Transportationisanimportantsourceofenergyconsumptionandenvironmentalpollutioninthewholesociety.AccordingtotheChinastatisticalyearbookfrom2001to2007thatthetransportationindustryhasbeenthethirdlargestenergyconsumptiononlytoindustrialandhouseholdformanyyears.Inthefivemajormodesoftransportation,watertransportationhastheminimumton-kmenergyconsumptionandproducefeweremissionsofpollutantsandeasytohandle.Butinthefivemajormodesoftransportationinourcountry,thewatertransportationhasbeeninthefourthforallthetime.Atpresent,China'slogisticscostishigherthantheEuropeanandAmericancountriesby10%,ifYangtzeriverregionthataccountsforhalfofChinaeconomyappropriatelyraisetheproportionofwatertransportcargovolume,theenergyconsumptionofthewholelogisticsindustryandlogisticscostwillreduceaccordingly.Thelowenergyconsumption,lesswastecharacteristicsofthewatertransportationaremoresuitableforenvironmentalprotection.
