response to great gatsbyi, as the representative of those who suffered a lot with the extreme fears of poorness, would become gatsbys acolyte. many of us, who came from poor family, although all had high ideals since child and planted the firm belief into the heart that ill do my best to change my situation and squeeze myself into the rank of the rich, just couldnt show constant struggles for the ideal according to my experience. but gatsby did it. though his own struggle, he seized a big fortune that a lot of people were too far behind to catch up.actually, everyone has a high ideal, but the most important is to make it come true with your action. as the child in the poor family the same as gatsby,i had the same dream as his. and when i did farm work every time, i would swear something such as hard study but my swearing was in vain when i came to the school. so i gave him my best appreciation.according to the text, as his greatest ideal, the love to daisy becomes undoubtedly his spirit support during the process of making fortune.since daisy took away his heart, he made constant efforts to pursue her. he didnt change his mind whatever happened.in “supernatural eagle and swords couple”(神雕侠侣),the kungfu novel of jinyong, the leading role yangguo could wait for his lover for the whole 16 years in loneliness, and even was willing to die for her finally. we said this is the highest state of love. the same as that, gatsby also died for his lover. so he also reached the highest state of love.above all, gatsby had two great hearts. one was born for his lover. another was born to overcome thousands of difficulties. 078班 074050219 杨家碧q: why people refused to come to gatsbys funeral?seen from the surface, the great gatsby was a love story. in fact, it was a critical and ironic taste for the social reality in 1920s of american. after reading this chapter and related information about the great gatsby, we have to think about the reasons why people refused to come to gatsbys funeral. in the view of human nature: it is said that humanity is formed in a certain social system and under certain historical conditions. in the “jazz age ”-an age of materialistic, pleasure-seeking supremacy and the anomic, people cared more about money and their possession. people were influenced by the stream of “american dream” which is a belief, a desire that in full of opportunities and wealth american land, people can realize their dreams after personal struggle. but the material prosperity brought the anomic and disappointment instead of the disappearance of narrow prejudice on different social hierarchy. gatsby become rich by dealing with illegal business in order to get his daisy back. hundreds of people came to his luxury party and indulged in hedonism in order to make their life less unbearable. daisys married life was unhappy since her husband, tom, had a lover name myrtle. she went to gatsbys party just to get mental satisfaction and to get rid of her nada. but on hearing gatsbys death, daisy and tom had gone away early that afternoon. those chance visitors vanished as if they had never appeared before. they thought gatsby deserved all that. he had died so that his prosperity was also had gone away. they couldnt enjoy it any more. the best choice was to leave him alone.in the view of friendship, i firmly believe that a friend in need is a friend indeed. but in the “jazz age”, i see that a friend in interest is a friend indeed. the friendship was based on your status, possessions and reputations. after those were gone, in the face of difficulties, the irresponsibility, indifference, hypocrisy of friendship appeared in front of us. before the car accident that she killed myrtle, daisy made use of gatsby to get her mental satisfaction. after the car accident, daisy and tom retreated back into her money or vast carelessness. tom shirked responsibility to gatsby so that wilson killed gatsby. they smashed up things and creatures and let other people clean up the mess they had made. that was total irresponsibility. meyer wolfsheim was a partner of gatsby in worlds series transaction. he raised gatsby up out of nothing. we can say that they were totally tied up together in the past. but he said:” i am tied up in some very important business and cannot get mixed up in this thing now.” when a man gets killed i never like to get mixed up in it any way. i keep out” slagle phoned just in order to inform gatsby about their business. the moment that he heard gatsbys death, the connection was broken. tom said “lets learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.” they were so indifferent and hypocritical that they refused to come to the funeral was reasonable. in the view of the weakness of human nature: people tend to be lonely, worried about work and money. people are greedy, selfish and vainglorious. they took advantage of others life for their own benefit. morality has been marked with the stamp of money. daisy hadnt sent a message or a flower and had gone away with tom. she didnt want to give up her quiet and tasteful life for the sake of gatsbys love especially after gatsbys death. what she preferred was to follow tom and treat gatsby as a stranger. klipspringer phoned mr. carraway just to get his tennis shoes back instead of coming to the funeral. he used to live in gatsbys house and benefit a lot. for the work and money, meyer wolfsheim, tom, dan cody etc kept them out of the funeral. they were selfish. if they couldnt benefit from doing things, they would find more excuses to refuse others request. they were on the way to prosperity. how could they be blocked by gatsbys death? now, gatsby had died and he was useless. they neednt come to his funeral.the lonely and tragic funeral was made up of peoples irresponsibility, vanity, hypocrisy and indifference at that age. in the end, gatsby went alone.外院075班 074050142 李春花question:why people refused to come to gatsbys funeral?its a sharp comparison before gatsbys death and after that. before gatsby died, crowds of acolytes, even strangers, came to gatsbys home to attend parties. they were chatting, singing, dancing and laughing all night. gatsby was famous for his hospitality and friendliness. he felt proud of himself, for there were more and more people who were known or unknown coming to visit him.it was the woman daisy that had stolen his heart. after gatsby became rich, daisy accepted him again. however, daisy whom gatsby loved most did not appear when the funeral began.gatsby thought he had won daisys heart. however, the main attraction for daisy was his money. “money decides everything” was her motto. daisy ran away after the accident, but gatsby paid his life for the love between daisy and him. the true lover of daisy is money. those who came to his party just wanted to get some benefits from gatsby. they respected gatsby superficially, but they looked down upon gatsby in their inner heart. they are malicious, jealous, and unreliable.this is also a matter of friendship. they built strong “friendship” with gatsby just for their own sake. gatsby was rich and generous. he could squander any penny for his lover and friends. they did not dare to attend his funeral, because they had fears of getting involved in. they knew some details about gatsby and daisy, tom and myrtle, but they hid it in their minds. as the situation went worse, they even chose to become invisible. they feared to attend gatsbys funeral because they did not want their benefits to be hurt, even a little.daisy did not venture to attend gatsbys funeral, because she knew that gatsbys death had something to do with her and her husband. in order to get rid of the punishment of law, they chose to run away. she was the true criminal who had committed murder.those who used to enjoy and chat with gatsby also made a choice not to attend his funeral. they preferred to be a coward rather than stand out to support gatsby. they refused to attend his funeral because of their indifference, jealousy, self-pity, selfishness and the betrayal of their conscience. the only thing they pursued was money.on the one hand, gatsby was rich and prestigious. on the other hand, he was poor and pitiful. in order to pursue the luxurious life, he ran his business illegally. in order to prove his love towards daisy, he chose to be a scapegoat. what a poor life he lived!外语075班 074050124 徐娟why do people refuse to come to gatsbys funeral? first, i think people here can be divided into two groups. one is those who have close relationship with gatsby, so-called friends and his lover. his lover, daisy, who he risks his life to defend, betrays him and runs away with another man. she even doesnt care about gatsbys life and death, just playing him as a fool. how can it be possible for this kind of woman to come to gatsbys funeral and mourn for him? i guess she even wont be sad for gatsby. besides, his so-called friend, meyer wolfsheim, gatsbys most important business partner, says that he couldnt come as he is tied up in some very important business. friends like this only care about the benefit gatsby will bring them instead of really caring about the benefit gatsbys health and happiness. since gatsby is dead, meyer will not get any benefit from him anymore, so there is no need for him to contact gatsby or come to his funeral anymore. furthermore, the most impressive friend of gatsby is a man who calls for a pair of shoes, a pair of tennis shoes he left at gatsbys home. he cares about his shoes, his picnic, except gatsby. the other group of people who refused to come is his party friends. these people come to gatsby for free meals and a place to enjoy themselves. maybe some of them even dont know who gatsby is, let alone come to his funeral to express their sorrow. actually, they have nothing related to gatsby, so they wont come to gatsbys funeral. in conclusion, peoples refusal to come to gatsbys funeral reflects peoples indifference and selfishness. they only care about money and their own interests. they never treat others with sincere hearts. their relationship with others is using and being used. for them, there is no love, no friendship existing in the world, but only money and interests. thats my opinion about why people refused to come to gatsbys funeral.075班 074050146 陈银跃why people refused to come to gatsbys funeral?through the text, we know that even though nick tried his best to call people to gatsbys funeral, everything he did was in vain. those people treated money as everything. the business partners of gatsby were busy earning money, and they didnt care his death at all. they didnt come to gatsbys funeral because they thought they couldnt get benefit any more from gatsby. some people thought that gatsby had got what he deserved. a person would rather care his shoes than express a little sorry to gatsbys death. these showed that these people were indifferent and uncompassionate. how insensitive their souls were! the woman, daisy who gatsby died for had gone away with his husband early, she was so hypocritical and cold that she hadnt sent a message or a flower when knowing gatsbys death. she took advantage of others life for her benefit. she killed myrtle but gatsby received the punishment by his life. myrtles husband , wilson was ignorant and extremely impulsive, and he killed gatsby before he investigated the truth clearly. they were so cruel, tough and indifferent to others life. so they refused to come to gatsbys funeral. the people often came to gatsbys party and enjoy the happy life when gatsby were alive. however, they were unwilling to come to his funeral and express a little sorrow to him when he died. they just enjoyed material, and they had no feeling and friendship. they were just like a corpse and they just knew money, binge and food. they know nothing except these materials. their life was so luxury and meaningless and their spirit was so decayed and empty. according to these facts, these people refused to come to gatsbys funeral. they just cared themselves and didnt care others at all. 075班 李群芳q: why people refused to come to gatsbys funeral?to answer this question, lets look ahead of his life changes. he used to be a poor and ordinary person; he was even looked down upon by people including daisys family. then he came to the eastern land ambitiously, and he did really make a good living there by doing illegal trades. when he owned the money, reputation, fame and social status also came to him. before he became rich, no one liked him. however, he became popular to all kinds of friends. when he held parties, many people came without invitation no matter they were familiar with him or not . after they heard the news of his death, they disappeared immediately. why? they were his friends when he was alive. how could they refuse to attend his funeral? it is extremely ironic, but o the other hand, it has been expected. from gatsbys death, we can find the so-called friendship between gatsby and his former friends is not sincere. here we have to say people are always vainglorious and they tend to develop relationship based on interests such as money, position, power especially in business and politics field. they can do the illegal things immorally; they can also treat others indifferently. in their eyes, interest is the most important. i feel very sorry for gatsbys times and also for the present. people became more and more cold-blooded; they could acquire everything they want by all means even by doing harm to their relatives. i hate such kind of people who turn to you for help when they need you but do harm to you after they made use of you.gatsby is a great hero for he always has a pure and kind heart towards people around him. he believes deeply in his faithlove. but daisy is not a woman who deserves his love. from daisy, we can see the weak point of human beingsselfishness. she ran away after gatsbys death without missing and guilt for the person she once loved. just like other people, she was afraid of being bogged down in troubles. she just cared about herself. its she who leads the love to a tragedy.外院075班 074050126 朱鸿雁question: why did people refuse to come to gatsbys funeral?gatsby lived in a miserable period of america, the jazz age. by fitzgerald words, “it was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and even it was an age of satire.” but more actually, it was a terrible age that was hated by people. at that time, people knew nothing but to seek pleasure as much as possible. there were no true love and friendship in that period, peoples heart was filled up with nothing but eagerness for money and pleasure. they were selfish, ruthless, and very cold. the relations among people were based on money and status. they managed to take advantage of others life for their own benefits, they made friends only for seeking pleasure, and also they tended to betray their friends in order to satisfy themselves. so, here i want to make a conclusion that “the jazz age” is a spiritual ruin, a spiritual wasteland which was occupied by dirt and decay. there were no traditional belief and ambition. people never sympathized with others, even their family members. as lovers and couples, they still hurt each other, and their relations were rather complicated, all of these were only for seeking for pleasure. especially daisy and tom, i think they are the most ruthless people in the story. for daisy, gatsby loved her very much, but she was not moved. instead, she took it for granted. in order to obtain financial benefit, she sacrificed her love. its very distressing. tom was also a cold and selfish person. actually almost all the people living in that age were just tom and daisy, self- centered and relentless. so, at gatsbys funeral, there were few people to mourn for him. most of his pervious friends refused to come. daisy was enjoying her happy life with tom, she forgot the miserable gatsby. even gatsbys father, when he saw his sons luxurious house, his pride had surpassed his sadness of loosing his son. it was very lamentable. all of these showed the ruthlessness and cruelty. people were inhuman. their rejections of coming to gatsbys funeral were determined by their selfish and cold-hearted personalities. 075班 074050132 雷红梅why did people refused to come to gatsbys funeral?for the whole novel, it seems that the author described a love story, but in fact, it is filled with critical and ironic tastes to then social conditions and real situations. for example, when gatsby was alive and rich, many a people came to his house very often to entertain or even to flatter in order that they could benefit from him. therefore, his house was full of happy, lively, sumptuous laughter, and a lot of beautiful and good words always haunted him at that time. however, after he died, the totally reverse situation was presented - nearly nobody was willing to attend his funeral. its sympathetic and pitiful. i think this was caused by peoples pursuits of material pleasure, taking advantages of others pain for their own interests, and weakness of human nature. to begin with, i believe that what those people really pursued was material pleasure and enjoyment, not real friendship. they flattered gatsby when he was alive just because he was rich, which could make their pursuits come true. once they couldnt get what their want any more, their attitudes would totally change into the opposite ones. this is decided by their perspectives of mammonism and hedonism.furthermore, those people usually took advantages of others pain or even lives for their own interests. their happiness was built on o
