2、performing plays,Can you think of any plays you have watched and really enjoyed? Why did you enjoy them? Have you ever written and performed a successful play? What made it a success?,Setting out a script is very different to setting out a story. There are no speech marks and all actions are shown i
3、n brackets. A simple script looks something like this:,Bob: Where are we? (looking around) Bill: Thats just what I said. (looking at boy) Bob: What? Bill: Thats just what I said. Bob: You just said what? Bill: What? (becoming angry) Bob: What did you just say? (confused),Dialogue,Stage Directions,Na
4、me of character who is speaking,Scripts,Fill in the missing bits of this script using your own ideas.,School Playground Enter Sam, Alex and Pat Sam:Have we got _ next? (groaning) Alex:_ (_) Pat: I wish _ _:Well I wish _ Alex:At least we can_ (they laugh) Pat: _ A bell rings. Exit Sam, Alex and Pat.,
5、Scripts,Character,Read aloud this piece of dialogue. What does it tell you about the characters?,Mr Cartright: Get that chairs legs back on the floor, Sajid. All four of them. Im watching you, Gwynn Phillips. Dont think Im not. (He slams his files down on the desk) Right! Listen, everybody! And that
6、 means you too, Froggie Haynes. Do you want me to separate you two? The first thing were doing after waking up, George Spalder! is to choose this classs option for the school Science Fair,Remember: Sometimes when one character says something about another, it tells you more about the character who i
7、s speaking than the character being spoken about.,It is important to think carefully about the dialogue or monologue you write. However, it is up to the actors to use their voices to present this dialogue or monologue effectively. When you perform your scene, you will need to carefully consider:,VOL
8、UME,PACE,TONE,Voice,Tone is the expression used by the actor. Some people use a musical, sing-song-like tone when they speak while others are more dead pan and serious. Tone will tell you most about how a character is feeling.,Can you alter your tone? It is a skill which requires subtlety. Say the s
9、entence below using the following tones:,“This must be the best day of my life!”,Sarcastic,Arrogant,Bored,Loving,Tone,Pace is how slowly or quickly an actor says his lines. Sometimes it is necessary to speed up a piece of dialogue whereas at other times it is more appropriate to slow things down.,Wh
10、at pace would be most appropriate for performing the following scenarios? Try and see how they sound.,Pace,A character winning the lottery. A character telling a story about a sick animal.,Volume is how quietly or loudly an actor says his lines. Sometimes it is necessary to shout and at other times
11、it is more appropriate to whisper. This can tell the audience something about the feelings of the characters as well as how they relate to each other and volume also often effects the tone of the scene.,AGHH!,Sshhhhh,Volume,Pump up the volume?,How a character speaks, and how characters speak to each
12、 other, reveals nearly all of the information the audience need to know. It is only through character interaction that tension and atmosphere are created.,Voice,How would you use tone, pace and volume in a scene between a check-in clerk and a passenger to create a comic atmosphere? Try acting out yo
13、ur ideas.,When you perform a play, think carefully about your body movements and facial expressions. Imagine Beckham has just scored a goal for England. What do you think his body movements and facial expressions will be like?,Body language,Characters are not only revealed through dialogue and monol
14、ogue but also through how they behave, that is, through action and movement.,The costume a character wears can also reveal a variety of things about them (and how they wish to be perceived): job era in which they are living social status age. What else?,Remember: often our initial impressions of peo
15、ple can be mistaken and therefore we must be careful when judging people by the clothes they wear.,Costume,What might the following costumes tell you about the characters who are wearing them?,Costume,a young school teacher from 2003 a rich elderly woman from the 1920s a football team of 2020 a prin
16、cess from the 18th century a kings jester from the 16th century.,Costume,Design a costume for:,The set can be important because it can help to create atmosphere and reveal information about place. Even a single object strategically placed or carried by one of the actors can reveal details about the
17、tone, place or characters. These objects are known as props.,What ideas would you begin to form about a character who carried one or all of the following:,a knife a suitcase a wand.,Set,Design a set for a play which opens in winter and centres around the lives of two orphans. Think carefully about the following befor
