12、to start our discussion of poetry in Western Europe with the Iliad and the Odyssey. These two great poems stand out as great examples of the earliest European poems. They are believed to have been written in some time between 800BC and 700BC, partly because the poems refer to the social conditions o

Well, tradition ascribes them to a man named Homer, but we know virtually nothing about this Homer. In fact, some say that such a poet
14、never existed at all, that neither the Iliad nor the Odyssey was written by a single poet, but rather each poem is composed of the writings of several people. This anyway is the view of a school of literary critics in the 18th century known as the Analysts. The Analysts points to internal evidence s
15、uch as variations in the literary devices used in the poem to argue that each work was in fact a collection of several poems by several Greek authors. Opposing the analysts were a second group of scholars called the Unitarian. They insisted that the Iliad and the Odyssey could have been the work of
16、a single poetic genius. To support their argument, they stress among other things the consistency of the character portrayed in the poetry. This wouldnt have been possible, they said, if they were written by many different poets. Now how we look at the Homeric question today has been greatly influen
17、ced by someone named Milman Parry, an American scholar who first presented his ideas about Homer in the 1930s. From then on, Marie devoted herself to completing the work that they had begun together. Marie and Pierre Curi
24、e were awarded a joint Nobel Prize in 1904, followed up by a second one for Marie in 1911. Their research was crucial in the development of x-rays in surgery. During World War I Marie Curie helped to equip ambulances, which she drove to the front lines, with x-ray equipment. The International Red Cr
25、oss made her head of its Radiological Service and she held training courses for medical orderlies and doctors in the new techniques. Despite her success, Marie faced great opposition from male scientists in France and she never received the recognition she deserved. She died in 1934 from leukaemia,
26、due to exposure to high- energy radiation used in her research. Radiation has since been used to treat cancer worldwide. 2. Louis Pasteur was a French chemist
31、who in 1867 was able to demonstrate for the first time that germs caused disease. Pasteur went on to develop vaccines for chicken cholera, anthrax and rabies. The new science of bacteriology was advanced further by a German scientist, Robert Koch. Using microscopes and innovative methods of staining
32、 germs, Koch was able to identify specific germs as being responsible for the cause of disease. In 1882-3, he identified the microbes responsible for tuberculosis (TB) and cholera. A rivalry developed between Pasteur and Koch, based in part on the tension which existed following Frances defeat in th
33、e Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1. Both scientists were recognized in their own countries for their work, and set up with research centers. In 1881, Pasteur, successfully tried vaccine which protected against anthrax in animals. Koch, who quickly heard of the breakthrough by telegram, attempted unsucc
34、essfully to discredit Pasteur. When, in the following year, he had the opportunity to treat a boy with rabies called Joseph Meister, Pasteur succeeded in developing a rabies vaccine. 5. If animals such as bears and foxes lived here then why not people? Fossilized human rema
41、ins have been found on Alaskas Prince of Wales Island and much further south on the Channel Islands off California. These are thought to be as old as some of the Clovis .finds and it may only be a matter of time before older remains are discovered. If people did travel down the coasts between island
