My presentation consists of five groups of figures. First, the latest numbers, released on April 28th and based on the nationwide census conducted last year, show a total population for mainland China of 1.34 billion. Second, the numbers revealed a sleep decline in the average annual population growth rate, down to 0.57%, while in the previous decade, the rate was 1.07%. Third, the total fertility rate had been 5.8 in 1950. The rate had declined sharply to 2.3 by 1980. Now the rate is just 1.4. As to fertility rate, there is a standard named replacement. The replacement rate should be 2.1. We can see todays rate is far below the replacement rate. Forth, people above the age of 60 now represent 13.3% of the total, under the age of 14 declined to 17%. With the development of our countrys economy and health care system, the order can live longer and longer. The more old generation, the less young generation. The whole society is likely to face the ageing of population. Fifth, our country has a traditional gender discrimination. Many families would do whatever they must to ensure that their one permissible child is a son. The new census data show that among newborns, there were more than 118 boys for every 100 girls.
