Stream-of-Consciousness Technique:“It is a narrative mode that seeks to portray an individuals point of view by giving the written equivalent of the characters thought processes, either in a loose interior monologue, or in conn

9、ection to his or her actions.”“Stream-of-consciousness writing is usually regarded as a special form of interior monologue and is characterized by associative leaps in syntax and punctuation that can make the prose difficult to follow.”“In stream of consciousness, the speakers thought processes are

The book contains a number of pages without punctuation to show the stream of consciousness that goes with the words.Virginia Woolfs Mrs. Dalloway:It details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway in post-World War I England. The story is about Clariss

16、as preparations for a party of which she is to be hostess. It travels forwards and back in time and in and out of the characters minds to construct an image of Clarissas life and of the inter-war social structure. Woolf blurs the distinction between direct and indirect speech throughout the novel.
