文档简介
AJean-Francois Millet (October 4, 1814January 20,1875) was a French painter who was famous for his scenes of farmers. After his first painting, a portrait (肖像), was accepted at the Salon of 1840, Millet returned to Cherbourg to begin a career as a portrait painter. However, the following year he married Pauline- Virginie Ono, and they moved to Paris. After being refused at the Salon of 1843 and Paulines death, Millet returned again to Cherbourg. In 1845 Millet moved to Le Harvre where he painted portraits for several months, before moving back to Paris. It was in Paris in the middle 1840s that Millet made friends with many famous artists who had great influences on him. Then he gradually revolutionized his painting style and created his own one. This is the most well known of Millets paintings, The Gleaners (拾穗者), in which poor women and children are removing the bits of grain left in the fields following the harvest. A warm golden light suggests something holy (神圣的) in this daily scene where the struggle to survive takes place. During his years of studies, Millet thought about how to best tell the sense of repetition and tiredness in the peasants daily lives. Lines traced over each womans back to the ground and then back up again and again which means their hard labor. Along the horizon (地平线), the setting sun outlines the farm with its plentiful stacks of grain, in contrast to the large shadowy figures in the foreground (前台). The dark dresses of the gleaners cut strong forms against the golden field, giving each woman a noble strength. In 1857, he presented the painting The Gleaners to the Salon to an unfriendly public.36. Hunted to die out throughout Europe, beavers havent roamed in Britains wilderness for almost 500 years. Ecologists would like to invite back other long-lost animals to help recover the natural balance. To save the countrys plants from deer, which have doubled to 2 million since the start of this decade, an Oxford University biologist late last year called for introducing the lynx(猞猁) that died out in Britain 1,300 years ago. Nature has long been a popular cause in Europe. British people love their countryside of fences and fields, and the Germans love their hiking forests. But in recent years people have set their sights on the more distant past, when Europes forests were filled with elephants, rhinoceroses and big cats. Some people are even now advocating a return to the way of wilderness that dates back to the Pleistocene era, more than 11,000 years ago.Nobody is advocating allowing elephants and lions to run crazily in big cities. But supporters would give free control to a long list of small mammals, including the beaver and lynx, which some people fear could be dangerous. Some landowners are worried at the thought of beavers cutting down trees and possible floods; the Scottish parliament refused several earlier efforts to introduce the mammal. Proposals to set wolves and bears free in Britain have also met with opposition.Although the beavers and the lynxes were popular in Europe thousands of years ago, no one is sure what effect they would have on ecosystems now. “The idea of bringing back big animals is interesting, but when you take it seriously, there are a lot of questions,” say some biologists. For example, elephants could destroy what little forest and grassland Europe has left. The beavers of Tierra del Fuego provide a lesson. When a failed commercial fur farm released its few remaining beavers into the wild 60 years ago, the population exploded, and are still harming the local people. Is this Britains future? Supporters say no, the beaver will fit right in. Destroying nature is not a job for the wild.41. The underlined word “roamed” most probably means_. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who who wrote that widows and widowers(鳏夫)were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers.Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a mans life and two to a womans. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm. Even if the odds are stacked against you(the conditions are not favourable),marriage can more than compensate.Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart.Likewise,a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesnt smoke.Theres a flip side, however,as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouses; death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems.Even so,the odds favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people,Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors,health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms(机制).For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life.People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100.The best social network is still being mapped out,but Christakis says:”People are interconnected,so their health is interconnected.”41. William Farrs study and other studies show that_.A. social life provides an effective cure for illnessB. Being sociable helps improve ones quality of lifeC. Women benefit more than men from marriageD. Marriage contributes a great deal to longevity【答案】D【解析】细节理解题。根据the biggest longevity(长寿)boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalen
