“The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium(千年), was made up of three parts“The Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers”, and “The Return of the King”. Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative materwork.John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892. His parents died when he was a child. Living in England with his aunt, Tolkien and his cousins made up play languages, a hobby that led to Tolkiens becoming skilled in Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien served in World War I. In 1917, while recovering from trench fever, he began composing the mythology for The Rings. As a professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1930s at Oxford, Tolkien was part of an informal discussion group called the Inklings, which included several writers. The group was soon listening to chapters of Tolkiens imaginative work “The Hobbit”.Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural(乡村的)class. Hobbits live in hillside holes. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, looks for treasures with a group of dwarves(侏儒). On the way, he meets the twisted, pitiful creature Gollum, from whom he sees a golden ring that makes the holder invisible. One of Tolkiens students persuaded her employer, publisher Allen & Unwin, to look at a draft(草稿). The chairman of the firm, Stanley Unwin, thought that the best judge for a childrens book would be his ten-year-old son. The boy earned a shilling for reporting back that the adventure was exciting, and “The Hobbit” was published in 1937.It sold so well that Unwin asked for a continuation. Over a dozen years later, in 1954, Tolkien produced “The Lord of the Rings”, a series of books so creative that they hold readersnew and old after their publication.1. What can we learn from the text?A. “The Lord of the Rings” didnt sell well in the last millennium.B. People know better about Tolkien himself than about his works.C. Tolkien was quite familiar with Old English.D. Tolkien knew very well about different kinds of local languages in Africa.2. What can we learn about “Hobbit” that Tolkien created in his works?A. Hobbit was a race living in English downtown areas.B. Hobbit was a local people who were very tall and strong.C. Hobbit was a social group of people who lived in old castles.D. Hobbit was a group of people who were mostly dwarves.3. Which of the following helped most in making “The Hobbit” published?A. One of Tolkiens students.B. Stanley Unwins son.C. Allen & Unwin.D. Bilbo Baggins.4. What is mainly discussed in the text?A. “The Lord of the Rings” and its writer.B. A completely new masterwork in the new millennium.C. A famous professor at Oxford University.D. The power of the magic ring.5. Which of the following shows the right order of Mr. J.R.R.Tolkiens life experience?a. He had his “The Hobbit” published.b. He became a member of the Inklings.c. He served in World Ward. He became an undergraduate at Oxford.e. His work “The Lord of the Rings” came to the world.f. He moved to England to live with his aunt.A. f-d-b-c-a-eB. f-d-c-b-a-eC. f-c-d-b-e-aD. d-f-c-a-b-e1、答案解析:答案为C。 由第一段首句 “The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium.” 由第一段后面的 “Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative materwork.” Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon. 由文章第四段 “Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural class. Hobbits live in hillside holes.” 尽管文章倒数第二段首句提到 “One of Tolkiens students persuaded her employer, publisher Allen & Unwin, to look at a draft .” 但是后文又提到 “ The chairman of the firm, Stanley Unwin, thought that the best judge for a childrens book would be his ten-year-old son” 故可以推断,对于The Hobbit的出版起着决定作用的应该是Stanley Unwins son。 由第一段最后一句 “but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative materwork.” The Lord of the Rings When he thought of the past,my grandfather would sometimes show us photographs of himself at school. They were brown and faded, and it was hard to believe that the blurred figure of the little boy in the short trousers and socks could ever have been Grandfather.Besides,he wore a capand the boys in the photographs wore caps pulled so far forward that half of their faces were obscured. When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group,we would surely point to the wrong boy.On one such occasion my younger sister, aged six, burst into tears when Grandfather proudly guided her finger to the right boy.“How could that boy be you?”she cried.“He should have a heard.”We were,of course, all convinced that grandfathers should have beards, preferably white and bushy, like our own grandfathers.“I was a good scholar,”Grandfather would say, wagging his beard over the photographs.“I should have been top of the class if I hadnt had to get up at six every morning to milk the cows and chop the wood, and again when I came home from school.”“But Saturdays? What did you do on Saturdays?”“Saturdays,if it was fine,Id be out all day in the fields with the men,”replied Grandfather. “And if it was wet,Id be helping my mother with odd jobs round the house. There wasnt much time for studying.”We all tried hard to imagine what it would have been like to have been Grandfather getting up at crack of dawn and never, obviously, having a moment for himself. It seemed we had learnt something from what Grandfather had said about his childhood.1In the first paragraph of this passage, what the author really tells us is that_.A. his grandfather used to wear short trousers, socks and a cap as wellBit was difficult to tell which of the boys in the photographs was GrandfatherChe didnt believe Grandfather wore a cap pulled forward when he was at schoolDit was fun to watch boys in the photographs wearing caps pulled forward答案:B细节判断题,可用直接就题找题法来解。 When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group,we would surely point to the wrong boy. B。2The authors sister burst into tears because_.A. she did not get a chance to pick out Grandfather in the photographsBshe was told which was the right boy before she herself could pick him outCother children did not agree with her that Grandfather should have had a beardDshe found Grandfather in the photographs did not have a beard答案:D细节判断题,可用直接就题找题法来解。由短文第二段第二句:“How could that boy be you?”she cried.“He should have a beard.” 3When Grandfather said,“I should have been top of the class.”,be meant_.A. if he had had more time for studying,he would have been the best in his classBhe should have spent more time studying rather than playing ball gamesChis school days should not have been so hard and miserableDhe could have never been the best student even if he had studied still harder答案:A推理判断题,可用逻辑推断法来解。 4In the last paragraph the author said,“We all tried hard to imagine.”because_.A. the figures of the boys in the photographs were small and blurredBthe children had never experienced life like that of GrandfatherCthe photographs Grandfather showed them were brown and fadedDGrandfather failed to tell them about his childhood in detail答案:B推理判断题,可用逻辑推断法来解。 Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential(潜在的) resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spinoffs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even nonstick pans and mirrored sunglasses are byproducts(副产品) of technological developments in the space industry! While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.1Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?ATo express his doubts.BTo compare different ideas.CTo introduce points for discussion.DTo describe the conditions on Earth.2What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2?AHumans are natureborn to do so.BHumans have the tendency to fight.CHumans may find new sources of food.DHumans dont like to stay in the same place.3The underlined word “spinoffs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to _.Asurvival chances Bpotential resourcesCunexpected benefits Dphysical possessions4What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?AOur genetic makeup. BResources on the earth.CThe adaptive ability of humans.DByproducts in space exploration. 2解析:选 A。 后面所说的“improvements in earthquake prediction,in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems”可知此处的划线短语意为“益处,好处”。 Since I started working part-time at a grocery store, I have learned that a customer is more than someone who buys things. To me, a customer is a person whose memory fails entirely once he or she starts to push a shopping cart(车). One of the first things customers forget is how to count. There is no other way to explain how so many people get in their express line, which is clearly marked 15 items(件) or less, with 20, 25 or even a cart load of items.Customers also forget why they came to the store in the first place. Just as I finish ringing up an order, a customer will say, “ Oops, I forgot to pick up a fresh loaf of bread. I hope you dont mind waiting, while I go to get it.”Five minutes later, hes back with the bread, a bottle of milk, and three rolls of paper towels. Wh
