You know that thrill(兴 奋 )you get when listening to your favorite music?That exciting feeling when you
15、hear your favorite songs?According to a recent study,it seems the same thing can happen while you are reading,but not with every kind of text. This opens up interesting questions around how music,reading and emotions are connected in the brain.The study“ We decided we would do a comparison between f
16、our or five different kinds of texts to see how the brain reacted,”explains Adam Zeman,a scientist. “ The participants (参 与 者 )lay in an MRI scanner reading the texts,and then we compared brain activity for those five texts.”The texts ranged (涉 及 )from deadly boring ones to highly exciting ones,incl
17、uding the Highway Code,parts from novels,and poems.So what happened in the participants brains while they were reading?Emotional reactionAs the researchers observed,participants found some texts more emotional than others. When reading these emotional texts,there was higher activity in brain areas r
18、elated to pleasure and rewardthe same areas related to the thrill we get when we listen to music. As Zeman says,“ it perfectly shows that the emotional reaction to literature(文 学 )and to music has quite a bit in common. So it doesnt seem to matter whether you are listening or reading if you get a th
19、rill. That was one quite strong finding.”Introspection(内 省 )There were more interesting findings. Reading poetry is often considered an activity that requires us to use the brain,but did the study find any truth of this?When the participants were reading poems,the team found there was more activity
20、in a particular group of brain areas called the Default Network. “ These areas seem to be related to things we do with our minds when we are resting,like thinking about whats happened to us recently,thinking about whats going to happen in the near future,about other people,and that network seems to
21、be more strongly related to poetry than with other texts,”explains Zeman. This connection between poetry and introspection could be the subject of further research.ConclusionsThe study shows that the different texts activate different areas of our brains when we read. Zeman says,“ the study did supp
22、ort what we thought:reaction to literature was going to be a bit like the one to music in terms of emotion. 25、attersIn recent years, some schools have begun to introduce meditation, or mindfulness training, into their classrooms. During mindfulness training, students may be asked to sit quietly and observe their own thoughts and feelings to avoid being controlled by them. Mindfulness training can help stude
26、nts overcome anxiety (焦虑), control their behavior, and improve their ability to pay attention in class. Students are expected to learn how to meditate in order to reduce stress and do better in their schoolwork.Among schools that already teach meditation, the results have been positive. In one study
27、, teachers reported that after five weeks of mindfulness practice, their students were more focused. They also participated more fully in class. A middle school in San Francisco reported that a student meditation program led to higher attendance rates and better grades. Another study suggested that
28、meditation helped students perform better on tests by improving their working memory and reducing their anxiety. Many supporters believe that meditation training programs can also help students overcome stress. For example, Headstand is a mindfulness education program designed to help students overc
29、ome anxiety. A study concluded that ninety-eight percent of participating students felt less stressed after they completed the Headstand program. In another study, researchers in New Haven, Connecticut, followed students who participated in meditation and yoga classes three times a week. They found
30、that after each class, participants had lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone (激素), in their bodies.Despite the positive results seen so far, critics also point out that much of the current research is not rigorous(严谨的) enough. Associate Professor Tamar Mendelson agrees that research on meditat
31、ion in children is still in its early stages. However, even she insists that she has seen the positive impact of meditation on children. Others express worries that meditation is not a valuable use of class time. But many disagree. Denise Pope, a professor from the Stanford University, says, “This i

You get a lot of bang for your buck and anyone who is against it isnt thinking clearly.” Indeed, additional studies will surely strengthen our understanding of the benefits of mindfulness.Although still in its early stages, research shows that meditation can
