thats guaranteed to entertain the entire family.with some terrific computer-generated effects, a great cast and a fun-packed storyline, robots is the best animated film (动画片) since the incredibles. yep, it really is that good.set in a world populated by robots, ewan mcgregor plays rodney copperbottom, a young robot who leaves his small-town home to pursue his dream of becoming an inventor.but after arriving in robot city, his hopes of getting a job at bigweld industries are destroyed when he learns the firm has been taken over by the evil ratchet (greg kinnear).egged on by his controlling mum, madame gasket (jim broadbent), ratchet plans to reduce half of robot citys citizens to scrap metal by refusing to sell the spare parts they need to survive.instead, he wants to make a fortune selling expensive upgrades that few can afford. as he says, “why be you when you can be new?”aided by a few misfit robots known as the rustlesincluding robin williams as the cowardly (胆小的)fender (“im made of a metal called afraidium”)rodney must track down the firms founder, bigweld (mel brooks), and convince him to save the city from ratchets plans.the first thing thatll strike you about the movie is the thought thats gone into creating robot city. its a wondrous world full of mechanical marvels including wind-up cars and walking streetlamps.also terrific are the special effects. this might be an animated movie but at times youll catch yourself thinking its really a live-action film.of course, there have been plenty of animated movies that looked the part but were let down by a weak storyline (see shark tale, for example).but robots grips (扣人心弦) right from the start thanks to a heart-warming and thoroughly engaging plot that never bores.my only complaints are with williams who, as usual, has a one-in-10 success rate with his jokes. also a letdown is a romantic subplot between rodney and a shapely robot called cappy (halle berry) that doesnt go anywhere.complains aside, this is a mechanical marvel thatll have you bolted firmly to your seat.best quote(引述): fender: “even though you had a discouraging day, just remember theres another one coming tomorrow.”best bit: check out those amazing images.worst bit: robin williams, character does an unfunny britney spears dance routine.if you likedice age, the incredibles, toy story. youll like this.【小题1】this piece of writing is a _.a. commercial advertisementb. film reviewc. movie posterd. literary essay【小题2】 the cast of robots is made up of all the following actors or actresses except _.a. ewan mcgregorb. robin williamsc. britney spearsd. halle berry【小题3】what is shark tale an example of?a. a great cast.b. a poor plot.c. special effects.d. clumsy animation.b.these young men were a different kind of prisoner from those we had seen before. they-were brave, hostile(怀敌意的)and1_ they would not take orders, and shoutedamandla!”at every opportunity. their instinct was to confront(对抗)rather than cooperate. the authorities did not know how to handle them, and they turned the island upside down. during the rivonia trial, i remarked to a security policeman that if the government did not reform itself, the freedom fighters who would take our placewould some-day make theauthorities miss us. that day had indeed come on robben island. in these young men we saw the angry revolutionary spirit of the times. i had had some warning. on a visit with winnie a few months before, she had managed to tell me through our coded conversation that there was a rising class of discontented youths who were violent and africanist in beliefs. she said they were changing the nature of the struggle and that i should be aware of them. the new prisoners were shocked by what they considered the inhuman conditions of the island, and said that they could not understand how we could live in such a way. we told them that they should have seen the island in 1964. but they were almost as sceptical of us as they were of the authorities. they chose to ignore our calls for discipline and thought our advice weak and unassertive(不果断) it was obvious that they regarded us, the rivonia trialists,as moderates(温和派)after so many years of being branded a radical(激进的)revolutionary, to be seen as a moderate was a novel and not altogether pleasant feeling. i knew that i could react in one of two ways:i could scold them for their disrespect or i could listen to what they were saying. i chose the latter. then some of these men, such as strini moodley of the south african students organization and saths cooper of the black peoples convention, came into our section, i _2_ shortly after their arrival on the island, the commanding officer came and asked me as a favour to address the young men. he wanted me to tell them to behave themselves, to recognize the fact that they were in prison and to accept the discipline of prison lifei told him that i was not prepared to do that. under the circumstances, they would have regarded me as a follower ofthe authorities. a. conditions of the prison were far more unsatisfactory in 1964. b officers of the prison turned the island upside down to discipline the young men. c. the rivonia trialists felt honored to be regarded as moderates. d. the young men regarded the author as a follower of the authorities.【小题5】several phrases have been underlined and numbered in the passage; which two of them actually refer to the same people? a. b. c. d.cextra? extra!gasoline hits four dollars a gallon!” no one will really be shocked一except, perhaps, the old-timers who tell about the goodold days when gas was three gallons for a dollar, and people drove around just for the fun of it.as a matter of fact; the price of gas has been rising fast and steadily for several years, and manyadjustments have already been made. there was, for a time, considerable unemployment in the auto industry, and three quartersof the garages and service stations have gone out of business. however; the bicycle andmotor-scooter business has flourished(兴旺); and many people have found employment there:now that federal motors has brought out its new lilliput, which travels forty miles on a gallon, the auto business is picking up again. the factories that havent switched over to two-wheeltransportation are working on their new smaller models. there is talk, too, about bringing outnew steam and electric automobiles that will be just as economical as the old cars. in the meantime, streetcars are gradually replacing buses all over the country because of thegreater economy of electric power. and many people who have seldom used publictransportation are now riding the streetcars while their automobiles rust(生锈)in their garages.theres no market at all for their big, luxurious cars, for only the wealthy can now afford tooperate them. many people are now shopping in their own neighborhood, and small businessesare thriving. ministers, educators, and editorial writers are pointing out that there has been a greatimprovement in family life. families now stay at home more for their fun, and children andparents are becoming better acquainted. the stores report a booming business in parlor games, hobby materials, books, musical instruments and albums. people have lost their pale indoor look. the revival of the lost art of walking has brought ahealthy pink back to many a cheek. this return to the heels has revolutionized the clothing styles;people now need to be ready for all kinds of weather: these conditions, however, may not last. already our clever chemists are at work on newsynthetic fuels which, they say, will put us right back where we were一on wheels. shall w ewish them success or not?【小题1】which of the following is not a result of the gas price rising? a. more people prefer to travel on public transportation which costs less than driving cars. b. people return to the traditional exercise of walking, which helps them to look healthier. c. people shop in nearby stores without having to drive, so small businesses are declining. d. the auto industry has been forced to develop new models which are more economical.【小题2】the purpose of writing this passage is a. to show the chain reaction of the rising gas price b. to discuss whether its necessary to work on new fuels c. to warn people not to use too much gasoline d. to picture what life will be like if gas runs out【小题3】what is the best title for this passage? a. new fuels on the way b. cars or bicycles, that is a question c. end of the good old days d. from wheels to heelsdrecently, an almost literal case of lifeboat ethics(伦理) occurred. on aug. 4, graham and sheryl anley, while boating off the coast of south africa, hit a rock. as the boat threatened to sink the husband got off, but his wife was trapped in the boat. instead of freeing his wife and getting her to shore, graham grabbed rosie, their pet dog. with rosie safe and sound, graham returned for sheryl. all are doing fine.its a great story, but it doesnt strike me as especially newsworthy. news is supposed to be about something fairly unique, and recent research suggests that, in the right circumstances, lots of people also would have grabbed their rosie first.we have strange relationships with our pets. we lavish our pets with adoration and better health care than billions of people receive. we speak to pets with the same high-pitched voices that we use for babies. as an extreme example of our feelings about pets, the nazis had strict laws that guaranteed the humane treatment of the pets of jews being shipped to death camps.a recent paper by george regents university demonstrates this human involvement with pets to an astonishing extent. participants in the study were told a situation in which a bus is out of control, bearing down on a dog and a human. which do you save? with responses from more than 500 people, the answer was that it depended: what kind of human and what kind of dog?everyone would save a brother, grandparent or close friend rather than a strange dog. but when people considered their own dog versus people less connected with thema distant cousin or a hometown strangervotes in favor of saving the dog came rolling in. and an astonishing 40% of respondents, including 46% of women, voted to save their dog over a foreign tourist. what does a finding like this me
