Such groupings as Help Wanted, Real Estate, Lost and Found are made, the rate charged being less than for display advertising. Classified advertisements are a(n) _(42)_ to the reader and a saving to the advertiser. The reader who is interested in a particular kind of advertisement finds all advertisements of that type grouped for him. The advertisers may, on this _(43)_, use a very small advertisement that would be lost if it were placed among larger advertisements in the paper. It is _(44)_ that the reader approaches the classified advertisement in a different frame of mind from that in which he approaches the other advertisements in the paper. He turns to a page of classified advertisements to search for the _(45)_ advertisement that will meet his needs. As the readers attention is _(46)_, the advertiser does not need to rely to much _(47)_ on display type to get the readers attention. Formerly all classified advertisements were of the same size and did not have display type. With the increase in the number of such advertisements, however, each advertiser within a certain group is _(48)_ with others in the same group for the readers attention. In many cases the result has been an increase in the size of the space used and the _(49)_ of headlines and pictures. In that way the classified advertisement has in reality become a display advertisement. This is particularly true of real estate advertising. H42. D43. G44. A45. I46. C47. J48. F49. Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities.Of course, there have always been people who have locked for adventurethose who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now,however, there are people who try to find an immediate thrill(毛骨悚然)from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place(perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon)200 meters above the ground with an elastic(有弹性的)rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground.Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs(峭壁).Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists(心理学家)suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring(令人厌烦). Not very long ago, peoples lives were constantly under threat. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.Life, according to many people, offers little excitement. They live and work safely and comfortably. The answer for some of these people is to try to find danger in activities such as bungee jumping.5.Which of the following is the best title for this test?A.Bungee jumping;a dangerous sport B.Bungee jumping;an exciting sportC.Dangerous sports;what and how? D.Dangerous sports;what and why?6.People take part in dangerous sports mainly because_.A.they want to have a change in sports B.there is not much work for them to do C.there is not much excitement in their lives D.they are curious about such sports7.It seemed that the writer of the text is _.A.afraid of dangerous sports B.against dangerous sportsC.for dangerous sports D.neither for nor against dangerous sports5.D整篇文章讲述了人们玩哪些危险运动以及原因。 EMass transportation revised the social and economic fabric(结构) of the American city in three fundamental ways. It catalyzed(加速) physical expansion, it sorted out people and land uses, and it accelerated the inherent instability of urban life. By opening vast areas of unoccupied land for residential expansion, the omnibuses, horse railways, commuter trains, and electric tro lleys pulled settled regions outward two to four times more distant form city centers than they were in the premodern era. In 1850, for example, the borders of Boston lay scarcely two miles from the old business district; by the turn of the century the radius extended ten miles. Now those who could afford it could live far removed from the old city center and still commute there for work, shopping, and entertainment. The new accessibility of land around the periphery(周围)of almost every major city sparked an explosion of real estate development and fueled what we now know as urban sprawl. Between 1890 and 1920, for example, some 250,000 new residential lots were recorded within the borders of Chicago, most of them located in outlying areas. Over the same period, another 550,000 were plotted outside the city limits but within the metropolitan area. Anxious to take advantage of the possibilities of commuting, real estate developers added 800,000 potential building sites to the Chicago region in just thirty years lots that could have housed five to six million people.Of course, many were never occupied; there was always a huge surplus of subdivided, but vacant, land around Chicago and other cities. These excesses underscore a feature of residential expansion related to the growth of mass transportation: urban sprawl(建筑物无计划延伸) was essentially unplanned. It was carried out by thousands of small investors who paid little heed to coordinated land use or to future land users. Those who purchased and prepared land for residential purposes, particularly land near or outside city borders where transit lines and middle-class inhabitants were anticipated, did so to create demand as much as to respond to it. Chicago is a prime example of this process. Real estate subdivision (再划分小区)there proceeded much faster than population growth.72With which of the following subjects is the passage mainly concerned? ATypes of mass transportation. BInstability of urban life. CHow supply and demand determine land use. DThe effect of mass transportation on urban expansion.73Why does the author mention both Boston and Chicago? ATo demonstrate positive and negative effects of growth. BTo exemplify cities with and without mass transportation. CTo show mass transportation changed many cities. DTo contrast their rate of growth.74According to the passage, what was one disadvantage of residential expansion? AIt was expensive. BIt happened too slowly. CIt was unplanned. DIt created a demand for public transportation. 75The author mentions Chicago in the second paragraph as an example of a city, Athat is large. Bthat is used as a model for land development. Cwhere the development of land exceeded population growth. Dwith an excellent mass transportation system.72D 【解析】主旨大意题。 A. A. A 城市大。
