survey.Today'steenagersadmiretheirparentsandwelcomeparentalguidanceabout

importantmatterssuchascareerchoice—thoughcertainlynotMomandDad'sadviceon

mattersofpersonaltaste,suchasmusicorfashion.Whenweaskteenstochooseahero,

theyusuallyselectanolderfamilymemberratherthanaremotepublicfigure.Mostteens

saytheyenjoythecompanyofbothparentsandfriends.|E|Contrarytosome

stereotypes,mostadolescentsbelievetheymustbetolerantofdifferencesamong

individuals(thoughtheydonotalwaysfindthiseasyinthecliquishenvironmentofhigh

widespreadyouthrebellionwereoverdone:Mostkidsinthe'60sand'70ssharedtheir

parents*basicvalues.Still,itistruethatAmericanfamiliesaregrowingcloseratthe

dawnofthisnewmillennium(千年).Perhapsthereislesstofightabout,withthecountry

inaperiodoftranquilityandthedangersofdrugabuseandotherunwholesomebehavior

today'syoungcareverymuchabouttheircountry,aboutthebroadercivicandpolitical

environment,oraboutthefutureoftheirsociety.Theyseemtobeturninginward一

lotsofinsight,positivefeelingandinspirationalthinking.Butwealsofoundlittleinterest

inciviclifebeyondthetightcirclesoftheirfamilyandimmediatefriends.[I]For

example,onlyoneboysaidhewouldliketobepresidentwhenhegrowsup.WhenIwas

inhighschool,dozensinmyclassalonewouldhaveanswereddifferently.Infact,other

recentstudieshavefoundtherehasneverbeenatimeinAmericanhistorywhensosmall

aproportionofyoungpeoplehavesoughtoracceptedleadershiprolesinlocalcivic

organizations.Itisalsotroublingthatvotingratesamongouryoungesteligiblevoters一
