welcomeparentalguidanceaboutimportantmatterssuchascareerchoice—thoughcertainlynot

MomandDad'sadviceonmattersofpersonaltaste,suchasmusicorfashion.Whenweaskteens

tochooseahero,theyusuallyselectanolderfamilymemberratherthanaremotepublicfigure.

Mostteenssaytheyenjoythecompanyofbothparentsandfriends.

E.Contrarytosomestereotypes,mostadolescentsbelievetheymustbetolerantofdifferences

amongindividuals(thoughtheydonotalwaysfindthiseasyinthecliquish(拉帮结i/i5的)

environmentofhighschool).Manyofthemvolunteerforcommunityservicewithdisadvantaged

parents'basicvalues.Still,itistruethatAmericanfamiliesaregrowingcloseratthedawnofthis

newmillennium(千年).Perhapsthereislesstofightabout,withthecountryinaperiodoftranquility

andthedangersofdrugabuseandotherunwholesomebehaviorwellknown.Perhapsintheface

ofimpersonalandintimidatingglobalization,ayoungperson'sfamilyfeelsmorelikeafriendly

haventhananoppressivetrap.Andperhapsparentsareactingmorelikeparentsthanintherecent

past.Withinjustthepastfiveyears,Ihavenoticedparentsreturningtoabeliefthatteenagersneed

theguidanceofeldersratherthantheliberal,"anythinggoes"modeofchild-rearingthatbecame

popularinthesecondhalfofthe20thcentury.

G.Butmissingfromallthesedataisthesensethattoday'syoungcareverymuchabouttheir

country,aboutthebroadercivicandpoliticalenvironment,oraboutthefutureoftheirsociety.They

seemtobeturninginward—generallyinapro-socialmanner,certainlywithpositivebenefitsfor

intimaterelationships,buttoooftenattieexpenseofaconnectionwiththepresentandfuture

worldbeyond,includingthesocietytheyw川onedayinherit.

H.Recently,weexaminedmorethan400essaysonthe"lawsoflife"thatteensfromtwo

communitieshadwrittenaspartofaneducationalprograminitiatedbytheJohnTempleton

FoundationinRadnor,Pa.Inthoseessays,andinfollow-upinterviewswithafewoftheteenagers,

wefoundlotsofinsight,positivefeelingandinspirationalthinking.Butwealsofoundlittleinterestin

civiclifebeyondthetightcirclesoftheirfamilyandimmediatefriends.

I.Forexample,onlyoneboysaidhewouldliketobepresidentwhenhegrowsup.WhenIwas

inhighschool,dozensinmyclassalonewouldhaveanswereddifferently.Infact,otherrecent

studieshavefoundtherehasneverbeenatimeinAmericanhistorywhensosmallaproportionof

youngpeoplehavesoughtoracceptedleadershiprolesinlocalcivicorganizations.Itisalso

troublingthatvotingratesamongouryoungesteligiblevoters-18-to24-year-olds-arewaydown:

Littlemorethanoneinfournowgotothepolls,eveninnationalelections,comparedwithalmost

twicethatmanywhen18-year-oldswerefirstgiventhevote.

J.Inourinterviews,manystudentsviewedpoliticswithsuspicionanddistaste."Mostpoliticians

arekindofcrooked(不诚实的)onestudentdeclared.Another,discussingnationalpolitics,said,"I

feellikeonepersoncan'tdothatmuch;andIgettheimpressionmostpeopledon'tthinkagroupof

people.Oneboysaid,'Tdratherbeconcentratingonartisticeffortsthansavingtheworldor

K.Itisfineandhealthyforteenstocultivatetheirpersonalinterests,anditisgoodnewswhen

youngpeopleenjoyharmoniousrelationswiththeirfamilyandfriends.Butthereisalsoaplaceina

younglifefornoblepurposesthatincludeadedicationtothebroadersociety,aloveofcountryand

anaspirationtomaketheirownleadershipcontributions.

Thereare,frankly,anastonishingnumberofexceptionalcollegesanduniversitiesinAmerica,

andforanygivenstudent,thereareanumberofschoolsthatareagreatfit.Whenstudents

becometoofixated(专注)onaparticularschoolearlyintheadmissionsprocessthatfixationcan

leadtoseveredisappointmentiftheydon'tgetinor,iftheydo,thepossibilitythattheyarenow
