SKOTHEORYSkois a Greek word for “pure”, and Skotheory is an approach to translation, which was developed by HanJ. Vermmer in Germanyhe late 1970s. According to Skothe

5、orie, “one form of behavior is nevertheless held to bemore appropriaten the other in order to attaheended goal or pure.”(Nord, 2001:27) The essence of thetheory ist it proes “the prime principle determining any translation pros is the pure of the overalltranslational action.”(Nord, 2001:27)Skotheory

6、 includes three principal rules: namely, the Skorule, the coherence rule (ratextual coherence) and theorie by Hans J. Vermeer, Nord summarized otherfidelity rule (ertextual coherence). 9、bout the film, such as type (detective story or Dracula movie), plot(about a, a thing or a disaster)etc. This information is definiy the skoof the audien. In order to satisfy therequirement, the translators must transfer this information as soon assible. To achieve this goal, translators alwaysadopt

10、 Literal Translation or Transliteration. This kind of translation can not only retahe structure of the original, but convey the content as much assible.Literal translation, the most common way of translation, refers to the linguistic structure of the source text isfollowed, but is normalized accordi

11、ng to the rules of thelanguage( David Crystal, 1997). This method proves tobe very simple, feasible and effective when the name reflects almost exactly the original content of the movie. Suchnames can be directly translatedo Chiwithout much speculation. Transliteration also belongs to this kind oftr

12、anslation. According to Oxford Advanced Learners English-ChiDictionary, “transliteration” means “to writewords or letters in or as the letters of a different alphabet.” (Extended Fourth Edition, 1997: 1621). As for the film, translators should give the appropriate translation according to the content of the film. Sometimes it needs creation and im

16、agination. Free translation often calls for sometechniques, such as omis, exten,les:converandlification in particulartomaketheChiverbeautiful. So, the commer l function of film title, in popular term, is to require high profit.For this sko , translators

Under the guidance of skotheory, in order to make the audienoflanguage enjoy the movie andachieve the loyalty a

24、nd fidelity to the original, translators must take cultureo consideration.For exle: The translation of a famous American movie “American Beauty”, was丽人or 大美人.In fact, it is not correct because American Beauty is a kind of red rosebush in America, blossoms out in four seasons. Such blossom is more li

25、ke a red rose in China, which symbolizes beauty, purity and love. So they are always renderedbetn lovers. Somebodyaiwan therefore modify the translationo 心玫瑰情, which is more correctand appropriate of Chiaudien.“Rat Race”is another exle. There is a funny translation 老鼠赛跑. So called “funny”,t is becau
