7、s Michael a document.)LAWYER: Ah, Michael, if I could just get you to sign this here which gives you the contents from the safe deposit box.(Michael does.)Fine. And this one please, which clears the bank of all further responsibility for the contentsSafe deposit box?Im going to deposit the 2000 doll

8、ars in the Bank of ChinaWithdraw withdrawalPlease make out a withdrawal slip beforehand.BETTY: This is kind of exciting. Maybe well find out your mother had secret millions lying around?Kind of :Where can we find a restaurant? Im kind of hungry(Caroline smiles weakly .Michael hands back the papers.)

Now your mother is interred at Seer Heights Funeral Home until arrangements can be made.InterAfter interring his murdered beloved, he went on the way of revenge.The top task of the earthquake aftermath is to search for and rescue those who are buried under the

14、 be delirious with joy2. the hell What the hell are you going to do?LAWYER: Well, she was very specific. She wanted her ashes to be thrown over Rosmand  Bridge.MICHAEL: What!BETTY: Bizarre!CAROLINE: Mr. Peterson, are you sure Mama wrote all this?LAWYER: Well, it was notarized and witnessed

Im not even sure its Christian.BETTY: Maybe its an Italian thing.(to the lawyer) Their mother was Italian.MICHAEL: Doesnt matter. Move on.(The woman dare not obj

18、ect. The Lawyer raises his eyebrows and continues.)LAWYER: Well, we can come back to this ,Why dont we open the box?(A: key is  inserted into the lock of the safe deposit box and the lid is opened. There are some papers, deeds, et. Michael!  Begins sorting through these. Caroline notices a

19、 manila envelope addressed to her mother, postmarked 1965. She opens it up to find two letters and a few photographs-Francesca standing near a covered bridge, her hair wind  blown, her expression serene, beautiful and sad. )CAROLINE: Michael, look at these-Ive never seen these pictures of mama.

20、 Have you?(Betty and Michael look over her shoulder. He shakes “no”)CAROLINE(continued) It was in this envelope from 1965.BETTY: Shes not wearing a bra.(takes the bridge photo Well, thats the Holywell Bridge. In case anybodys interested.)(Michael returns to the other papers. Betty takes the photogra

21、ph for further examination. Caroline opens one of the letters and begins to read.)MICHAEL: (to Lawyer) Why are there two deeds here?LAWYER: Ill see them .This is for the additional acres he purchased in 1959.MICHAEL: And this?LAWYER: Those are bills of sale from the equipment your mother sold in(Thr

22、oughout their conversation, Caroline reads the letter and her expression sinks into one of shock and con-fusion .She flips to the last page of the letter to read who it is from. She cant believe her eyes.)sinkHer heart sank within her as she knew she couldnt pass the exam.LAWYER: Oh, this one is for

23、 the original parcel your father purchased. AndCAROLINE: Michael.MICHAEL: (reading documents)Yeah.CAROLINE: Michael!MICHAELL(irritated) Why?CAROLINE: Could you come her for a minute, please?MICHAEL: Why? Where are we going?(They exit, leaving Betty and the Lawyer in the living room.)BETTY: Did she s

24、ay anything in there about me, about leaving me anything in particular?In particular:The man bought many presents for his family and a lovely rose for his wife in particular.LAWYER: No.(Michael and Caroline reenter the living room. Michaels expression now matches CAROLINE in disbelief.)1. match

26、ep you two waiting around.(to the Lawyer) Ill contact your office about the legal work.We were just wondering how it might be better ifI was just wondering how it might be better if I went there first and then you would go the other day.(Inside the KITCHEN LATER,CAROLINE is reading the letter to Mic

27、hael.)CAROLINE: “I struggle to put it together in a way that allows me to continue knowing were on separate road. But then I look through the lens of my camera, and youre there. I start to write an article and I find my-self writing it to you. Its clear to me that now we have been moving towards eac

28、h other, towards those four days , all our lives.SeparateShe and her sisters have separate rooms in the hotel.MICHAEL: (rises and interrupts)I dont want to hear anymore! Burn the damn thing! I dont want to hear it! Throw it away!(CAROLINE continues reading silently. Michaels curiosity gets the bette

29、r of him.)get the better of The young man got the better of other players and won the table tennis match.MICHAEL: Whats he saying now?CAROLINE: Well, he just goes on about how if mama ever needed him, she could reach him through the National Geographic magazine in Washington D.C. He was a photograph

30、er. He promises not to write again. And then all it says is I love you Robert.The National Geographic magazine:Washington D.C. Washington District of Columbus.MICHAEL: Robert! Jesus! Ill kill himCAROLINE: That would be some trick. Hes already dead. Thats what this other letter is.(takes the letter a

31、nd skims From his attorney. He left most of his things to mama and requested)MICHAEL: What?CAROLINE: That he be cremated and his ashes thrown on Rosmand Bridge.MICHAEL: DAMN HIM! I knew mama wouldnt have thought of that herself. It was some damn pervertedphotographic mind influencing her! When did t

32、he bastard die?CAROLINE:82MICHAEL: Wait a minute! That was three years after daddy. Do you think?CAROLINE: I dont know. Im completely in the dark here. Thats what I get for moving away.In the dark They made the plan secretly and put everyone else in the dark.MICHAEL: We were kids when this happened.

33、 II cant believe it .(then , innocently )Do you think she had sex with him?Have sex with somebody;make love with somebody(CAROLINE cannot believe he is this dense)CAROLINE:(sarcastic)My Lord. Dont say that!MICHAEL: Well, what am I supposed to think?CAROLINE: I cant believe she never told me? We spoke at least once a week. How could she do that?MICHAEL: How did she meet him? Did Dad know? 35、s there anything else in that envelope?CAROLINE: No, I dont think so. I(She dumps it over and a small key falls out. Pause, as Caroline and Michael look to each other-they grab the key and run out of the kitchen. At the foot of their parents bed sits an walnut hope chest. They tries the key. It fits

They open the chest to find: Camera equipment, a chain with a medallion that reads “FRANCESCA,” three leather bound notebooks and a sealed envelope with “Caroline or Michael” written on it.)CAROLINE/ MICHAEL: (at the same time) You read it!(Caroline relents She takes out the letter and reads.)CAR

37、OLINE: “January, 1987.Dear Caroline. I hope youre reading this with Michael. Im sure he wouldnt be able to read it by himself and hell need some help understanding all this.”(Insulted ,Michael pulls the letter out of her hand and defiantly attempts to read it aloud himself to disprove his mothers cl

38、aim. But after looking at a few lines, he surrenders and hands the letter back to his sister.)CAROLINE:(coutd) “First , and most of all, I love you both very much and although I feel fine, I thought it was time to put my affairs, excuse that word, in order.”MICHAEL: I cant believe; shes making jokes

39、.CAROLINE:“After going through the safety deposit box, I m sure youll find youre way to this letter. Its hard to write this to my own children. I could let this die with the rest of me, I suppose. But as one gets older, ones fears subside. What becomes more and more important is to be known-know for

40、 all that you were during this brief stay. How sad it seems to me to leave this earth without those you love the most ever really knowing who you were. Its easy for a mother to love her children no matter what-its something that just happens. I dont know if its as simple for children. Youre all so b

41、usy being angry at us for raising you wrong. His name was Robert Kincaid. He was a photographer and he was here in 1965 shooting an article for National Geographic on the covered bridges of Madison County. Remember when we got that issue how we felt like celebrities? Remember when we started getting

42、 the subscription?”How we felt like celebrities:(Caroline begins to search for the mentioned National Geographic.  The cover of one of them is just Rosmand Bridge.)CAROLINE: Oh, thats Rosmand Bridge. (She opens the magazine and finds Roberts  photo on the first page.) That must be Robert K

43、incaid. (points to his chest in the photo ) And thats Mums medallion (continues to read the letter) “I dont want you to be angry with him . I hope after you know the whole story, you might even think well of him. Even grateful.”MICHAEL: Grateful?Think well of :People will not think well of the stran

44、ge young man until they know him.CAROLINE:(reads) “Its all there in the three notebooks. ”(pick up the notebooks)(In the kitchen later, Caroline opens the first notebook which is dated AUUST 1965. Michael sits beside her with a cup of coffee.)CAROLINE: (reads) “It was the week of the Illinois state

45、Fair.” The two of you were going with Dad to exhibit Carolines prize steer. It was the Sunday night you left.(turns to Francescas  voice)I know it sounds awful but I couldnt wait for you all to leave. Youre going to be gone until Friday. Four days, just four days”1. Prize steer:2. I c

46、ouldnt wait for you all to leave.The students cant wait for the long summer vacation.(DISSOLVE TO: 1965, in Johnsons kitchen that night.)Francesca is busy preparing dinner as enjoying a beautiful classical opera from the radio.Francesca: Michael! Caroline! Richard! Dinner!(Michael enters through a s

47、creen door from the back, letting the DOOR SLAM SHUT.)FRANCESCA: Michael, what did I tell you about that door, uh?Michael: Sorry(Richard, Francescas husband, enters after Michael, letting the door SLAM the same way. Francesca is about to say something, but gives up .Then comes Caroline. The daughter

48、, who seems to dislike operas, goes ahead and, without a word, tunes in some pop songs. Francesca still tries to keep silence. They take their seats.)Francesca: Ok, so, would you like to say grace?CAROLINE :( emotionlessly) Grace!(Everyone begins in complete silence. When Richard scans the table for

49、 something that obviously isnt there, Francesca is up out of her seat before he can ask, at the fridge, grabbing the sour cream, closing the fridge and back at the table with incredible swiftness. No one makes any comment on her considerate service or even looks up with a warm smile, as if all shoul

50、d be taken for granted. Francesca looks at them quietly.)sour cream:take something for granted;we all take it for granted that children should look after their parents when they are old.(Later in Richard and Francescas bedroom, Richard tries to pull out one of the drawers of the wardrobe but in vain

51、.)Richard: Damn the drawer!Francesca: (pulls out the drawer successfully) You cant get mad at it.Richard: Sorry, I didnt mean the yell.Francesca: I want you to stay away from anything too spicyRichard: Uhuh.Francesca: Then you promise me.Richard: (a little impatient) I swear. Only filters and no mor

52、e than half pack a day, in half an hour.Francesca: Because you know half pack to save, you will be better off.Richard: I know, I know, I m only kidding. Surely you dont want to come?Francesca: Im positive.Richard: what are you going to do for four days as a womans leisure?Francesca: Something I usua

53、lly do except with less help.Richard: I really cant sleep, you know, I cant sleep next to you anymore.Francesca: So its only four days.(They kiss goodbye. The familys truck disappears on the horizon and Francesca is left alone. That night, she sits in the dark with a classical opera in air when her

54、pet dog hopping into her arms.)Francesca: (talks to the dog, the only companion at present ) Oh, God, where have you been? You missed them, you know, they already left. My, you love me so much. Francesca watches with suspicious curiosity as the truck stops and ROB-ERT KINCAID steps out.)ROBERT: Hi, you know I get the distinct feeling that

Got one of those covered bridges out here in this neighborhood?FRANCESCA: Rosmand Bridge?ROBERT: Thats itFRANCESCA: Well, youre pretty close. Its only about two m

57、iles from here.ROBERT: Which way?Francesca: Well, you go that way and come to the Carters and turn left.Robert: To Carters?Francesca: Carters farm, small house close to the road, big mean yellow dog.Robert: Mean yellow dog, ok?Francesca: Yeah, then you go along that road until you come to a fork and

58、 its only less than half a mile.Robert: And then where after the fork?Francesca: The right, and then you No, no, not that fork, excuse me. You pass Petersons.Robert: Petersons?Francesca: Petersons farm and past the told school house you turn left. It would be easier to tell you if the roads were marked.Robert: Yes, it certainly would.Francesca: Well, I can take you if you want. Or I can tell you. I can take you or tell you. Either way, its up to you. I dont care.Its up to somebody to do something;Its up to my parents to decide whether I should go to the party.Robert: I wouldnt want to ta
