1、生活中的挣扎1.IntroductionNowadays, Desperate Housewives has become one of the most popular American TV serials amongthe female audience in China and even around the world since it began to be put on the screen in October ,2004.The humorous language and exaggerated performance of the actors have shown Ame

2、rican family life incisively and vividly.Meanwhile, since theEnlightenment in 18th century when someissues about women were firstly put forward ,feminism has become the hotspot at present.Feminist theories are also applied widely in the literature analysis ,cultural and historical studies ,etc.2.A b

3、rief introduction of feminismIn Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, it gave thedefinition of feminism as followed :the belief and aim that womenshould have the samerights and opportunities as men; the struggle to achieve this aim.In Bible ?Genesis ,people regarded women as the villain of the piece

4、for their ancestor ,Eve,ate the forbidden fruit.Throughout the ages , in many mens eyes , women are inferior ,and must submit to men.Generally ,feminism ,also known as womensrights ,wasa concept originated from Europein 18th century.However ,different people from different era had various understand

5、ings of feminism.It was hard to judge what kinds of activities belong to feminist movements.Primarily, itmeans the completed rights for all women as human beings.3.A Feminism analysis of Desperate Housewives3.1 Analysis of Bree Van de KampIn Desperate Housewives , Bree was the model of perfect house

6、wife because she wanted to make everything perfect.Whether the household items,cooking ,appearanceor taking care of family members,she would spare noefforts.Nevertheless,her husband and children took all ofher work for granted.They even blamed her for pursuing perfect , just as a robot.Bree and her

7、husband were classmates when they were in the university.Once they had sworn to love and cherish each other for ever.But the passion had faded way with time passing through their fingers.Her husbands prostitution nearly broke her down as she had such a strong self-respect.However,in her inner world

8、,she was also eager for love and passion.As a human being , she still had the sense of sorrow and upset.When she could not talk to the otherhousewives , she was quite fragile although with a strong appearance.Due to the desperation , she nearly committed suicide just like Mary Alice Yang.In order to

9、 ease others worry ,she tried her best to maintain her perfect-lady image and could not exude her true self.Bree, a housewifewith the old value, dedicated to be a good traditionalfemale.But when she had the idea to write her own recipe,her passion was put aside by her husbands sneer.When her second

10、husband was arrested ,her friend ,Katherine Mayfair , helped her get rid of the grief and reset goals of her life.She became a successful businesswoman who offered arrangements of holding banquets.She also achieved her dream to publish a recipe,which became a best seller.3.2 Analysis of Lynette Scav

11、oBefore getting married , Lynette was an accomplished businesswoman who was much more capable than her husband.She topped the work on her list, supervising 65people with her ownwit and mean.But after marriage ,because of taking care of her children , she had to quit her job.She had three sons and on

12、e daughter; all of them were quitenaughty ,which always madeher desperate.When she had these children ,her only job was busy with them for twenty-four hours one day, seven says a week, while her husband had to make a living for his family and could not help her too much.He often went out on business

13、 and Lynette could not see him for half a month.Thus ,she always felt helpless and loneliness , and also accused herself of a failing mother.On one hand, because of her strong desire for control , she wanted to take over her marriage as she did in her work.She could not bear sharing her husband with

14、 other women.Onthe other hand,her husband was male chauvinism.He wanted Lynette to be a stay-at-home housewife and he even disregarded her own feelings.Lynette realized the flaws in her characteristic and wanted to do some make up.What Lynette acted in the serial was an ideal housewife in many mens

15、eyes.She bore her husbands affairs for many times.She tried to deal with these affairs with her husband and save their marriage.This role had a strong symbolism.Only were womenbe tolerant and sacrificed could they save their marriage.Women should know how to control men and family ,which meant , in

16、other words , sacrificing their own job.Feminists longed for the balance between family and society while Lynette opted to take over her family by giving up her job.3.3 Analysis of Susan MayerSusan was a professional illustrator for childrens book.She had such a kind nature but sometimes she would f

17、eel confusion.She would like to help others but in return,she always mademistakes or troubles.Even though ,she still believed that everything would be fine.Susan showed her excellence on work and she was the idol of typical city female.She was docile and obedient to her husband.However , her husband

18、 divorced with her, because of his youngsecretary.Susan was the woman that would sacrifice everything for her children and her family.But regardless of her objection ,her daughter fell in love with a neighbor boy at an early age.After her ownmarriage becamea failure , she did not believe in love.At

19、that time , a young, handsome plumper ,Mike Delfino movedto her neighbor house.To Susan, he lightened the candle of love and passion again.So she bravely expressed her affection to him.Susan, adivorced woman , held an ignorant view on love and marriage.She was eager for a long and loyal marriage but

20、 she was the one who had the most complicated love in this serial.In her sub consciousness, she thought herself was weak and could not live without men.Whenshe had troublesshe needed mento help her get rid of them.She blamed that , in American society ,men could find their new girlfriend and separat

21、ed with their wives, despite how women wouldfeel.She also blamed that it was unfair and too hard for a divorced womanto find a job , to sustain her children and family by her own.3.4 Analysis of Gabrielle SolisGabrielle was a typical materialism of woman.She was fascinating and charming , scheming a

22、nd ambitious.Though she was born in a not very rich family ,she madeown efforts to pursue the peak of her job.She also married a rich merchant ,and started the life of being a noblewoman.Because of her wealthy ,beauty and hot , many housewives envied her life.But her loneliness after marriage result

23、ed in her affairs.Sometimes , she had a strong self ego.But in the five years when her husband lost sight , she madean utmost effort to support her husband and two children.When her husband told her that he wanted a baby to connect them much closer , Gabrielle rejected at first , for she was afraid

24、that she might lose her slim body and beauty.Thus , she and her husband employed a Chinese womanto pregnant for her.However, this plan failed as a resultthat the womangave birth to a black baby due to the medical mistake.After that ,her husband still asked her to pregnant personally.She made a stron

25、g repulse.She thought women also had the right to choose whether they wanted a baby or not.But finally ,she was touched by her husbands eagerness and later they had two lovely daughters.4.ConclusionAs one of the most popular American serials ,Desperate Housewives, which had excellent performance of

26、the actors and ups and downs of plot , was no doubted the epitome of American life and American society.Through this serial , we could see the happiness and sorrow of American society.It provided us a good stage to study American language and social culture.It let us attach the seriousness to feminism on the vision and we could get the social meaning and cultural connotation from heroines image
