2、,nottoperpetuatethem.”Acenturylater,oureliteuniversitiesseemtobefightingthegoodfightthatDeweyenvisioned.Youcantgraduatefromafancyschoolthesedayswithoutlearningabouthumaninequalityandinjustice.Multiculturalandglobalcourserequirementsexposestudentstotheevilsofpoverty,environmentaldegradation,gendervio
3、lenceandsystematicracism.Campusorganizationsreinforcethesemessagesbystagingprotestsandcoordinatingvolunteereffortsforunderservedcommunities.Butwhencollegecomestoanend,ourstudentsselltheirsoulstoinvestmentbanksandconsultingfirms.WevecreatedagenerationofyoungpeoplewhotalkthetalkofMarxandFoucault,thenw
4、alkthewalkofmanagementandfinance.Ina2014,nearlyathirdofgraduatingseniorsatHarvardUniversitytookjobsatconsultingcompanieslikeMcKinseyorinWallStreetfirmslikeGoldmanSachs.Evenmoreremarkably,nearlythree-quartersofHarvardseniorssubmitresumestofinanceandconsultingemployers.Andatmyowninstitution,theUnivers
5、ityofPennsylvania,43percentof2016graduatestookajobinoneofthosetwoindustries.ThatwouldbeOK,iftheyactuallywantedtoworkforMcKinsey,Goldmanandfriends.Butoftentheydont,andtheydoitanyway.Thatsthedepressingtakeawayofa2014studybyUCSanDiegosociologistAmyBinderandtwoofhergraduatestudents,whointerviewed60under
6、graduatesandrecentalumniatHarvardandStanforduniversities.Mostofthesepeopledidntcometocollegeimaginingcareersinfinanceorconsulting.Nordidtheytypicallyexudeexcitementabouttheprospectsofworkingthere.Instead,theysawthischoiceasthesafestone.Thefinanceandconsultingfirmshaveahugefootprintatoureliteschools,
7、especiallyatjobfairsandcareer-servicesoffices.Thefirmsareverycompetitive,obviously,andtheypayextremelywell.Everyoneelseseemstobeapplyingtothem.Andifyoudont,well,youmightforsakesomethingbig.ThatswhatMillennialscallFOMO,FearofMissingOut.Youseeyourpeerswearingsnazzyclothes,gettingwinedanddined,andevent
8、uallylandingahigh-salariedjob.Likemostyoungpeople,yourenotsurewhatyouwanttodo.Sowhynotdothis,atleastforalittlewhile?Icanthinkofmanygoodanswers.Youmightnotenjoythesejobs,whichoftenrequirelonghoursbutlittleintellectualchallenge.Youwroteaseniorthesisdecryinginequality,butyoureenteringindustriesthatfreq
9、uentlywidenit.Youllbecomeamoreinterestingpersonifyougoagainstthegrain.Andsoon.Butourstudentsdonthearthesechallengesnearlyenough.Manyofourcareer-servicesoperationshaveessentiallybecomearmsofthefinanceandconsultingfirms,whichpaybigbuckstogetthebesttablesatjobfairsandtheclearestaccesstoseniorsin-boxes.
10、Everythingthestudentsseeechoesthesamebasictheme:Fortheyoungwhippersnapperonthemake,itsbanking(orconsulting)orbust.Whataboutintheirclassrooms?Mostelite-collegefacultyleanleft,ofcourse,sotheyrenothappytoseetheirstudentswritepapersdecryingglobalinjusticeandthentrundleofftofinanceandconsultinggigs.Butmo
11、stofusdontmakeabigfussoverit;instead,wesighandlookaway.Thestudentssenseourdispleasure,ofcourse.WhenoneofBindersHarvardintervieweestoldafavoredprofessorthathehadtakenajobatMcKinsey,theprofessorsbodylanguagesuddenlychanged.“Hewassortoflike,Oh,theregoesanotherone,”thestudentreported.Nothingmorewassaid.
12、Itslikeanawkwardjuniorhigh-schooldance,whereneitherpartnerlikesthebandbuttheycantadmitit.Itstimetostopthedance,andalsothepretense.Weregrown-ups,andsoareourstudents.Soweoweittothemandtoourselvestopressthemontheirdecisions.Whenastudenttellsmesheisapplyingforaconsultingorfinancejob,Ialwaysaskwhy.Ifshes
13、excitedabouttheposition,andifshebelievesitwillhelpherflourishandgrow,Icongratulateheronherchoiceandwishherallthebest.ButifsheisntpsychedforitandmanystudentsarentIdontgosilent.Gently,butpointedly,Iaskthemwhattheyreallywanttodowiththeirlives.Thencomestheconfession,andoftenthetears.Theywanttowritebooks
14、,ormakemovies;theywanttoteachartormusic;theywanttojointhePeaceCorpsortheStateDepartment.Buttheycant,orsotheysay.Theyneedthemoneyandsecurityofahigh-payingjob,andtheywanttheprestigeandstatusofafancytitle.Andwitheveryoneelsegoingforthesameprize,itsjusttooscarytostrikeoutonyourown.Iremindthemthateveryfigureweadmireinhumanhistorydidexactlythat.Itellthemthattheyarestudentsatoneoftheworldsgreatestuniversities,sotheyhavemorechoicesthanalmostanybodyelseontheplanet.AndthenItellthemthatlifeisjusttoodamnedshorttodojobsthatre
