11、 approach is getting more and more widely used in english teachingthe application of it is based on the view that english should be taught as a communicative tool,not merely a kind of the knowledge of languagein this casethe students speaking ability must be the most important thing for teachers to

12、improvehowever, it is a very difficulty jobhow can we manage it? this is the very subject i want to deal with. here in my essay, some issues related to improving spoken english are to be discussed in the following three parts 1. the analysis of reasons for junior students poor spoken englishmany of

13、the junior students who can get good grades in an english exam are unable to communicate with people in english frequentlyfirst this is because they dont have a good language surrounding to speak english as much as possiblethey only have chances to practice their spoken english in classas everyone k

14、nows,in china there are 50 or more junior students in each classthis makes it impossible for a teacher to give every junior student an opportunity to speak english in only forty five minutessecondly this is because lack of confidence. junior students are not quite sure about what to say when they sp

15、eak englishtheir faces become red before they begin to speak englishthey are afraid to make a lot of mistakes while speakingthey are afraid of being laughed at by others as wellso the more they think of this,the more they afraid to open their mouthsso the more they think of this,the more they afraid

16、 to open their mouthssome of the junior students with low speaking ability dont have enough vocabularies and the ability of telling the grammar constructionthirdly, we dont have a speaking test in chinese junior middle schoo1.if a student can speak english fluently but he cant get high marks in engl

19、enjoy losing facesmany chinese junior students are afraid of making mistakes. sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervousperhaps this makes them afraid if starting conversationsbut students should remember that their goal should be fluency not accuracyyou wan

20、t to get your message across,to talk to somebody as quickly and as well as you canand sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense,but it doesnt matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for many mistakes he hears. making mistakes in a conversation is not a

21、 crimeenglish speakers actually make plenty of mistakes in their english,toohe who makes no mistakes makes nothingin addition,be confident while speaking englishdont fear that people may laugh at your pronunciationin fact it is no problem if you have your own accent because there are many regional k

22、inds of englishyou dont have to sound like the queen of the england or the president of the united states of americabut your accent must be close to the standardsso in your spare time turn on your tv or radio and watch or listening to programs like hoping english,bbc or nbc and you will hear many di

23、fferent people from germany, france and other nonenglish speaking countriesthey all have good accentsthis will help you a lotand you must 1earn to speak in publicyour voice should be loud and cleardont feel shy and dont be afraid of being laughed at2.2 taking every chance to speak and talk in englis

24、hif you want to improve your spoken english,you must take every chance to speak and talk in english in and out of classmost junior students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken english,they passively wait for spea

25、king opportunities to come to themnative english speakers will not come to you and ask,“would you like to practice english with me?” so what you have to do is to maximize your speaking chances and look for chances to speak and listen to english instead of passively waiting for others to teach you. i

26、f you have this proactive outlook,you will see opportunities wherever you go. also sometimes there is too much emphasis on formal textbooksi find some people have a good understanding of formal,proper englishbut when they meet foreigner in real life who speak informal or slang english,they dont unde

27、rstand very muchi think that shows the importance of trying to find more opportunities to use your english,to practice and also more exposure to practical everyday english instead of formal textbook english.2.3 putting what you have learned into practiceyou should put what you have learned into prac

28、ticewhen you have learned a worda sentence pattern or a dialogue,you must try to learn them by heartfor example , when youve learned a word or a phase today, you should try to speak it and use it once until youve finally understood in what situation the word or phase youve learned should be used and

29、 dont be afraid of making mistakestry to think in english whenever possiblewhen you see something,think of the english word for itthen think about the word in a sentenceso in your daily life,when you come across something you dont understand,a new word or something,youre always learning,you re alway

33、 important ways that junior students learn to speak englishteachers should try their best to organize the classroom teaching in english as much as possible and communicate with junior students in simple englishalso teachers should try to create english situation in class since its nearly impossible

34、for junior students to get in touch with foreigners frequentlyfor instance,lesson 58 of book 2 is about making a telephone callbefore class,i asked every student to take a toy telephone to the classroomthen i told them to make up their own dialogues and act them out by themselvessome of them make di

37、fidence and arousing their interest of learning englisheinstein once said“interest is the best teacher” it is true that interest is the key to learning a foreign languageit can arouse their desire of learning,drive them to study and correct their attitude towards studyas a english teacher, its your

38、responsibility to arouse junior students interest of learning englishso english classes should be proceed lively and interestingfor example,once i taught the model verbs“can”and“cant”, i pretended to be hurt in the arm,and said when 1 went into the classroom,“just now i fell off the bike and my arm

39、got hurti cant write now”when i spoke of“can”i intentionally repeated it several times,then i said to a junior student with glasses,“can you see the sentence on the blackboard clearly?”the student answered,“yes,i can”then i said to him,“now take off your glasses,pleasecan you see the sentence on the

40、 blackboard clearly now?”the junior student answered, “no,i cant.”if you teach in this way in english classes,i think,the students are sure to be interested in what the teacher saysit can cultivate their interest and abilityteachers should encourage junior students in time when they have made progre

41、ssin class,when the junior students answer the questions correctly, you must express our satisfaction with“well done!”“very good!”“excellent!”or“youre very clever!”when the students are slow in answering the questions,you should be patient enough to help them outeven when they cant answer the questi

45、more speaking,more reading and more listeningfrom another point of view, oral english and written english complement each otherin my teaching experience,i have tried the following approaches that proved efficient in improving junior students spoken english3.3.1 duty. reportduty report is generally d

46、one by one or two students on duty at the beginning of an english classthe junior students should face the whole class while talkingthe contents of the report are free,for instance,their daily life,likes and dislikes,a funny story, an important newsteachers can also choose some suitable topics for j

47、unior studentsbut the topics must be fit for junior students level and tastesensure that every student must take part in the activityto those who have difficulty in expressing their opinions,teachers should help them if necessaryalthough the whole report only lasts three minutes or more,it can play

48、a very important role in improving junior students spoken englishit can also arouse their wide interest. its a good device of reinforcement3.3.2 role-playwhat is role-play? when students assume a role,they play a part (either their own or somebody elses in a specific situation)in our junior middle s

49、chool english textbooks,most of the texts are complied in the forms of dialogues,stories,and plays. so it is possible for teachers to ask the students to practice english according to the characteristicsrole play activity may be done in the following procedure:firstly,choose the suitable dialogue or

50、 play, which the junior students are likely to encounter in their present or future communicationsfor example,shopping,making appointments,seeing a doctor, talking about a concert,asking the way and so onsecondly,give the role cards to the students so as to let them know what to dothirdly,allow them

51、 a few minutes to prepareand finally, the role play activity beginsin the course of demonstration,the students can use any phrases,idioms and sentence patterns theyve learnedwhether the performance is good or not,it will successfully create light atmosphere and make the students learn spoken english

52、 in entertainmentthere is a saying by franklin,“tell me,and ill forgetteach me and i11 rememberinvolve me and ill learn”for instance,i once asked some students to act out the story a question of pronunciation in classit was very interesting funny and successfulafter a few years,the students told me

53、that they still remembered the situation quite clearly3.3.3 group workto work in small groups allows students to talk more informally and it also fosters a sense of cooperation in the classroomyou may assign students groups or allow them to choose their ownthe easiest way to form groups is to have j

54、unior students who are sitting near each other pull their chairs togetherhowever, to ensure that the groups arent always the samebefore beginning the activity, be sure that everyone understands the meaning of the new words and knows hoe to proceedif anyone is unsure,you can explain the new words and

55、 present a sample activity with a few students helponce the students are in group,help them choose a group reporter to report back to the classyou may also wish to assign a group leader whose job is to keep everyone involved in the task at handby having students work in small groups,you increase the
