A VPLEX cluster can be a single, dual, or a quad engine size. Currently there are two hardware engine platforms in the VPLEX family which are VS6 and VS2. All engines in a VPLEX cluster must be of the same hardware platform, meaning all VS6 engines, or all VS2 engines. See table 1 & 2 for hardware platform informationVPLEX Local & VPLEX Metro: VPLEX also offers two different topology configurations for deployment which are VPLEX Local and VPLEX Metro. VPLEX Local supports storage arrays located in a single data center, and VPLEX Metro support arrays across data centers in synchronous replication distance. VPLEX Metro requires two VPLEX clusters of the same generation hardware platform, one at each side of the Metro data centers. The Metro interconnect technology can be Metro over IP, using MetroIP WAN Communication hardware module or Metro Fibre Channel, using Metro FC WAN Comm hardware module. We do not support VPLEX Metro of mixed generation deployment, using VS2 cluster on one site and VS6 at the other site. Please note that when ordering these products through MyQuotes, hardware and software, along with services for each cluster, you have to configure each cluster separately. For a VPLEX Metro order, you are required to do two separate iterations through the ordering path to configure both clusters.VPLEX Software Licensing for Dell EMC arrays: VPLEX offers many different licensing options to support different storage array types, including capacity based, frame based, or X-Brick based licensing options. See table 3 and SW licensing section for detailed information and upgrade rules. VPLEX SW Entitlement and Activation: Starting in Sep 2018, VPLEX SW ordering in MyQuotes generates SW quotes using models referencing the common Digital Licensing fulfillment processes. There is no impact to the sales and quoting procedures but customer actions are required to complete the SW activation as part of the product installation. Refer to section 2.6 VPLEX SW Entitlement & Activation for more detail. VPLEX for All Flash is a packaged option designed to simplify sales process to increase VPLEX with All Flash array (i.e. XtremIO/VMAX AF/UNITY AF) opportunities. It is a VPLEX hardware and software combined package with Dell EMC appliance based pricing, allowing unlimited capacity of All Flash arrays managed under VPLEX. VPLEX for All Flash is available for VS2 and VS6 platforms. We currently do not have a program to convert traditional VS2 upgrade to VPLEX for All Flash package. VPLEX for All Flash (VAF) is for new sales. We support the existing VS2 generational upgrade to a new VS6 for All Flash and allow the migration of the existing VPLEX licenses under VS2 to the new VS6 for All Flash, including non-All Flash frame based license options. See table 3 and SW licensing section for detailed information and upgrade rules. If the array is to be detached from one VPLEX cluster and re-deployed to a different VPLEX cluster, the license is also migrated with the array. - Frame license of Hybrid arrays can be migrated to VPLEX for All-Flash. - Capacity licenses are granted to the specific VPLEX cluster and stay with the VPLEX cluster. 1.2 Ordering VPLEX in MyQuotesVPLEX Landing Page in MyQuotes (Figure 1 below) provides the user with the option to choose between the two generations of solution: VS2: VPLEX VS2 Solution VS6: VPLEX VS6 SolutionPlease select “Add To Quote” option per figure 1 below to add to an existing VS2 or VS6 quote. Select “Add & Configure” to create a totally new VS2 or VS6 quote and configure whatever it may be. Then please follow the flow of the ordering path to perform: (a) Upgrade to Existing Solution, to expand or update VPLEX clusters already at a customer site or(b) New Solution, to order a new VPLEX cluster Figure 1 VPLEX Landing Page in MyQuotes 1.3 New Solution Hardware Ordering PathVPLEX ordering consists of Hardware, Software, and Services & Support. The following section uses an example of configuring a new VS6 cluster to illustrate the sequential ordering steps. Same sequential flow for hardware configuration can be applied to new VS2 solution as well as VS6 & VS2 for All-Flash new solution orders. After you select the desired generation of solution, assuming VS6 for this illustration, and select the “Add & Configure” option, you are presented with the following screen in MyQuotes as shown in figure 2, and figure 3. You are required to select the necessary options marked with an asterisk *, to complete a valid hardware configuration which includes the following: Here is the detailed description for each of the required options. A. Product Type Local Deployed for data mobility and high availability within a single data center Metro Deployed for data mobility and enhanced high availability between two sites within the synchronous distances. If Metro is selected, you also need to specify the Metro interconnect option. Please make the selection carefully because it is extremely difficult to convert in the field after installation.o Fibre Channelo Metro over IP MetroPoint Please note that MetroPoint is a feature that utilizes both VPLEX Metro and RecoverPoint combined to form the Operational Recovery (OR) and Disaster Recovery (DR) data protection for both Metro sites. More details on MetroPoint topology can be found /docs/DOC-105499B. In general, if customer plans to purchase new All-Flash storage arrays from Dell EMC, please promote VPLEX for All-Flash option. If customer plans to migrate their existing arrays attached to VPLEX VS2 cluster to a new VS6 cluster, then you need to take into consideration of the following: - If the existing arrays attached to VS2 are under capacity licensing, you need to purchase new SW capacity under VS6 license option because capacity license is VPLEX cluster based. - If the existing arrays attached to VS2 are under frame or X-brick based licensing, then there is no new licensing required under VS6 because frame or X-Brick licensing stay with the array frame or brick.Use table 3 in section 1.1 for a summary of the SW licensing options. Refer to the “Software Licensing Options” section for detailed description of each option and the associated rules pertinent to upgrade. Figure 4 VPLEX SW Tab for Frame licensing optionsContinuing the example from the previous section of a new VS6 hardware order, you are required to address the Software options to complete the ordering process. VPLEX GeoSynchrony License for VPLEX Base Operating environment that allows storage virtualization, N+1 Clustering and NDU Upgrades. VPLEX GeoSynchrony software license is included in new VPLEX cluster purchase and by default, a 10TB capacity license for VPLEX Local is part of it. The eLicensing Entitlement and Activation procedure handles the granting of the default SW license accordingly. We also bundle Storage Monitoring and Reporting (M&R) for VPLEX with every new VPLEX cluster purchase. Figure 5 VPLEX SW Tab, Local configuration 1.5 Hardware Upgrade Options In the VS6 solution path, you select the “Upgrade to existing Solution” option in MyQuotes as shown in Figure 6-a. For VS2, please follow the same workflow in the VS2 solution ordering path for upgrade. Please specify if the upgrade is to “Upgrade an existing VS6 solution” or to order the “Generational Upgrade to VS6”. For the latter option, please refer to section 3 in this document for information on why and how to order the VS2 to VS6 Generational Upgrade (GenU) kit(s). In this section, we explain the steps involved in upgrade to existing VS6 ordering options. See Figure 6-a, 6-b, and 6-c screen captures for visual aide. The workflow requires you to provide the following current configuration first in order to see the upgrade options in the GUI screen. - Current cluster type: Local / Metro - How is current cluster racked: EMC Rack / Customer Supplied Rack - What is the current cluster configuration: Single Engine / Dual Engine / Quad EngineUpon completing the answers to the current configuration, you will be prompted with - Check to increase number of engine: Yes / No By selecting “Yes” to increase number of engine, you are presented with the question of- What is your desired VPLEX cluster configuration? If the current configuration is “Single Engine”, you will be presented with the upgrade option of “Dual Engine” only. If the current configuration is “Dual Engine”, you will be presented with the upgrade option of “Quad Engine” only. For upgrade to “Quad Engine”, we also require an additional country specific power cord selection if the VS6 is configured with Dell EMC rack as illustrated in Figure 6-c. Note: We do not support VS2 with Dual Engine in customer rack configuration upgrade to Quad Engine configuration. This option does not exist in MyQuotes VS2 ordering path. VS6 hardware upgrade scenarios include: - Add engine to the existing cluster: We support single to dual upgrade and dual to quad upgrade in the factory rack or field deploy configuration. We support engine expansion for VPLEX Local or VPLEX Metro configuration. - Convert deployment topology from Local to Metro upgrade: This implies the order is for the WAN Communication modules to be installed in customers existing VPLEX Local cluster, requiring the specification of Metro FC or Metro IP. Figure 6-a: VS6 hardware upgrade Figure 6-b: VS6 hardware upgrade frome Single engine to Dual EngineFigure 6-c: VS6 hardware upgrade from Dual engine to Quad Engine If the current cluster configuration is already a Metro, the workflow above applies to upgrade ordering with the provision of the current Metro interconnect type: Metro FC, or Metro over IP. The upgrade logic takes into consideration of including the associated WAN Comm modules for Metro engine upgrade. Convert deployment topology from Local to Metro upgrade: In the Upgrade ordering path you follow the Hardware tab questions by specifying current cluster configuration. At the bottom of the page, you see a question “Click to upgrade cluster from Local to Metro” and also the required selection of “Metro Interconnect Type”. Please select the correct option with confirmation from your customer because the work involved in correcting the Metro interconnect type from FC to IP or vice versa in a Sales Order (SO) is a manual operation and a very costly process. Swapping WAN Com modules is highly discouraged. Please create the order and configuration correctly starting with the quoting process. See Figure 7 and Figure8 for Upgrade Local to Metro configuration workflow in MyQuotes for VS6 and VS2 respectively. Figure 7: Upgrade VS6 Local cluster configuration to Metro cluster.
