文档简介

Critical Content/Concept WebUnit OverviewChildren are natural builders and designers. This unit combines a childs natural interest in the building and designing with the science of motion. During this unit students will analyze the motion of vehicles they have built, investigate how forces affect a vehicles motion, and design vehicles that are propelled by stored energy. The units conclusion and final assessment involves student created vehicles designed with safety in mind.Suggested Time Frame6-8 weeksSubject: Science_Physical ScienceUnit Theme:Force and MotionConceptual Lens:4thGrade: Suggested Unit Resources & Activities: STC KIT: Motion & DesignFor a complete list, please refer to the “Suggested Unit Resources & Activities” pages at the end of this unit.Science Grade 4District Reporting TopicsReporting Topic 1: Experimental DesignReporting Topic 2: Data CollectionReporting Topic 3: Data AnalysisAnalytical ThinkingAR1: Comparing and ContrastingAN7: InferringAN8: OutliningOrganizational ThinkingOR5: Decision-making techniquesUnit Topic: Physical Science/ Force and MotionCritical ThinkingCR6: Judging ObservationsCR7: Deciding on an ActionCreative ThinkingCV4: SynthesizingPossible Reporting TopicsRT 1: Experimental DesignThere is a formal process called the Scientific Method used to conduct any experiment or investigation. Following the Scientific Method ensures valid results and that others can replicate the experiment to confirm the results. Science also has a formal method of classifying all living and nonliving things. Performance Standards:1. State the problem or question2. Form a testable hypothesis3. Design an experiment4. List the steps to followRT 2: Data CollectionFollow the Scientific Method to conduct an experiment/investigation1. Select and use the appropriate tools (instruments) to collect data2. Record and graph the dataRT 3: Data AnalysisFollow the Scientific Method to analyze data, draw conclusions and report out on the experiment/investigation.1. Use the data and graph to describe what happened during the experiment2. Explain what happened during the experiment based on the data3. Make a prediction of what would happen if one of the parameters of the experiment were changed and defend it4. Create a lab report following the Scientific Method FormatSubject: ScienceGrade: 4Unit : Physical ScienceLens: Force & MotionEnduring UnderstandingsGuiding QuestionsEU1. Technology is a means by which people use knowledge, tools, and systems to make their lives easier and better.EU2. Models can be used to explain and/or communicate how things work.EU3. An object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion remains in motion, unless acted on by a force.EU4. When a force acts on an object, the object will start to move, speed up, slow down, or change direction in direct proportion to the magnitude of the force and inversely proportional to the mass of the object.EU5. If an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first object.EU6. A force is any push or pull on an object.EU7. A force can change the speed of an object.EU8. Friction is a force that occurs when two surfaces rub together.EU9. Friction opposes motion.EU10. Stored energy, when released, creates movement. How is technology used to make our lives easier and better? How can a model explain or communicate how things work? What is force? Are some forces natural? Can force be man-made? How do unbalanced forces work together? How do engineers use unbalanced forces in the design of a vehicle? What is mass and how is it different than weight? Can mass and/or weight affect the movement of a vehicle? How do engineers use mass and weight when designing vehicles? How does friction affect the movement of a vehicle? How do engineers use friction when designing vehicles? How are wasteful and useful friction defined? How does air resistance affect the movement of a vehicle? Can drag reduce or enhance the movement of a vehicle? How do engineers design vehicles to reduce air resistance and drag? How is energy different than force? What are the sources of energy? How is potential energy created? How is kinetic energy released and transformed?Subject: ScienceGrade: 4Unit: Physical ScienceLens: Force and MotionAC = Assessment Code:P Prompts R-Rubric V-Video Critical Content & SkillsO Observation WS Work Samples PO-PortfolioPR-Products SA Student Self-Assessment T Tests Students will know:ACStudents will be able toACBlueprints are used to direct the construction of 3-dimensional objectsDraw and make models using blueprintsDesign requirements determine the design, construction and testing of vehiclesDesign, build and test vehicles to meet design requirementsObjects move in unique pathsObserve how an object movesForces change and objects movement through spaceDescribe a vehicles motion and changes in motionA stop watch can be used to record one aspect of an objects movement Measure using a stop watchData can be collected and recorded Collect and record dataData can be analyzed to determine representative valuesAnalyze data to determine representative valuesThe effect of an applied force can be predictedPredict the effect on an applied forceDesign problems can be solved through experimentationSolve design problemsTest results can be communicated in a variety of waysCommunicate test results Unit: Force & Motion Grade: 4Suggested Activities:EnduringUnderstandingsWhere is this unit located?1.
