She then took her best clothes out of her wardrobe and put them into her small, dusty old suitcase which was leaning against the wall. She took the money which she kept inside an empty chocolate box hidden between the wardrobe and the wall and put it into her pocket. She took a note for her parents out of a drawer and placed it onto her dressing table. Carefully, she opened the door and crept along the corridor, past, her parents room and down the dark staircase into the hall. She made her way towards the back door and opened it. Closing it quietly behind her, she moved silently across the garden and climbed over the low garden gate. For a few minutes, she stood at the gate and looked back at the sleeping house. Then she turned and walked quickly away to begin a new life.,26. What season was it in the story?,27. What was inside the chocolate box?,28. When he got back to America he met the artist Ub Iwerks and they got into business together.,They made a series of short cartoons but lost all their money. Luckily, Walts brother Roy gave him more to start up again. The first talking picture came out in 1927 and Disney saw that sound held the key to the future of film.,He built on this success with other cartoons but soon felt ready for something more ambitious. He took the biggest risk of his career and spent a fortune on a full-length cartoon. He finally brought out “Snow White” in 1935, which the public paid millions of dollars to see. By the time he was 40, Disney and his creations was household names around the world.,29. When was Disney born?,30. Who helped Disney out after his failure?,31. When did the first talking picture come out?,Passage Three,A healthy diet and improved living conditions, together with advances in medical treatment, have meant that most people, in the developed countries at least, are living longer. This is very good news for the people concerned, especially if they remain reasonably healthy.,However, the increase in life expectancy has led to problems for many governments. Many older people require a good deal of care, either help with personal care or nursing care. Often, this care has to be provided in a residential home or a nursing home, when the elderly people do not have family, who are able to or willing to look after them. Governments are finding it increasingly difficult to find the money for this and the elderly people often do not have the money to pay for it themselves.,The trouble is that, as the numbers of old people are increasing, the numbers of young people are decreasing. Reliable modern methods of birth control have led to successful family planning with many people choosing to restrict the number of children they have to one or two, feeling, perhaps, that this is all they can afford or cope with.,The combination of a falling birth rate and an increase in life expectancy is likely to cause problems for governments. It is the young and the middle-aged who do most work and pay most taxes. In other words, it is they who keep the country going, for it is the income from taxes that pays for public services and state benefits.,The lack of balance between the number of the young and the old is, thus, very worrying in financial terms. There are too few people working to provide the necessary funds to pay for a state benefit system which looks after those who are, for one reason or another, unable to work.,One rather harsh solution is to increase greatly the rate of taxation payable by those who are in work. Another is to increase the age of retirement, and yet another is to try to attract healthy people who are already in retirement ba
