文档简介
AEvery year at the start of a new school year, college freshman are occupied in dealing with the enrollment procedures and settling themselves in their new dormitories. Their parents, the superprotective Chinese ones, will always follow their children everywhere , anxious and worried. However, the new policy of Tsinghua University this semester is sending a message: boys and girls, its time to become independent. On movein day, a tallow line was drawn across the entrance of school area, separating parents from their children. The students themselves had to spend about three hours registering and finding their dormitories.By doing this, the university is asking students to“start this new adventure by standing on their own feet”, said Chen Jinjing, president of Tsinghua。Following Tsinghua, other university have also made policies to encourage students to enroll alone.Oujiang College ,at Wenzhou University in Zhejiang ,has opened an online platform for freshmen to contact senior schoolmates who can guide them on enrollment day .Renmin University asked senior students to return to their hometowns and accompany freshmen to school. This change has excited many freshmen. Li Ming, a Tsinghua freshman from Gansu province, took a train to Beijing with only one schoolmate .“Its my first long trip without my parents, and I am quite excited about it,”he said. “Coming to the university begins a new stage of my life, and I should learn to take care of myself from the start. ”Although some say such policies are not enough to make students independent, many believe it can help start to change the situation. “Such campaigns help students realize they have to live on their own ,” said Xiong Bingqi, vice-president of the 21st Century Education Research Institute.“The lack of independence has been a major concern for kids born in the 1990s, as parents arranged everything, which hampered (阻碍) childrens all-around development.”Xiong added.21.From the passage we can infer that_. The influence of a conversation between a child and an adult is about five times as great as that of adult speech input alone, according to the researchers findings. “Adults speaking to children helps language develop ,but what matters much more is the ineraction.”said the studys lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the Universaty of California,Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didnt have much of an effectositively or negativelyas long as it wasnt replacing conversations between an adult and a child. The study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes and education. The researchers found that , in an average day , children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and participated in about 400 adult-child conversations a day.Assessed separately, factors positively associated with language development included each additional 100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When locked at home alone,TV was negatively associated with language development. But ,when the three factors were analyzed together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children.“The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult , the better idea a parent has about where the child is.” Zimmerman said, “Although its mostly done unconsciously, parents will provide feedback and correct mistakes.Theyll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what theyre doing ,for example, Im putting on your pajamas now . But give your child the opportunity to talk , hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment .” she added. “If parents can carve out some conversation time maybe at bath time or at dinner thats a wonderful thing. ”25.What s the best title of the passage? A.parents-child conversation can be carried out at any proper time B.parents should let a child repeat what he or she says C.parents should leave a child talking alone D.bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a child 28.Frederick Zimmerman would probably agree that_. This data flood is already starting to transform business, government, science and everyday life. It has great potential for good-as long as consumers, companies and governments make the right choices about when to restrict the flow of data, and when to encourage it. A few industries have led the way in their ability to gather and take advantage of the data. Credit-card companies monitor every purchase and can identify cheats with a high degree of accuracy. Stolen credit cards are more likely to be used to buy hard liquor than wine, for example, because it is easier to overlook. Insurance firms are also good at combining clues to spot doubtful claims: dishonest claims are more likely to be made on a Monday then a Tuesday, since policyholders(保险客户) who arrange accidents tend to assemble friends as false witnesses over the weekend. By combining many such clues, it is possible to work out which cards are likeliest to have been stolen, and which claims are untrue. By analyzing “basket data”, supermarkets can make promotions to appeal to particular customers preferences. The oil industry uses supercomputers to help them before drilling wells. But the data flood also poses risks. There are many examples of datas being stolen: disks full of social-security data go missing , laptops loaded with tax records are left in taxis, credit-card numbers are stolen by online purchase. The result can be privacy made public, identity stolen and cheats permitted large space. Rather than owning and controlling their own person data, they very often find that they have lost control of it. The best way to deal with the data flood is to make more data available in the right way, by requiring greater transparency in several areas. First, users should be given greater access to and control over the information held about them, including whom it is shared with. Google allows users to see what information it holds about them, and lets them delete their search histories or modify the targeting of advertising, for example .Second, organizations should be required to disclose details of security breaches(泄密),as is already the case in some parts of the world ,to encourage bosses to take information security more seriously. Third, organizations should be subject to an annuai security check, with the resulting grade made public (though details of any problems exposed would not be). This would encourage companies to keep their security measures up to date.32.From the passage we can infer that_. A.credit cards are not so secure to use and will go out of use very soon B.insurance firms have to investigate before they confirm their policyholders claims C.lots of data are lost because of hardware problems D.online purchases are becoming more and more popular 33.Which of the following is the writers opinion about how to deal with the data flood? A.Companies should update their measures to guarantee their data safety . B.Organizations should keep their resulting grade of security checks unknown to the public. C.Personal information should be used for public information. D.The users should be given the right to access public information.34.From the passage we can couclude that_. A.the information flood is more useful to organizations than to individuals B.the data flood makes peoples life less convenient and more expensive C.compaines and insurance firms are responsible for the data flood D.the information flood has both positive and negative influence on modern life35.Whats the main idea of the passage ? A.Data flood is available in every field. B.The harms that data flood has brought to people are on the increase. C.Information flood is affecting peoples life. Ilived a casual life, without caring about the future. 36 Little did I realize that casualness would certainly lead to loss. Two years had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted FAIL inmore than half the subjects. I didnt care, at least not till my dad found out about it.You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expectedto finance their own education, my dad financed me. 37He lost his temperbut he just told me, Son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on. It hit me like a roundhouse kick (回旋踢) from Bruce Lee. I was jolted (震摇) out of my bones!I couldnt comprehend how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college. I owedeverybody money: the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, my friends, etc.38When I went back to college, I knew that if I dont change the way I live my life Iwont be able to pay everybody off. 39 I quit smoking, cut off from my friends who led me down the wrong road, starting hangingout in libraries and reading my engineering books. One year later, I went from a miserable failure to a magna cum laude (优等成绩). 40 This incident made me know that anything is possible if you take action and do something about it, however small or large. Even today it still motivates me when I feel that Im about to lose or give up. It reminds me that I can do it!A.Life was never the same again.B. I was living a life filled with credit.C. My own son, who basically grew up with his grandmother, the original _ guru(专家), has perfect table manners. This is partly because he was _ to manners at a very young age. However, when we eat at home, he would not _ manners. So I asked him why. He said, “ I behave the way I am supposed to _ when Im out, but when I am at home I want to be _.”Thats when I realized that most parents, myself include, do _ their children the proper way to behave outside the home, but they are also _ to believe that at home, anything goes.My _ to him was that good behavior had nothing to do with where you were or whom you were with. Then he answered, “but I behave _ when Im with others so that they think better of me.” And that is when I realized that I was doing things all _. I explained to hom that it had nothing to do with what people think. This _ him even more.So I went on to explain that behavior, whether in your everyday _ with people or at the dining table at home, is an _ of who you are. Well, at the age of 14,he got it.So basically, what Im saying is that teaching your children _ comes with the underlying lesson that it is not about _ to do or not to do, but rather, who they are. This way it is not _; it comes from within.Teach your teens or children the _ courtesy og greeting their friends parents and _ themselves when they go to someones home. Teach teenage boys to open the door of a car, or any door for that manner, for any girl, whether they are their girlfriends or not. This includes _ elevator doors or letting women step out of the elevator first.Just _ that teenage boys who practice good manners and courtesy grow up to become men who respect peo
