专题限时训练(三十二)阅读填空(二)(限时:25分钟)6(一)new research from byu (brigham young university) shows that dads are in a unique position to help their adolescent children develop persistence.byu professors laura padillawalker and randal day arrived at the finding after following 325 families over several years.“in our research we ask can your child stick with a task? can they finish a project? can they make a goal and complete it? ” day said.“learning to stick with it sets a foundation for kids to grow and to deal with the stress and pressures of life.”the scholars from byus school of family life reported their findings on june 15, 2012 in the journal of early adolescence.“there are relatively few studies that highlight(突出) the unique role of fathers,” padillawalker said.“this research also helps to establish that qualities such as persistencewhich can be taughtare the key to a childs life success.”the key is for dads to practice whats called “authoritative(权威性的)” parenting, which consists of three basic ingredients.they are as follows: children feel warmth and love from their father; the responsibilities and the reasons behind rules are emphasized, and children are given an appropriate level of autonomy(自治)about 52% of the dads in the study exhibited aboveaverage levels of authoritative parenting.over time, their kids were significantly more likely to develop persistence, which led to better outcomes in school and lower levels of bad behaviors.this particular study examined 11to 14yearolds living in twoparent homes.yet the study authors suggest that single parents still may play a role in teaching the benefits of persistence.“fathers should continue to try and be involved in their childrens lives and engage in high quality interactions, even if the quantity of those interactions might be lower than its desirable,” padillawalker said.titlea study on fathers 1._ in educating children2._laura padillawalker and randal day from byuworkexamining the children of 1114 experience new things along with making a difference in the place you visit and in the lives of the people you meet.often, people choose voluntourism to use their skills for a worthy cause rather than the usual monetary gain.there are many benefits of voluntourism.from the individual point of view, voluntourism can make the tourists learn a large number of new things, get an opportunity to use skills for sustained(持续的) services, and get the satisfaction of making a difference in other peoples lives.from the local communitys point of view, many types of productive services are received; there is an increase in tourist income and also crosscultural understanding and mutual(相互的) respect are promoted.in addition, the local people see better living conditions and are inspired.to increase the effectiveness of voluntourism, a person will have to make preparations for it.the first stage of going on a voluntour is knowing why you want to be a voluntourist and then finding a volunteer that will meet your requirements.keep in mind that the place you would be going to, is where real people with real needs and real emotions live.your services are going to impact not only their present, but possibly even their future.a thorough research on the organization and its project is a must.for this, get in contact with people who have gone on volunteers before.your services as a volunteer should be beneficial, not harmful, for the local people.so make a list of things you would want to do on a volunteer.in summary, having an open mind, learners attitude, and a team spirit will go a long way in an organized way before they start kindergarten.most of all, its important that children learn to communicate without hesitation at an early age.make them understand that hitting, yelling, crying, and throwing things at others will only make things more difficult.they should learn to play with other kids, share, and take turns while being polite.by telling them youre proud of the things theyve done right, you can improve their selfrespect and confidence.besides the above basic skills, you also should develop their academic skills.children love to learn, and you can use this to make them learn alphabets and numbers.start by teaching them the alphabet song, which is easy to memorize and is catchy.use the bedtime stories as a foundation to teach them how alphabets form words.colors and basic shapes are other two things they should learn before heading to kindergarten.also you need to make your kids learn to take care of themselves.start early and whatever your child does, let him do it without much direction or constantly having to scold him whenever he does something wrong.rather than babying the child, let your child play in a group unsupervised, but sometimes you need to keep a secret watch.the most important aspect children should know as early as possible is the difference between right and wrong.before kindergarten, not only should your children learn to know the difference between whats right and whats not, they should also learn to recognize and respect authority.what your children are likely to come across in school should be taught early in playgroups.this will guide them in kindergarten.(四)a new book by an economics professor at the university of texasaustin reveals what the world of advertising has known for decadesthat beauty sells.daniel s hamermesh also shows attractive payswith goodlooking employees enjoying more perks(小费) and higher pay packets(工资袋) than their plainer colleagues.professor hamermesh has studied what he refers to as the economics of beauty for about 20 years.in his book beauty pays, published by princeton university press, he claims goodlooking people enjoyed perks beyond their paysuch as party invites, business travel and office privilegeswhile less attractive workers are overlooked and can often be victims of discrimination.attractive people are more likely to be happier, earn more money, get a bank loan (with a lower interest rate) and marry equally goodlooking partners.as a result, attractive employees are more productive, leading to higher sales and potentially higher profit for themselves or the company they work for.less cut and dried is what makes up attractiveness.far from being merely in the eye of the beholder, professor hamermesh points to a few subconscious(潜意识的) factorssuch as the symmetry(对称) of the face, facial expressions and popularity factors (if the person looks like someone popular or famous)in his book, professor hamermesh estimated that attractive people earned on average about 145,000 more in a lifetime than those with belowaverage looks.a beautiful woman would earn four percent more, and handsome men three percent more, than their plain counterparts.when the professors research became widely known in the early 1990s, he came in for some criticismnamely from comedian jay leno, who asked why someone like dallas businessman and presidential candidate ross perot earned more than someone like actor rob lowe?but professor hamermesh brushed this off, being quoted in the sydney morning herald as saying: “we dont talk about individuals; we talk about the average goodlooking person and the average badlooking person.there are always special individuals.”of course education and work experience were important factors in earnings, but professor hamermesh said his new book, based on his research, showed that a persons looks were impossible to ignore.title: 1._.in generalgoodlooking workers are gaining more tips and 2._ than their plainer
