No
disciplines
have
seized
on
professionalismwith
as
much
enthusiasm
as
the
humanities.You
can,Mr
Menand
points
out,

a
lawyer

a

in
four.But
the

it

thehumanities
is
nine
years.Not
surprisingly,
up
tohalf

all
doctoral

getting
their

His
concern
is
mainly
with
the
humanities:Literature,
languages,
philosophy
and
soon.Thesearedisciplines
that

22%

many leading

want
their

to

the
basic
canon
of
ideas
that
everyeducated should
possess.But
most
find
itdifficult
to
agree
on
what
a
“general
education”should
look
like.At
Harvard,
Mr
Menand
notes,
“thegreat
books
are read
because
they
have
beenread”—they
form
a
sort
of
social
glue.[C]
Equally
unsurprisingly,
only

are
simply

is
partlybecause
universities

fewer

English
departments
