproposedinfillanddesignstrategiesforseveralareasofthecampus.Thesestrategieswerecomplementedbydetailedarchitecturalandlandscapedesignguidelinesforthecampus.ManyoftheinfillbuildingopportunitiesidentifiedinthePelliplanhavebeenachieved,andthismasterpla
