Conclusion15Bibliography17Acknowledgements18摘 要英语电影在大学英语教学中的运用越来越普遍。电影台词是影片最重要的部分之一,其优点得到广泛认可。本文拟从英语口语的重要性和大学英语口语教学现状谈起,然后指出英文电影经典台词的特点及其优越性;进一步探讨英语经典台词在大学英语口语中的运用方式; 接着强调英文影片应该遵循的原则;最后得出结论: 英语电影学习法是一种有效的学习方式,对改进大学英语口语教学和提高大学生英语水平和交际能力有着重要意义和实际作用。关键词:经典台词;大学英语;英语口语;运用 Abstract English movies have gained popularity in college English teaching. The actor lines are one of the most important parts of films and the advantages have been widely recognized. This paper will start with the significance of oral English and the present situation of college oral English teaching; then point out the features of classical English lines and discuss the advantages of classical English lines in college oral English teaching; it will further suggest the ways of applying classical English lines to oral English teaching and shift to the emphasis on the principles of choosing movies. Finally, this paper will come to the conclusion that movie learning method is effective, and it can help improve college oral English teaching and help the students to develop their English comprehension and communicative competence. Introduction With the rapid development of international cooperation and communication in the 21st century, English has become increasingly significant as a globe language. More and more attention was paid to English teaching, especially oral English teaching in college. Thus, more efforts have been made to enhance language abilities of college students than ever before. To improve oral English of college students and find new methods to urgent right now. However, Chinas English teaching has always focuses on imparting knowledge, making knowledge of the learner ample reserves, but the skills are lagging behind. In order to truly improve the speaking ability and to develop communicative competence in English without make the students feel boring, monotonous, learning oral English from movies is an effective way. According to Westrad (111), the actor line is one of the most important parts of movies. At the beginning, the author mentions that the classical English lines have topical features, such as brief, easy to understand, vivid, and humors, etc. taking the film The Wizard of OZ, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Lion in Winter etc. as examples. In the second part, the author shifts his core to the cultural meanings in the movies. He also uses different movies to explain his opinion; the meaning of Brave Heart is protecting freedom, of Forrest Gump is living in happy life, of Saving Private Ryan is treasuring ones life. Many educators in China begin to functions of English movie in English class, and the importance of the effectiveness of this means and method to be taken into practice, which can stimulate the students motivation to gain their attention and interest during the process of watching and learning. Besides, students will benefit a lot from watching movies, like memorizing language points with less time and acquiring the linguistic knowledge and cultural background in a more relaxed way. The Advantages of Applying the Classical English Movie Lines to College Oral English Teaching The movie, a popular art with both artistic and commercial values, is one of the most influential mass media. Movie looks like a piece of mirror, which reflects all the respects of human society, including the material world and the spiritual world as well. “Movie is so important that it has become the first arts of the human world,” pointed out by French artist and novelist Mona (Baker 40). With the increase in cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world, especially with the Western countries, the movie has gradually stood out as one of the important medium of communication in its own right. The English movies are both teachers and students favorite, because of its classical lines, and applying them to college oral English teaching is no doubt a smart choice.2.1 Creating a True English-spoken EnvironmentEnglish movies provide a good learning environment for college English students. We are all known that using language must be in the special condition. Because of the limitation of environment and condition, the teacher has to design a special condition in the classroom. Speaking by watching pictures is a better way for English movies are usually considered to be the true reflection of our life. Exposed the students into this “true English spoken environment” and feel the same feelings with the actors so as to experience its plots and culture characters that the English movies have provided to us. Practicing its classic lines by listening, speaking and imitating, can put the learners totally in its own language environment. Take some English movies as examples, Friends, an American TV series show, whose plots are all taken from daily spoken English, with a dialogue of simple, humor, vivid and accurate. We are sure that it can benefit students a lot. There is a brilliant court debate and wonderful negotiations in the classic movie JFK and God Father, which can let the students to appreciate the charm of the classic lines of the movie. In Love Story, we can hear dialogues of meeting for the first time. Plots of go shopping in You Have Got Mail and office gossips in Sleepless in Seattle. The classic movies always have classical lines and beautiful background music which would put students into splendid scene and environment. 2.2 Improving the English AbilitiesAs we all know, English movies provide a good learning environment for college English learners. However, some students may still feel shy of speaking English when there is no one talking with them or no an English speaking environment. That is to say if they speak English with someone, friends or other classmates will make fun of them. As influenced by Chinese culture, plenty of students are not willing to express them when face others. And according to the traditional way of Chinese thinking, everyone should be modest. This condition can be bettered if we take English movies into our oral English class and advocating it extensively to every student. If the students want to speak English well, they have to through the process of listening, imitation, analyzing and so on before they can speak English out naturally and fluently. Also, they are forced to speak English in or out of class, and talk about the topics that movies have offered to them, they would be happy to speak in English. In addiction, it would stimulate the students learning motivation and improve their oral English speaking and listening. Choose those movies like Friends, Prison Break, Desperate Housewives and Revenge and Vampire Diary would enlarge oral English vocabulary and hence the ability of English listening and speaking of the students. By imitating the lines would help them to cultivate a standard pronunciation. Listening and speaking are two important ways to learn a language, they are also the most natural and efficient ways. By repeatedly listening and speaking, students can enlarge vocabulary, grasp the commonly used oral English sentences patterns, and can imperceptibly train students language sense, and sense different stress, rhythm, pitch, pause, speed which carries enormous amount of information. 2.3 Improving Cross-culture Communication CompetenceLanguage is a reflection of the differences because the culture, customs, traditions and national thinking are varied from one country to another. To correctly understanding and using a language, one must learn both the language and culture combine with language teaching and culture introducing together. Cultural differences will largely reflected in a film, like the Blind Side, Big Fish are all films with distinctive culture connotation. English movies like that can help students have a better understanding of the western culture, the daily life of the westerners and their thinking mode etc. Only when one understands western culture and experience the culture in the position of the role can him thinking in western mode and mater the knowledge of cross-culture communication. (Whatton, 64) Remember and aftertaste some classic English movie lines can strengthen the learners understanding and stimulate their motive of communication. We can not truly understand the details of the movie Titanic of the dialogue:Molly: Hey, who thought of the name Titanic? Thus, interest is very important in learning. Once study-interest formed, students will have a strong thirst for knowledge, become very active in study. Psychological research results show that: People will remember the things they are interested, and forget what they are not interested. Besides, the America linguist Krashen has expressed his opinion in his article Effective Filter Hypothesis (16) that learning motivation, learning attitude, self-confident and emotional factors plays a special filterative role when approaching the language input. This filterative effect will be small and one will be get more language input if the learners with a strong learning motivation high confidence. Movie is a comprehensive art, integrating the voice and vivid visual images together, so it can fully arouse students hear and sight. The effect of learning can be very good if the students have the will to watch the appropriate English movies. Specifically, through the Waterloo Bridge, students can understand young peoples view towards love in that background and situation that is what they are interested in. When seeing some classic plots or hearing some beautiful lines of a dialogue or appreciate some sweet English songs in the movie, students would like to express their feelings and thoughts with others through imitation, group discussion, role play, and other ways to communicate with each other, thus, the classroom atmosphere become active. Moreover, students participate in teaching activities including three parts: thinking participates, emotional participate, behavior participate. The movies can provide students with splendid teaching contents and vivid class atmosphere which can encourage the students who are silence and participate in the activities in class. This proves that the English movie is a very effective medium for language teaching, especially in oral English teaching, that is also one of the assisted functions of the English movies. Whats more, it could let students acquaint themselves with American and British culture, broaden their knowledge. For example, the Ten Commandments can help the learners understand western religious culture, Glory and Gone with the Wind brought us to the American civil war, from Nixon and Thirty Days we can learned Americas political life during the cold war, from Jane Eyre and Never Give Up, we knew that women should be strong and independent. We can learn the westerners traditional weddings and other traditions from English movies. Whats more, there are many beautiful sentences and good philosophies in the movie, such as the classic lines in Forrest Gump: Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get. Stupid is as stupid does. Miracles happen everyday. Death is just a part of life, something we are all destined to do, etc.2.5 Introducing various Topics for Spoken EnglishDue to these advantages, movies have become more and more popular with English learners. And the movies always show us some of the focus of the society, the fashion, etc. So English movies widen our see sight in some way, and after some practice, you may find you can speak much better than before, and you may also find that you have much more topics to talk about. We know that oral English teaching should process step by step according to the topic, while the teacher can also use fragments of the dialogue in a related movie. By doing this can not only attract the students interest but also deepen their opinions. Using the classical English movie lines to give students a free talk or debate will soon lead students to class. For example, if teacher wants to introduce this topic: fear and courage, he or she can introduce these lines in War Photographer: Fear is not what is important; it is how you deal with it. It would be like asking a marathon runner if they feel pain. It is not a matter of whether you feel it; it is how you manage it. We would use some theme songs of the movies to introduce the topic. The teacher can choose MY Heart Will Go On to introduce the topic Titanic. It is sure that most of the students are familiar with this song and it becomes easier for them to accept the new topic.2.6 Learning the Native English During oral communication, speakers need standard pronunciation and intonation, as well as the suitable use of language for the occasion. There are numerous examples that we could cite of expressions that are correct according to grammatical rules, but unsuitable for the occasion. The learners would meet some difficult points which can be hard to express. Thus, teachers should choose some parts of the movie with affluent oral expression and give them a detail explanation to help to understand, or help the learners to sum up its usages in view of different conversation situations. Imitating those classical English movie lines is more vivid than teachers boring lecture and it deepens the educational meaning to students. Whats more, when making a conversation, teacher should lead the students to think about what they want to express or what the correct meaning is? In this period, let students try to use the most native express with a similar meaning as much as possible.
