The Allies had been tld that sme f the mightiest f these guns were h

2、ere, and they wuld be trained n the beaches t stp the Allied advance.The Rangers lked up and saw the enemy sldiers at the edge f the cliffs, shting dwn at them with machine guns and thrwing grenades. And the American Rangers began t climb. They sht rpe ladders ver the face f these cliffs and began t

3、 pull themselves up. When ne Ranger fell, anther wuld take his place. When ne rpe was cut, a Ranger wuld grab anther and begin his climb again. They climbed, sht back, and held their fting. Sn, ne by ne, the Rangers pulled themselves ver the tp, and in seizing the firm land at the tp f these cliffs,

4、 they began t seize back the cntinent f Eurpe. Tw hundred and twenty-five came here. After tw days f fighting, nly ninety culd still bear arms.Behind me is a memrial that symblizes the Ranger daggers that were thrust int the tp f these cliffs. And befre me are the men wh put them here. These are the

5、 bys f Pinte du Hc. These are the men wh tk the cliffs. These are the champins wh helped free a cntinent. These are the heres wh helped end a war. Gentlemen, I lk at yu and I think f the wrds f Stephen Spenders pem. Yu are men wh in yur lives fught fr life and left the vivid air signed with yur hnr.

6、I think I knw what yu may be thinking right nw - thinking we were just part f a bigger effrt; everyne was brave that day. Well, everyne was. Yu remember the stry f Bill Millin f the 51st Highlanders? Frty years ag tday, British trps were pinned dwn near a bridge, waiting desperately fr help. Suddenl

7、y, they heard the sund f bagpipes, and sme thught they were dreaming. Well, they werent. They lked up and saw Bill Millin with his bagpipes, leading the reinfrcements and ignring the smack f the bullets int the grund arund him.Lrd Lvat was with him - Lrd Lvat f Sctland, wh calmly annunced when he gt

8、 t the bridge, Srry, Im a few minutes late, as if hed been delayed by a traffic jam, when in truth hed just cme frm the bldy fighting n Swrd Beach, which he and his men had just taken.There was the impssible valr f the Ples, wh threw themselves between the enemy and the rest f Eurpe as the invasin t

9、k hld; and the unsurpassed curage f the Canadians wh had already seen the hrrrs f war n this cast. They knew what awaited them there, but they wuld nt be deterred. And nce they hit Jun Beach, they never lked back.All f these men were part f a rll call f hnr with names that spke f a pride as bright a

10、s the clrs they bre; The Ryal Winnipeg Rifles, Plands 24th Lancers, the Ryal Scts Fusiliers, the Screaming Eagles, the Yemen f Englands armred divisins, the frces f Free France, the Cast Guards Matchb Fleet, and yu, the American Rangers.Frty summers have passed since the battle that yu fught here. Y

11、u were yung the day yu tk these cliffs; sme f yu were hardly mre than bys, with the deepest jys f life befre yu. Yet, yu risked everything here. Why? Why did yu d it? What impelled yu t put aside the instinct fr self-preservatin and risk yur lives t take these cliffs? What inspired all the men f the

12、 armies that met here? We lk at yu, and smehw we knw the answer. It was faith and belief. It was lyalty and lve.The men f Nrmandy had faith that what they were ding was right, faith that they fught fr all humanity, faith that a just Gd wuld grant them mercy n this beachhead, r n the net. It was the

13、deep knwledge - and pray Gd we have nt lst it - that there is a prfund mral difference between the use f frce fr liberatin and the use f frce fr cnquest. Yu were here t liberate, nt t cnquer, and s yu and thse thers did nt dubt yur cause. And yu were right nt t dubt.Yu all knew that sme things are w

14、rth dying fr. nes cuntry is wrth dying fr, and demcracy is wrth dying fr, because its the mst deeply hnrable frm f gvernment ever devised by man. All f yu lved liberty. All f yu were willing t fight tyranny, and yu knew the peple f yur cuntries were behind yu.The Americans wh fught here that mrning

15、knew wrd f the invasin was spreading thrugh the darkness back hme. They fught - r felt in their hearts, thugh they culdnt knw in fact, that in Gergia they were filling the churches at 4:00 am. In Kansas they were kneeling n their prches and praying, and in Philadelphia they were ringing the Liberty

16、Bell.Smething else helped the men f D-day; their rck-hard belief that Prvidence wuld have a great hand in the events that wuld unfld here; that Gd was an ally in this great cause. And s, the night befre the invasin, when Clnel Wlvertn asked his parachute trps t kneel with him in prayer, he tld them:

18、shaped the unity f the Allies.When the war was ver, there were lives t be rebuilt and gvernments t be returned t the peple. There were natins t be rebrn. Abve all, there was a new peace t be assured. These were huge and daunting tasks. But the Allies summned strength frm the faith, belief, lyalty, a

19、nd lve f thse wh fell here. They rebuilt a new Eurpe tgether. There was first a great recnciliatin amng thse wh had been enemies, all f whm had suffered s greatly. The United States did its part, creating the Marshall Plan t help rebuild ur allies and ur frmer enemies. The Marshall Plan led t the At

20、lantic alliance - a great alliance that serves t this day as ur shield fr freedm, fr prsperity, and fr peace.In spite f ur great effrts and successes, nt all that fllwed the end f the war was happy r planned. Sme liberated cuntries were lst. The great sadness f this lss eches dwn t ur wn time in the

21、 streets f Warsaw, Prague, and East Berlin. The Sviet trps that came t the center f this cntinent did nt leave when peace came. Theyre still there, uninvited, unwanted, unyielding, almst frty years after the war. Because f this, allied frces still stand n this cntinent. Tday, as frty years ag, ur ar

22、mies are here fr nly ne purpse: t prtect and defend demcracy. The nly territries we hld are memrials like this ne and graveyards where ur heres rest.We in America have learned bitter lessns frm tw wrld wars. It is better t be here ready t prtect the peace, than t take blind shelter acrss the sea, ru

23、shing t respnd nly after freedm is lst. Weve learned that islatinism never was and never will be an acceptable respnse t tyrannical gvernments with an epansinist intent. But we try always t be prepared fr peace, prepared t deter aggressin, prepared t negtiate the reductin f arms, and yes, prepared t

24、 reach ut again in the spirit f recnciliatin. In truth, there is n recnciliatin we wre than a recnciliatin with the Sviet Unin, s, tgether, we can lessen the risks f war, nw and frever.Its fitting t remember here the great lsses als suffered by the Russian peple during Wrld War II: 20 millin perishe

We want t wipe frm the face f the earth the terrible weapns that man nw has in his hands. And I tell yu, we are ready t seize that beachhead. We lk fr sme
