InNorthAmerica,thelocalpeopledidnotlikehavingtopaysuchhighprices.Insteadofoverpayingfortea

fromtheBritish,theyturnedtoDutchtraders,whosecretlybroughtteatothecountrythatwasjustasgood-and

muchlessexpensive.Althoughthisbrokethelaw,theAmericanpeopledidn*tcare.Theygotthesamecupofteaat

amuchlowerprice.

TheEastIndiaCompany,however,didn'tlikethisatall.Bythe1760s,theywerelosingmillionsofpounds

eachyeartoDutchtraders---ahugeamountofmoneyinatimewhen£60ayearwasconsideredagood

income.InsteadofreducingtheirpricestocompetewiththeDutch,thecompanyaskedtheBritishgovernmentfor

helpandthegovernmentagreed.
