ThePacificislandnationofNauruusedtobeabeautifulplace.Nowitisanecologicaldisasterarea.Nauru's

socialbalanceofthetwelvefamilygroupsontheisland.Aten-yearcivilwarstarted,whichreducedthe

populationfrom1,400to900.

Nauru'srealtroublesbeganin1899whenaBritishminingcompanydiscoveredphosphate(磷酸

盐)ontheisland.Infact,itfoundthattheislandofNauruwasnearlyallphosphate,whichavery

importantfertilizerforfarming.Thecompanybeganminingthephosphate.

Aphosphatemineisnotaholeintheground;itisastripmine.Whenacompanystrip-mines,it

removesthetoplayerofsoil.Thenittakesawaythematerialitwants.Stripminingtotallydestroysthe

land.Gradually,thelovelyislandofNaurustartedtolooklikethemoon.

In1968,Naurubecameoneoftherichestcountriesintheworld.Everyyearthegovernment

receivedmillionsandmillionsofdollarsforitsphosphate.

Unfortunately,theleadersinvestedthemoneyunwiselyandlostmillionsofdollars.Inaddition,they

usedmillionsmoredollarsfbrpersonalexpenses.Soonpeoplerealizedthattheyhadaterribleproblem

—theirphosphatewasrunningout.Ninetypercentoftheirislandwasdestroyedandtheyhadnothing.

In1910,MinorleftBroadmoorforanasyluminhisnativeAmerica.Murraywasattheporttowave
