Even as urban centres revive , more America ns move from city centre to suburb tha n go theother way.But the West has also made mistakes , from which the rest o

Suburba nites tend to use more roads and con sume more carb on tha n urbanites (though perhaps not as much as dista nt commuters forced out by gree n belts). Acquire strips of land for roads and railways, and chunks forparks, before the city sprawls into them. New Yorks 19th -century governors decided where Central Park was goingto go long before
55、the city reached it. New York went on to develop in a way that they could not have imagined, but thepark is still there. This is not the dirigisme of the new -town planner -that confident soul who believes he knows wherepeople will want to live and work , and how they will get from one to the other.
