But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa. The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre museum(卢浮宫博物馆)where it is housed. “The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said. Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the worlds most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state. Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. “It is very interesting that when youre not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,” said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. “Its because direct vision(视觉)is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.” However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to Frances King Francis I in 1519. In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later. During World War II, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces. Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell. 21The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means the Mona Lisa _. 4 A. is losing its value B. is being damaged after so many years C. is getting more valuable with years passing D. will rot away 22Experts havent any repairs on the Mona Lisa because_. A. by indirect vision B. at a distance C. by direct vision D. in shadows 24From the last paragraph, we can infer that_. A. many interesting stories have been written about the Mona Lisa B. people are interested in the stories about the Mona Lisa. C. some mysteries still remain to be solved about the Mona Lisa. D. Many more stories will be told about the Mona Lisa. Below is some adviee on how to prevent cancer. Blueberries also offer a large dose of vitamins C (14 milligrams per cup). So at breakfast, try to take in a cup and a half of blueberries in your cereal or yogurt, or mixed with other berries. Relax Feeling stressed or worried? Find ways to relax and you may reduce your chances of developing cancer. Purdue University researchers tracked 1,600 men over 12 years and found that half of those with high levels of worry died during the study period. Instead of stressing about the past or future, focus on the present and relax! Take Selenium(硒) Selenium is well known for its cancer-fighting properties. In a study of almost 1,000 men, researchers from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that when men with the lowest initial levels of selenium in their bodies received a daily supplement over a 4-year period, they cut their prostate(前列腺)cancer risk by a remarkable 92 percent. However, it is possible to get too much of a good thing, so monitor your intake of selenium-containing supplements, Brazil nuts, tuna, meats and grains carefully. Break a Sweat Even a small amount of exercise can offer major cancer-fighting benefits. In a study of 29,110 men published in the International Journal of Cancer, men who exercised just once a week had a percent lower risk of prostate cancer than men who didnt work out at all. The results showed that amongst men and women with lower levels of authority at work, women had slightly higher levels of depression. This is normal since overall women suffer from depression slightly more than men.Amongst men and women with higher levels of authority at work, however,it was women who had many more symptoms of depression than men.Men in authority actually had a 10% lower risk of depression, while authority increased the risk of women having depressive symptoms by 9%. 7 Dr Pudrovska continued:“What shocked us is that women with job authority in our study are advantaged in terms of most characteristics that are strong signs of positive mental health. These women have more education, higher incomes, better jobs, and higher levels of job satisfaction than women without job authority.Yet,they have worse mental health than lowerstatus(地位)women.” The cause of this discrepancy is not known, but Dr Pudrovska says:“Years of social science research suggests that women in authority positions deal with interpersonal anxiety, negative social interactions, negative stereotypes, prejudice, social isolation(社会孤立),as well as resistance(抵抗)from colleagues.Women in authority positions are viewed as lacking in the assertiveness(果断)and confidence of strong leaders. But when these women display such characteristics, they are judged negatively for being unfeminine(不像女性的)This causes mental stress.” Men,on the other hand,do not have to face these kinds of negative stereotypes about their abilities. 29Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? AFemale bosses get less stress from work than male bosses. BFemale bosses get the same stress from work as male bosses. CFemale bosses get the same stress from work as employees. DFemale bosses get more stress from work than male bosses. 30What conclusion can we draw from the passage? AThe higher levels of authority, the fewer women suffer depression. BThe higher levels of authority, the more women suffer depression. CThe lower levels of authority, the more men suffer depression. DThe lower levels of authority, the more women suffer depression. 31What did Dr Pudrovska think of the results? AExciting. BSurprising. CDisappointing. DInspiring. 32What does the underlined word“discrepancy”in Paragraph 5 mean? ADifference. BExcellence. CPreference. DReference. 8 Dear Guys, Id like to talk to you about the shame you subjected me to last night. Let me first refresh your memory: You, a group of fit, young men, were playing soccer on the field across from my apartment building. I, a better-than-average looking young woman, was walking along the sidewalk with my groceries. Thats when your ball came flying over the fence and landed in front of me. One of you approached and asked politely if I would throw the ball back to you. Fighting the urge to drop my bags and run screaming down the street, I reluctantly (勉 强地) agreed. Before I continue, let me explain something that I didnt have a chance to mention last night: I hate sports. More specifically, I hate sports involving balls. This results from my lack of natural ability when it comes to throwing, catching and hitting. Im bad at aiming too. So you can understand why Id be nervous at what Im sure seemed to you like a laughably simple request. However, wanting to appear agreeable, I put my bags down, picked up the ball and, eyes half-shut, and threw it as hard as I could. It hit the middle of the fence and bounced back to me. Trying to act casually, I said something about being out of practice, and then picked up the ball again. If youll remember, at your command, I agreed to try throwing underhand. While outwardly I was smiling, in my head, I was praying, oh God, oh please oh please oh please. I threw the ball upward with all my strength, terrified by what happened next. The ball hit slightly higher up on the fence and bounced back to me. This is the point where I start to take issue with you. Wouldnt it have been a better use of your time, and mine, if you had just walked around the fence and took the ball then? I was clearly struggling; my smiles were more and more forced. And yet, you all just stood there, motionless. Seeing that you werent going to let me out of the trouble, I became desperate. Memories of middle school softball came flooding back. I tried hard to throw the ball 9 but it only went about eight feet, then I decided to pick it up and dash with ball in hand towards the baseline, while annoyed thirteen-year-old boys screamed at me that I was ruining their lives. Children are cruel. Being a big girl now, I pushed those memories aside and picked up the soccer ball for the third time. I forced a good-natured laugh while crying inside as you patiently shouted words of support over the fence at me. “Throw it granny-style!” one of you said. “Just back up a little and give it all youve got!” another offered. And, most embarrassing of all, “You can do it!” I know you thought you were being encouraging, but it only served to deepen the shame. Anyway, I accepted your ball-throwing advice, backed up, rocked back and forth a little, took a deep breath and let it fly. It hit the edge of the fence and bounced back to me. I surprised myselfand Im sure you as wellby letting out a cry, “DAMN IT!” I then willed myself to have a heart attack and pass out in front of you just so Id be put out of my misery. Alas, the heart attack didnt happen, and you continued to look at me expectantly, like you were content to do this all night. I had become a sort of exhibition for you. I could feel your collective thoughts drifting through the chain-link: “Can she really not do it? But I mean, really?” Unfortunately for you, I wasnt really game to continue your experiment. Three failed attempts at a simple task in front of a group of people in a two-minute period were just enough blows for me for one night. I picked up the ball one last time, approached the fence and grumbled, “Please just come get the damn ball.” And you did. And thanks to you, I decided at that very moment to never throw anything ever again, except disrespectful glances at people who play sports. Sincerely, Jen Cordery 33The writer agreed to throw the ball because _. Usually, when asked “Can you spare some 36 ?” Ive been struck with a feeling of 37 if I passed by without giving a coin or two. My conscience was hurt again when I was making a 38 in Venice in 2006. I was sitting in a quiet caf. Outside the caf on the street was an old woman on her knees, 11 39 . Steady streams of 40 were walking past her. A young backpacker stood away from the crowd drinking something, but I noticed he was also 41 the woman. She knelt motionlessly, her head almost touching the ground, a worn blanket providing little protection 42 the cold. The sight was especially 43 when compared with the signs of the 44 city around her. A tourist group hurried along the street, 45 at the woman and walked on. Another group of tourists arrived, 46 again, walked past her. The backpacker watched. Then, as I prepared to leave, I stopped at the sight of the backpacker 47 and placing some money in the womans cup. He did this rather 48 , just before the arrival of another tourist group. I watched 49 the leader of the group stopped and put some money in the cup. With the young man 50 the way, other tourists followed. The young backpa
