Thereisonlysomuchlandontheearth,andsowhatwe

candowithitislimited.Somepeoplebelievethathuman

needsforfarmland,housingandindustryshouldcome

first,whileothersbelievethatsomelandshouldbesetaside

forendangeredanimals.Iamoftheopinionthatweshould

reservesomelandfortheworld'sanimalsforthefollowing

reasons.

First,mankind'sneedforlandisconstantlygrowing.If

thedemandisnotcheckedinsomeway,humanswill

eventuallydevelopalloftheearth'savailableland.Atthat

time,mankindwillhavenomoreroomtogrow,andallthe

wildanimalswillhavedisappeared,aswellasothervaluable

resources.Second,humansareabletoinnovateandcanuse

thelandthattheyalreadypossessinmoreefficientways.

Animalsareunabletodothis.Oncetheirlandistakenaway

fromthemtheywilldie.Thirdandlast,endangeredanimals

areanimportantpartofthebiodiversityofourplanet.Ifthey

disappear,wecannotpredictwhattheeffectwill

be.Therefore,weshouldtreatsuchanimalsasavaluable

resourcetobeprotected.

Tosumup,theworld'sendangeredanimalsarean

importantresourceandweshouldprotectthembysetting

asidesomelandforthem.Althoughmankind'sneedforland

continuestogrow,peopleareintelligentandinventive

enoughtoputthelandtheyhavetobetteruse.Inthisway,

wecanhaveenoughlandforfarming,housingandindustry,

andpreservethebiodiversityoftheplanetatthesametime.

2Theincreaseininternationalbusinessandinforeign

investmenthascreatedaneedforexecutiveswithknowledge

offoreignlanguagesandskillsincross-culturalcommunication.

Americans,however,havenotbeenwelltrainedineitherarea

and,consequently,havenotenjoyedthesamelevelofsuccess

innegotiationinaninternationalarenaashavetheirforeign

counterparts.

Negotiatingistheprocessofcommunicatingbackand

forthforthepurposeofreachinganagreement.It

involvespersuasionandcompromise,butinorderto

participateineitherone,thenegotiatorsmustunderstandthe

waysinwhichpeoplearepersuadedandhowcompromiseis

reachedwithinthecultureofthenegotiation.

Inmanyinternationalbusinessnegotiationsabroad,

Americansareperceivedaswealthyandimpersonal.Itoften

appearstotheforeignnegotiatorthattheAmericanrepresents

alargemulti-million-dollarcorporationthatcanaffordtopay

thepricewithoutbargainingfurther.TheAmericannegotiator's

rolebecomesthatofanimpersonalpurveyorofinformation

andcash.

InstudiesofAmericannegotiatorsabroad,severaltraits

havebeenidentifiedthatmayservetoconfirmthis

stereotypicalperception,whileunderminingthenegotiator's

position.Twotraitsinparticularthatcausecross-cultural

misunderstandingaredirectnessandimpatienceonthepartof

theAmericannegotiator.Furthermore,Americannegotiators

ofteninsistonrealizingshort-termgoals.Foreign

negotiators,ontheotherhand,mayvaluetherelationship

establishedbetweennegotiatorsandmaybewillingtoinvest

timeinitforlong-termbenefits.Inordertosolidifythe

relationship,theymayoptforindirectinteractionswithout

regardforthetimeinvolvedingettingtoknowtheother

negotiator.

3TheInfluenceofTelevisionandMovies

Thereisnodoubtthatwatchingtelevisionandmovies

caninfluencethewaythatpeoplebehave.Moreover,it

seemsthatpeoplearespendingmoreandmoretime

watchingsomesortofvisualentertainment,whetherit

istelevision,avideotapeoraDVD.Therefore,theeffects

ofvisualmediacannotbeignored.

Oneobviouseffectofthesemediaisthatwatchingthem

inducespeopletobuycertainproducts.Television

advertisingiswidespreadand,nowadays,evenmovie

theaterspermitadvertisements.AnotherwayTVandthe

moviesaffectpeopleisthattheygivepeopleeithera

broaderviewoftheworldoradistortedone,dependingon

whattypeofprogramtheywatch.Thosewhowatchnews

andeducationalprogramcanlearnmanynewthingswhile

thosewhowatchprimarilyentertainmentshowsmaycome

tobelievethatmostpeopleintheworldpossessgreat

wealthandgoodlooks.Itmaymakethembecome

dissatisfiedwiththeirownlives.Finally,perhapsthemost

susceptibleviewersarechildren,whomaybeunabletotell

factfromfictionandmaytrytoimitateactsthattheyseeon

TVorinthemovies.

Withtheever-increasingpopularityofvideo

entertainment,societymustpayattentiontothese

effects.Televisionandmovies,whileentertainingand

informative,cannottaketheplaceofrealexperience.

4LivingLonger

Inthepastitwasnotuncommonforamantodieatforty,

havinglivedafulllife.Butnowweconsideralifespanofforty

yearstobeveryshort.Itisnotunusualforpeopletoliveinto

theireightiesandnineties,andsomeevenreach100.What's

more,peoplearelivinglong,healthylivesandareactivewell

intotheir"goldenyears".

Mankind'slongevityisduemainlytoadvancesinscience

andtechnology.Medicalbreakthroughshaveeradicated

manyfataldiseasesthatwereoncecommon.Perhapsmore

importantly,bettergeneralhealthmeansthatpeopleareless

likelytocontractinfectionsinthefirstplace.Better

healthalsohelps
