japanese automobile standard jaso m 33486 grade o, exterior decoration film for automobiles applicable (reference) engine hood, etc. classification by applying area part films that are attached to the outside of the body or exterior parts, and are exposed to high loads of light and heat films that are attached to the outside of the body or exterior parts, and are exposed to a high load of light but a slightly lower load of heat films that are attached to the outside of the body or exterior parts, and are exposed to slightly lower loads of liaht and heat etc. roof, trunk, etc. sides, section fenders, 1. scope this standard specifies the quality of decoration films (l) that are used for the exterior of automobiles except motorcycles. note (i): decoration films refer to such films that are colored or printed on the front surface, or that are colored throughout, and that have an adhesive applied to the back from which the release paper may be removed or applying the film to parts. remark: in this standard, units and numerical values are based on si (international system of units). while units and numerical values given in are customary units system, and are given for reference. 2. purpose this standard aims to secure the proper quality of ex- terior decoration films and standardize procedures. 3 . definitions the definitions of the main terms used in are as follows: (1) base material their testing this standard the basic constituent material of decoration films which can be printed on the front surface and be coated with an adhesive on the back. (polyvinyl chloride film, polyester film, etc.) an adhesive coating the back of the base material for easy attaching of the film to parts, etc. by apply i ng pressure. (pressu re-sensitive adhesive, etc.) (2) adhesives applicable standards: jis d 0202 jis d 0205 jis k 2201 jis k 2204 jis k 2215 jis k 2219 jis k 2234 jis k 5400 jis k 8576 jis k 8951 jis l 0803 jis l 0823 jis 2 1522 jis z 8703 jaso m 324 (3) release paper a sheet of paper coated with silicone resin or the like which prevents the adhesive coated face from adhering and can be easily removed. a plastic blade used when applying film. (4) shall retain an adhesive strength of 12 n/25 mm 1.2 kgf/25 mm or more after the test. this does not apply t o weathering. o o 8.4 8.5 o (3) o (3) 8.6 8.7 o (5) o (5) o o o o 8.8 salt spray resistance o o 8.9 protective wax resistance o o 8.10 the base material and its front surface shall be free of partial missing or unclear print, uneven color or aloss, deformation, wrinkles, swelling, separation, cracks, serious damage, or other defects harmful to use. o o 8.1 1 wax remover resistance abrasion resistance o shall be free of abrasion reaching the film base material (aoulies to the minted laver). 8.12 1 acid resistance o al ka1 i resistance engine oil resistance gear oil resistance 8.13 windshield washer liauid resistance antifreeze fluid resistance detergent resistance gas oil resistance gasoline resistance o o 8.14 8.1 5 impact resistance adhesion dimensional stability notes:() a t 80+2oc (3) a t 7o+z0c (4) 5cycles () 3 cycles o o o o u ibnormal ities. the adhesion of film t o its object, or to clear ink, ,hall be 100/100. o 8.16 o o 8.1 7 o 3irnensional changes shall be less than 10.5%. rhere shall be no excess adhesive from film edges. 2 -,-,- jas0 m 334-86 6. construction and applying methods decoration films shall be such that the base material (polyvinyl chloride film, polyester film, or the like) is directly colored or its front surface printed, and be applied to automobiles with an adhesive (pressure- sensitive adhesive). 7. general test conditions 7.1 test room standard conditions tcst place standard conditions shall, in principle, be 23oc with a tolerance of temperature grade 2 (21c to 25oc) and 65% in humidity with a tolerance of humi- dity grade 5 (60% to 70%) as specified in jis z 8703 (standard atmospheric conditions for testing). test performance sheets shall be filled out with the date, temperature, and humidity. 7.2 test piece adjustment unless otherwise specified, test pieces shall be such as have been attached to objects in the actual method of use. painted panels or materials prepared as agreed be- tween the parties concerned shall be degreased and washing, after which test pieces shall be attached there- to under pressure using a rubber roller or a plastic squeegee. each test shall be conducted after leaving the test pieces for 48 hours under the standard conditions specified in 7.1 following their adhesion to the objects. 7.3 number of test pieces the number of test pieces shall, in principle, be 3 or more. 8. testing methods 8.1 appearance test appearance shall be visually checked under a standard light source or light from a north window for partial missing or unclear print, uneven color or gloss, separa- tion, serious damage, or the like against the limit samples that are agreed upon between the parties con- cerned. 8.2 shelf stability test equipment (a) air circulation type gear oven (b) scale (measuring down to 0.1 mm) (c) sheet glass test piece release paper attached. size: 270 x 270 mm (3) testing procedure (a) draw reference lines 10 mm inward from the lengthwise and sidewise edges of the test pieces, and measure the initial refer- ence line intervals. (b) place the sheet glass horizontally in the gear oven, and set it to 80+2oc. (cl place the test pieces, with the release paper side down, on the sheet glass, and leave them for 24 hours. (d) after cooling to room temperature, meas- ure the reference line intervals, and check for edge peeling and release paper peeling. (a) record edge peeling and separation paper peeling, if any. (b) calculate the dimensional change in length- wise and sidewise directions by the follow- ing equation. (4) test result recording dimensional change (%) = - -lo x i 0 0 l 0 where lo: initial reference line interval (mm) ii : measurement after the test (mm) 8.3 adhesive strength test (1) preparing test pieces regard the flow direction of film as longitudi- nal, and prepare test pieces measuring 25 mm wide and 250 mm long (longitudinal). adhere the test pieces 100 mm long as specified. 48 hours after adhering, bend the end back 180 degrees, clamp the end of a test piece with an instron type tension tester, pull it off at a pul- ling speed of 300+20 mm/minute, and take the load at that time as adhesive strength. measure adhesive strength, average the maximum and minimum values, and disregard the first and last 20 mm. (2) testing procedure 8.4 weatherability tests 8.4.1 accelerated test method a (sunshine carbon arc lamp test) (1) equipment sunshine carbon weather meter (as specified in jis d 0205 (general rules of weatherability for automobile parts) (2) testing method conduct the test under the operating condi- tions specified in table 4, exposing the test pieces for the specified time. after removing, leave the test pieces at room temperature to let them dry, and visually check the test pieces for 3 -,-,- jas0 m 334-86 6353oc black panel temperature discoloration, color fading, partial missing or unclear print, uneven color or gloss, deforma- tion, wrinkles, swelling, peeling, cracks, serious damage, or other changes in appearance against the limit samples that are agreed on between the parties concerned. 83+3oc table 3 exposure time condi- tions exposure time (for reference) in hours remarks exposure time is weather between the parties meter concerned. 3052c -3012c 7052c 4oc2oc 95+3%rh 2 h 0.5 h 3 h 0.5 h 2 h 0.5 h 15 h 0.5 h table 4 tester operating conditions sunshine weather meter i 12 minutes of spray i during 60 minutes of exposure, or 18 minutes none i of spray during 120 water spray cycle i minutes of exposure nozzle diameter i 1 mm nozzle water pressure 78.4 to 127.4 kpa 0.8 to 1.3 kgf/cm2 remarks: test conditions are subject to agreement between the parties concerned. 8.4.2 accelerated test method b (ultraviolet ray fluorescent lamp weatherability test) equipment ultraviolet ray fluorescent lamp weathering tester testing method test conditions and time are subject to agree- ment between the parties concerned. after the test, remove the test pieces, leave them at room temperature for 1 hour to let them dry, and visually check them. 8 . 4 . 3 outdoor exposure test test according to the outdoor weatherability test spec- ified in jis d 0205. however, expose test pieces for 2 years. after 12 and 24 months of exposure, wash the test pieces on the surface with a sponge, wipe them well on the surface. after 24 months of exposure, polish the test pieces with wax, and evaluate them. ex- posure place is subject to agreement between the parties concerned. 8.5 heat resistance test equipment air circulation type gear oven testing methods use either of the following methods. method a heat test pieces in a gear oven set to 8 0 + 2 c for 168 hours, leave them at room temperature for 1 hour, and check them for change in appearance, discoloration, fading, excess adhesive from the film edges, etc. after leaving the test pieces for 24 hours, conduct a test on adhesive strength as specified in 8.3. method b test and evaluate in the same way as in method a except that the test pieces should be heated in a gear oven set to 70i2“c for 96 hours. 8 . 6 heat-cold cycle resistance test (1) equipment air circulation type low-temperature thermos- tatic oven, air circulation type gear oven use either of the following methods. (2) testing methods method a repeat the cycle shown in table 5 for a total of 5 times, leave the test pieces at room temperature for 1 hour, and check them for change in appearance, discolora- tion, fading, adhesive separation, etc. after leaving the test pieces for 24 hours, con- duct a test on adhesive strength as specified in 8.3. method b repeat the cycle shown in table 5 for a total of 3 times and evaluate. table 5 heat-cold cycle test conditions (1 cycle) temper- low room room low room high room aturei temper- temper- temper- temper- temper- temper- temper- humiditv i ature i ature i h z i t y i ature i ature i ature 1 ature i ature 4 -,-,- jaso m 334-86 abrasion conditions 8.7 moisture resistance test cover the tip of abrasion piece with rubbing white cotton abrasion wheel cloth ( j e l 0803 cs-lo no. 3 white cotton 8.1 1 wax remover resistance test (1) (2) equipment thermo-hygrostatic oven testing method place test pieces in a thermo-hygrostatic oven set to 40+i0c and 95% humidity or more, with their film side up, and keep them level in it for 168 hours. after removing the test pieces from the oven, wipe the film surfaces with a clean cloth, leave them at room temperature for 1 hour, and when they are dry, visually check them for change in appearance, dis- coloration, and fading. after leaving them for 24 hours, conduct a test on adhesive strength as specified in 8.3. 8.8 water resistance test keep test pieces immersed in tap water at normal tem- perature (23t2c) for 168 hours, remove them from the water, wipe them with a dry, clean cloth, leave them at room temperature for 1 hour to let them dry, and check them for change in appearance, discolora- tion, and fading. then, after leaving them for 24 hours, conduct a test on adhesive strength as specified in 8.3. 8.9 salt spray test leave test pieces in a salt spray tester for 240 hours, remove them from the tester, carefully wash them with running water, wipe the film surfaces with a dry, clean cloth, leave the test pieces at room temperature for 1 hour, and check them for change in appearance, dis- coloration, and fading. then, after leaving the test pieces for 24 hours, conduct a test on adhesive strength as specified in 8.3. 8.10 protective wax resistance test apply protective wax uniformly to test pieces using a spray or a brush, keep them horizontally at room tem- perature for 1 hour, place them in an oven set to 80+2“c and keep them in it for 24 hours, then let them cool at room temperature, wipe the film surfaces with a dry, clean cloth, and check them for change in appearance, discoloration, and fading. the protective wax to be used is to be as agreed on between the parties concerned. equipment thermostatic water bath testing method keep test pieces immersed in a wax remover liquid set to 40+1“c for 30 minutes, leave them at room temperature for 2 hours, and check them for change in appearance, discoloration, and fading. the wax remover to be used is to be as agreed on between the parties concerned. 8.1 2 abrasion resistance test (1) equipment abrasion tester type li specified in jis l 0823 (apparatus for testing of colour fastness to rubbing), or a tabor abrasion tester after repeating the test for the specified fre- quency under the conditions shown in table 6, visually check for surface abrasion.
