Beforethe1830s,mostnewspapersweresoldthroeghannualsubscriptionsin

America,usueilly$8to$10ayear.Today$8or$10seemsasmal1amountofmoney,butat

thattimetheseamountswereforbiddingtomostcitizens.Accordingly,newspaperswere

readalmostonlybyrichpeopleinpoliticsorthetrades.Inaddition,mostnewspapers

hadlittleinthemthatwouldappealtoamass<iudience.Theyweredullandvisually

forbidding.Buttherevolutionthatwastakingplaceinthe1830swouldchangeall

that.

Thetrend,then,wastowardtheupennypaper“atermreferringtopapersmade

widelyavailabletothepublic.Itmeantanyinexpensivenewspaper;perhapsmore

importantlyitmeantnewspapersthatcou1dbeboughtinsinglecopiesonthestreet.

Thisdevelopmentdidnottakeplaceovernight.Ithadbeenpossible(butnot

easy)tobuysinglecopiesofnewspapersbefore1830,butthisusuallymeantthereader

hadtogodowntotheprinter*sofficetopurchaseacopy.Streetsaleswerealmost

unknown.However,withinafewyears,streetsalesofnewspaperswouldbecommonplacein

easterncities.Atfirstthepriceofsinglecopieswasseldomapenny-usuallytwoor

threecentswascharged-andsomeoftheolderwell-knownpaperschargedfiveorsix

cents.Butthephrase“pennypaperwcaughtthepublic*sfancy,andsoontherewould

bepapersthatdidindeedsellforonlyapenny.

Thisnewtrendofnewspapersforuthemanonthestreetwdidnotbegin

programme,Katebeganhertraininglastspring.Normally,recipientsofthe

scholarshipwouldattendgroundschoolinpersonwheretheylearnthefundamentalsof

flying.Duetothepandemic,however,Katespenthourseachweekendstudyingonline

lessonsinherroomwhenevershegotabreakfromhomework.Oncesummercamearound,

Kateandthreepeersputintwostraightweeksofgroundschool,reviewingflight
