2、avetakenplaceintheworldwiththehelpofscience.Inthepast,lifewasnasty,brutishandshort.Itishardtoimaginehowourforefatherscoulddowithoutsomanyconveniencesthatmodernsciencebringsabout.Backthen,onlyasmallgroupofpeopleenjoyedtheveryfewcomforts.Butthemajorityofpeopledidntevenhavesufficientfood,letalongtheirp

3、rivilegetobeeducated.Anyway,itissciencethatchangestheworldandmakespeopleslifebetterandbetter,althoughitalsoleadstosomebadaspectsatthesametime.Fromthediscoveryofthegravitytothefirststeponthemoon,wehumanbeingshaveexperiencedalongprocessofdevelopingscience.Andnow,thisprocessisstillcontinuingmuchfaster.

4、Neworganismsarealreadybeingengineered,andnewgeneticallymodifiedcropspromisebenefitsfromhigheryieldsandlessuseofharmfulchemicalsandsoon.Alotofexamplesareshowingthispoint.Inthefuture,changesarelikelytobeevenmuchgreaterassciencereachesouttoshapelifeitself.Maybeoneday,thepossibilitythatlifeexistedonMars

5、billionsofyearsagowillbepotentiallyoneofthegreatestdiscoveriesofourtime.Itistheforceofthecompetition,wehumanbeingsinquiringmindandinitiativethatbringaboutthenonstoppeddevelopmentofscience.Therefore,itisdifficultandimpossibletopreventsciencefromchangingtheworldandourlifeaswell.Atpresent,weareintwomin

6、dsaboutscience.Ontheonehand,weareenjoyingthesweetlifeasaresultoftheevelopmentofscience,andexpectittocontinue.Andweareshowingourinterestsintosomescientificexpeditions,suchastheastronomy,thealiencivilization,etc.Ontheotherhand,wearedistrustfulofit,duetothelackofunderstandingofscience.Somepeoplethusfar

7、arestillverysuperstitious,andtheywouldevenbelieveinsuperstitionsratherthanbelieveinscience.StephenHawking,oneofthemostremarkablescientistsintheworld,oncesaid,“Inademocraticsociety,thepublicneedstohaveabasicunderstandingofthescience,sothatitcanmakeinformeddecisionsandnotleavetheminthehandsofexperts.”

8、ThishasremindedmeofProfessorAlanG.MacDiarmidfromAmerica,thepersonwhogottheNobelPrizeforchemistryintheyearofXX.InhislectureatPekingUniversitythisyear,heputforwardthatscienceispeople.Healsoexpoundedtheimportanceofthebasicscienceforthepublic.Evidently,everyoneofusdoesneedscience,orwecantlivewithoutit.N

9、owthateveryoneneedsscience,whynottakeadvantageofsomemeanstogivethepublictherightbasicscientificknowledge?Sowhentheyfacetheproblemssuchasacidrain,thegreenhouseeffect,nuclearweapons,environmentdestructionandsomeotherproblems,theycanalsomakeinformeddecisionsonthesesubjects,justaswhatHawkingsaid.Oneaspe

10、ctreliesonwhatistaughtinschools.Butscienceisoftentaughtinanuninterestingwayandmoststudentsjustlearnitbyrotetopassexaminations.However,thefinalgoaloflearningscienceisnottopassexaminationsortogetahigherscore;instead,weshouldtrytomakefulluseofittochangeourworldandlife.Whilelearning,weshouldtrytoaskmore

11、questionsandweshouldhavethecourageofsuspectingtheknowledgeinthebooks,assomeofthescientificconclusionsarelikelytobecorrectedinthefuture.Whoknows.Sonotonlymustwechangeourattitudetowardsscience,butalsothewayofteachingandlearningscience.Inaddition,scienceisalwayschangingatafastrate,andwhowelearnatschool

12、isntthatsufficienttolastalifetime.SothemassmediaincludingTV,radio,newspaper,magazineandpublishingcompanywillplayanimportantroleinreportingthelatestscienceintime.Moreover,themassmediacanalsopopularizebasicsciencetothepublic,becauseonlyinthiswaywillmorepeoplerealizewhatonearthscienceis.“Scientistsandengineerstendtoexpresstheirideasintheformofequationsbecausetheyneedtoknowtheprecisevaluesofquantities.Butfortherestofus,aqualitativegraspofscientificconceptsissufficient,a
