But problems still remain in academic papers.Academic pap

2、ers attract more attention from the aspect of linguistic analysis.Certain formats or principles should be followed while Chinese researchers formulate their papers or thesis.3Introduction To define Reporting: the attribution of propositional content to a source outside the writer of the article in t

3、he current situation, and the marking of this by the presence of any of a number of signals of attribution (Thomas and Hawes 1994:129).Three ways to report classified by Thompson (1994): quotation or direct speech, which means repeating others original words; reported speech or indirect speech, whic

4、h refers to report others words indirectly; and language reports, which means to report the source of speech.4The term Reporting Verb (RV) refers to the verbs used in citations. (Thompson 1991,12(4),p365.) Classification of RVs: Denotation Evaluation Authors such as Swales (1987) and Davies (1988b)

5、have shown how these insight s can be incorporated into EAP teaching materials. (Denotation) Mulkay (1991) has argued that an academic text must satisfy two basic premises (Evaluation)5Literature ReviewMany studies have investigated EFL learners and NSs difficulties with thesis/dissertation writing

6、(Paltridge1997 a, 1997 b, 2002; Braine 1989; Canseco & Byrd 1989; Casanave 1992; Casanave &Hubbard 1992; Cadman 1997; West & Byrd 1982), in terms of their contextual, rhetorical, and linguistic elements. Thesis evaluation also attracts attention, studies of which include topic selection,

7、 structure, the format decision, punctuation and appropriate use of phrases and grammar.(Wang & Wang 1998; Shaw 1991) Studies are also carried out on the genre of thesis (Sunny & Rong 2004), or genre, frames and writing in research settings (Brian 1997:192). There has been analysis on some s

8、ections, such as acknowledgement (Hyland 2004 ), referencing (Liu & Wu 1998), introduction (Guo 2001,Hu 2005) and discussion (Hopkins & Dudley-Evans 1988) and literature review (Shaw 1991).6On reporting verbs, Chen Ming (2002. M.A.) investigated the reporting verbs in News corpora.On reporti

9、ng , Maggie Charles (2006)investigates the construction of stance in reporting clauses by choosing academic papers from contrasting disciplines: a social science-politics and a natural science-materials science. Jiang Yuechun (2005. M.A.) conducts a contrastive analysis on reporting and compares the

10、 different patterns in reporting in postgraduates theses by Chinese Learners of English and Native speakers of English.Little attention is paid to the semantic prosody of reporting verbs in academic papers ,especially to the exact implications caused by RVs in certain context. 7Research Questions Wh

11、at features are there in thesis in terms of reporting verbs and are there any differences in academic papers by Chinese and NS? 2) What features do RVs have in term of denotation and evaluation? 3) What semantic prosodic features do RVs have while they are used in certain context? Is there any relat
