If only I could read to my real grandchild!I had a granddaughter, but Id never met her. Sixteen years earlier my son had a marriage that ended badly. But out of it came a blessing: a baby girl named Lena. I hoped to be a grandmother to her but shortly after the birth, the mother moved without any address left. Over the years, I asked around town to try and find my sons ex-wife (前妻), but it seemed that she didnt want to be found.Id just joined this new church a week earlier, and was at once offered the part of Grandma in the play. At least now I could pretend to be a grandma. The rehearsals (排练) went well, and finally the day of the show arrived. The performance was great. “You all looked so natural up there,” one of my friends said.Afterward, we went to the church basement for some tea. I walked over to one of the girls in the play. Rehearsals had been so busy that we never really got to talk. “Hows my granddaughter?” I joked.“Fine!” she answered. Just then, someone else walked up and asked the girl her name.I wasnt sure I heard the girls answer correctly. But it made me ask her another question. “Whats your mothers name?”She told me. I was still in shock. “And whats your fathers name?” I asked. She told me. It was my son.Shed only started going to that church a week before I did. Since that day of the play, weve stayed close. Not long ago, she even made me a great grandma.31. What was the author doing at the beginning of the story?A. Telling a story.B. Playing a game.C. Preparing for a play.D. Acting in a movie.32. Cats, dogs, and other pets top the list, followed by zoo animals. However, because its hard to get them to sit still and “perform on command,” some professional photographers refuse to photograph pets. One way to get an attractive portrait of a cat or dog is to hold a biscuit or treat above the camera. The animals longing look toward the food will be caught by the camera, but the treat wont appear in the picture because its out of the cameras range. When you show the picture to your friends afterwards, theyll be impressed by your pets loving expression. If you are using fast film, you can take some good, quick shots of a pet by simply snapping a picture right after calling its name. Youll get a different expression from your pet using this technique. Depending on your pets mood, the picture will capture an interested, curious expression or possibly a look of annoyance, especially if youve awakened it from a nap.Taking pictures of zoo animals requires a little more patience. After all, you cant wake up a lion! You may have to wait for a while until the animal does something interesting or moves into a position for you to get a good shot. When photographing zoo animals, dont get too close to the cages, and never tap on the glass or throw things between the bars of a cage. Concentrate on shooting some good pictures, and always respect the animals you are photographing.35. Why do some professional photographers dislike to take pictures of pets?A. Pets may not follow orders.B. Pets dont want to be bothered.C. Pets may not like photographers.D. Pets seldom change their expressions.36. What is the use of a biscuit in taking pictures of a pet? A. To capture a attractive look.B. To create a special atmosphere.C. To arouse the appetite of the pet.D. To keep the pet from looking at the camera.37. What is the advantage of calling your pets name when taking a shot of it?A. To help your pet look its best.B. To make sure that your pet sits still.C. To keep your pet awake for a while.D. To catch a different expression of your pet.38. In what way is photographing zoo animals different from photographing pets?A. You need to have fast film. B. You need more time to watch and wait.C. You need special equipment.D. You need to stay close to the animals.CNew York Hall of Science (NYHS)Founded in 1964, it is New York Citys only hands-on science and technology center. It took only about an hour to read. When I first received a copy, I thought it was a Get Rich Quick type of publication. Nothing is wrong with Get Rich Quick, but my mind just doesnt run after dreams of wealth. I think that if God ever wants me to be rich, he knows where to find my purse. When I began reading When Money Talks, Listen!, I was overjoyed to find that Rich Ezzo isnt money hungry either. He, too, is hungry far more important than money.Since I love this e-book so much, why wait a week to write the review? Simple. I wanted to see if the effect it had on me was a keeper. After reading the last word of the e-book, I totally agreed with the subtitle (副标题) which promised to forever change the way we thought about money. I had so many thoughts running around my mind that I had to install (安装) a stoplight to stop some while others made their way into the picture, then I yielded (让路) them as a few ones arrived in town. I had a mental traffic jam, which only goes to show how slow the traffic usually is.It has been a week and the effect is the same. I truly do look at money differently and have even done a few things differently this week. This is an e-book youll want to read, I promise. I often recommend books to my daughter, and this is one that I didnt just “suggest” I left it open at the bottom of the computer and told each one, “Read it, youll love it.”I would never point someone in a direction I wouldnt go myself. I strongly advise you to visit the authors website, Myster Money, and to download the e-book. You wont regret it.43. The author wrote this passage to _.A. strongly recommend an e-bookB. show the authors attitude to moneyC. introduce the general idea of an e-bookD. point out Rich Ezzo isnt money hungry44. According to the passage, a Get Rich Quick type of publication _.A. is more popular than e-booksB. deals with how to make moneyC. is what the author really cares forD. is also an e-book written by Rich Ezzo45. Why didnt the author write the review as soon as he finished reading the book?A. Because he was not sure whether he did well.B. Because he was too excited to write anything.C. Because he had to wait for Rich Ezzos permission.D. Because he wondered if it would have long influence on him.46. Which of the following is supported by the passage?A. The author had known Rich Ezzo before.B. The author always prefers e-books to paper books.C. The author likes Get Rich Quick type of publications.D. The author hasnt dreamed of getting rich immediately.EDo you want to love what you do for a living? Follow your passion (激情). This piece of advice provides the foundation for modern thinking on career satisfaction. But this can be a problem.Ive spent the past several years researching and writing about the different strategies (策略) we use to seek happiness in our work. It became clear early in the process that the suggestion to “follow your passion” had some mistakes, for it lacks scientific evidence. However, it doesnt mean you should abandon the goal of feeling passionate about your work. The reality emphasizes that things are quite complicated.Passion is earned. Different people are looking for different things in their work, but generally, people with satisfying careers enjoy some combination of the following features: autonomy, respect, competence, creativity, and a sense of impact. In other words, if you want to feel passionate about your livelihood, dont seek the perfect job, but seek to get more of these features in the job you already have.Passion is elusive. Many people develop the rare and valuable skills leading to passion, but still end up unhappy in their work. The problem is that the features leading you to love your work are more likely to be useful to you than your organization. As you become increasingly “valuable”, for example, your boss might push you toward traditional promotions that come with more pay and more responsibility, as this is what is most useful to your company. However, you might find more passion by applying your value to gain autonomy in your schedule or project selection.Passion is dangerous. Ive watched too many of my peers fall into anxiety and constant job-hopping due to the “follow your passion” advice. The issue is expectations. If you believe we all have a pre-existing passion, and that matching it to a job will lead to instant workplace happiness, reality will always pale in comparison.Work is hard. Not every day is fun. If youre seeking a dream job, youll end up disappointed, again and again. Dont set out to discover passion. Instead, set out to develop it. This path might be longer and more complicated than what most cheerful career guides might support, but its a path much more likely to lead you somewhere worth going.47. People satisfied with their careers are _.A. autonomous and passionateB. creative and competentC. respectable and sensitiveD. creative and passionate48. What does the underlined word “elusive” in the 4th paragraph most probably mean?A. Easy to dev
