seven-monthspantounderstandhowtheirorganizationsareimplementinggenAI

solutionsacrosstheirSAPplatformsanddata(see“Studyapproachandmethodology”onpage20).

OurresultsrevealadistinctiveadvantageforthoseorganizationswiththemostmaturecapabilitiesinSAP-specificgenerativeAI.Theyexperienceaboostinprofitability,

outpacingtheirpeers.OrganizationsintegratinggenAIstrategicallyacrossbusinessareas—versususingapiecemealapproach—areparticularlyfarahead.

ExecutivesincreasinglyrecognizethevalueinlinkingSAPsystemstoAI.MorethanhalfofgenerativeAIspendisbeingdirectedtoSAP-specificinitiatives,ourresearchshows.Infact,56%ofexecutivessaytheyplantodivertspendingfromotherbudgetareastoSAP-specificgenAI,withone-thirdsayingthatSAPsystemsholdthemostdatacriticaltotheirsuccess.TheseencouragingfindingssuggestAIinnovationleveragingSAP

environmentsareanaturalcomplement,servingasafoundationforasecurity-rich,centralizedplatformfordatamanagementandcollaboration.AhybridcloudSAP

architectureprovidesaccesstoexpensiveGPUsonlywhenneeded,aswellastheflexibilityandscalabilitytoswitchbetweenmodelsandservices.

WhileorganizationstypicallydeploytheirSAPsystemsinmultipleenvironments,

manyareincreasinglyoptingforacloudorhybriddeploymenttogainscalabilityandintegrationcapabilities.3ExecutivesreporttheirSAPsystemsareeitherhosted

inahybridenvironmentcomprisingcloudandon-premisesresources(41%)orarefullyhostedinthecloud(42%).

saythearchitecturehashelpedthemmovefasterwiththeirgenAIinitiativesversus12%whosayitisslowingthemdown;therestreportnoimpact(seeFigure1).

Nearlytwo-thirds(60%)saytheirSAPinfrastructureisnowoptimizedtosupport

theirSAP-specificgenAIgoals.ThoseorganizationswiththemostadvancedSAPcloudarchitectures—includingRISEwithSAPandSAPS/4HANA—areexperiencing10%higherrevenuegrowththanthosewithlessmaturearchitectures.

Forthosenotfullyoncloud,theurgencyisreal.Manyorganizations(67%)runningSAPareacceleratingthatprocessspecificallytocapturethebenefitsofSAP-specificgen

AI.Thisisupfrom59%inMarch2024,suggestingthatexecutivesseetheneedforgenAI-readycloudinfrastructuretounlockSAPsystempotential(seecasestudy,“‘Speaking’financewithgenerativeAI”).

Financespeaksitsownlanguage.Withoutpropercontext,common

financetermssuchasforecast,revenue,sales,andvolumehavevariousmeaningsacrosstheenterprise.Foralargeenergycompany,the

compoundterm“forecastedvolume”means58differentthingswithintheorganization.So,usingnaturallanguagemodelsintheSAPfinancedomainwasnotgoingtowork.GenerativeAIneededatranslatorto

sensiblyrespondtofinance-specificqueries.

Enterexplicitlanguagemodels(ELMs)—anapplieduseoffinanceprocessesandgenAItechnologiestoenablenaturallanguage

processingoffinancedata.IBMisbuildingthisnovelapproachsothat

theenergycompany’semployeescanusebusiness-specifictermssuchas“CostofGoodsSold(COGS)”tointeractwithSAPdata.Inearly

testing,thisinnovationisprovingeffectiveatstreamliningstandard,

oftenlabor-intensivefinanceprocessesandreports.Similarfinance-

specificgenerativeAIapplicationsenabledthroughSAPHRcapabilitiesmoreefficientlytranslaterequirementsfromstatementsofworktojobandworkforcerequirements.

WhenSAP-specificgenerativeAItoolsspeakthelanguageoffinance,

manyofthemosttime-intensiveprocessesinthefinancedomaincanbeautomated,orpartiallyautomated.Thisallowsfinanceprofessionalstofocusonwhatmattersmost:themeaningbehindthemessagesandthelarger-pictureimplicationsfortheorganization.

Similarprocessimprovementsareplayingoutinotherfinance-adjacentareas.IBMandSAPhaveretailsolutionsthatleveragereal-timedata

processingandAI-assisteddecision-makingthatintegratedistributionneedswithinstructionsgiventotransportationmanagementproviders.ThesesolutionsrelyonAImodelsthatcontinuouslyassesstime-series

PreviousresearchfromtheIBMIBVfoundthatexecutivesincreasinglyvaluesoftskillsovertechnicalskills.Dataliteracyandmachinelearningfundamentalssuchasmodeltrainingandpromptengineeringare,ofcourse,corecapabilities.Butexecutivesrankproblemsolving/crisisresolutionastheskillaffectedthemostbytheemergenceof

generativeAI.Businesscommunicationandagilityarenextonthelist.5

Inournewsurvey,69%ofexecutivessaytheirorganizationhastherightskillsto

extractvaluequicklyfromtheirSAP-specificgenerativeAIinitiatives,up14

percentagepointsfromfourmonthsearlier.Similarly,58%considertheirAItalentandskillstobeexceptionalorbest-in-class.AmongthosethathavesuccessfullyembeddedorintegratedSAP-specificgenAIacrossmultiplebusinessfunctions,92%saytheyhavethenecessarygenAItalentandskills(seeFigure2).

OrganizationsofalltypescanfilltheAIskillsgapsthroughfocusedreskilling,hiring,andworkingwithbusinesspartners.GenAIcanhelpHRleadersmoreefficiently

identifyandquicklypreparefordiscussionswithpotentialrecruits.What’smore,genAIitselfcanhelprampupskillsbyacceleratingadaptive,personalizedlearning.Forexample,itisalreadyrevolutionizingcorporatefinancetrainingbyenabling

personalizedlearningexperiencesthroughtutorspoweredbylargelanguagemodels

(LLMs)thatadapttoeachlearner’space,style,andcomprehensionlevel(seePerspective,“AIreshapesfinancework”).Andthisapproachcanbeappliedtovirtuallyanybusinessarea,includingtechnology.

Organizationsshouldalsofocusonalleviatingemployees’concernsaboutbeing

replacedbyAI,emphasizingthatAIisintendedtohelpthemworkfasterandsmarter,nottaketheirjobs.6OfferingemployeeswaystoexperimentwithSAPdataandgenAItools—withpropersecurityprecautionsandgovernanceinplace—cansparkcreativityandconfidenceaswellasgreaterbuy-inandultimatelygreatersuccess.

strategy,controlling,andanalysisarethemostimpactedareas,whereAItoolsare

helpingtoautomateroutinetasks,improvespeedandaccuracy,andprovideanalyticalsupport.Bytakingcareofmundanetasks,AIfreesthefinanceteamtoperformthe

next-levelanalysisontransactionsandreportsforstrategicdecision-making.

Theresearchconfirmsthathumanskillsarestillneededforcriticalthinkingandethics,problem-solving,andcreativity.ButitalsorevealswhereAIislikelytotakeovertasksthatpeoplecurrentlyperform,suchasassetvaluation.AreaswherehumanjudgmentisnotrequiredtoaslargeadegreewillexperiencetheimpactofAIsooner.

GenAIintroducesanentirelynewrealmofethicalandtrustconsiderations—whichmeansorganizationsneedupdatedgovernance,risk,andcompliancemeasures.

Leaderscan’tfocusononlywhatgenAIcando.Theymusttalkaboutwhatitshoulddo.Issensitivedataprotected?Doestrainingdatarespectcopyrights?Areoutputsbiasedorjustwrong?8

GenerativeAIgovernancechallengestranscendtheentireenterprise.Buteven

high-qualityERPdatamayhavehiddenbiases—ortheAImodelitselfcanintroduce

biasesbasedonhowit’strained.Organizationsneedasolidunderstandingofhowthemodelarrivesatthecontentitcreates.Meanwhile,thedataandthemodelsmustbe

protectedfromemergingcyberthreatsthatcanalterbothinputsandoutputsformaliciousintent.9

Thesechallengesmaybehinderingadoption:thepercentageofexecutiveswhosaidtheywillforegothebenefitsofSAP-specificgenAIbecauseofethicsconcernssurgedfrom26%inMarch2024to65%inJuly2024(seeFigure3).Thispivotsuggestsan

urgentneedfortightergenAIgovernanceandexplainswidespreadadoptionbySAPandothersofUNESCO’s10guidingprinciplesforethicsinAI.10

Toincreaseenterpriseawarenessofethicalandregulatoryissuesandestablish

actionsforhowtoaddresstheirimpacts,organizationsneedtoestablisha

comprehensivegenAIgovernanceframework.EmergingAIregulationssuchastheEUAIActoffermoreclarityarounddegreesofriskandcorrespondingresponsibleAIrequirements.11EnterprisesthatalreadyfacedynamicregulatoryenvironmentsarebetterpositionedtounderstandthetaskofSAP-specificgenAIgovernance.

AIgovernanceshouldenablebroadoversightandcontroloverAIsystems.

AIgovernancebestpracticesmustextendbeyondsimplycomplyingwithregulationstoencompassingamorerobustsystemformonitoringandmanagingAIapplications.ForenterprisesusingSAPsystems,thatcanmeanupdatingfunctionalworkflowstoaccountforthenewguidanceandbuildinginflexibilitytoadaptasregulationsunfold.

AIgovernanceshouldalsoenablebroadoversightandcontroloverAIsystems.

Examplesofelementstoincludearevisualdashboardsthatprovidereal-timeupdatesonthehealthandstatusofAIsystems,automatedmonitoringandperformancealerts

formodelbiasanddrift,andaudittrails.12

Mostexecutives(70%)saytheirorganizationshaveclearpoliciesabouttheproperuseofgenAI.ThatincludesnotallowingSAPdatatobeusedinpubliclyavailablegenAI

tools.Thesearepositivefirststeps,butpoliciesanddirectionarenotasstrongasformalgovernancestructures.OrganizationsmustbuildaninternalculturefocusedonresponsibleAI,embracingemployeeeducation,championingethicsteamsandpolicies,andeagerlyrespondingasregulatoryrequirementsevolve.13

Investinthesweetspots

OrganizationsarebettingongenAItounleashtheimmense,transformational

potentialoftheirSAPsystems.Theyareconsideringatreasuretroveofchoicesfor

SAP-specificgenerativeAIusecasesacrossbusinessareas—fromcustomerservice

tofinancetoHRtomarketing—andarenarrowingthelistbasedonfeasibilityandvalue(seeFigure4).

ExecutivessaygenAIusecaseswiththehighestvaluefallinareaswiththelargest

employeepopulations,suchascustomerservice(53%),supplychain(51%),andsales

andmarketing(47%).Similarly,theyconsiderusecasesinthesesamebusinessfunctionstobethemostfeasible.

GenAIcanhavesignificantimpactonproductivityintheseareas.Forexample,

anAI-poweredassistantforautomotivewarrantyclaimscanacceleratethewarrantyprocessforbothconsumersanddealersbypre-fillingformsandschedulingthe

inspectionsatthenearestdealership.Likewise,embeddinggenAIintosupplychainplanningtoolscanequipemployeeswithapersonalassistantthatanswersqueries

bypullingdatafromtheSAPplatformandothersources,expeditingdecision-making.

Insalesandmarketing,genAIcanstreamlinecreationofpersonalizedcommunicationsandothercontent.

WhilegenAIsolutionsarestillintheearlydaysofimplementation,theuseofSAP

systemsisalreadyboostingoperatingmargins(seeFigure5).Wedevelopedanindexthatassessesthestrengthoforganizations’SAP-specificgenAIbusinessand

technicalcapabilities,includingtheirAIstrategyandvision,dataandtechnology,

talentandskills,engineeringandoperations,operatingmodel,andorganization.

Wefoundthemostmatureorganizationsexperienceanaverageof20%profitmarginscomparedtoanaverageof16%fortheirpeers.Weprojectthatpatternwillcontinue

through2026withanaverageof23%profitmarginformorematureorganizations

versusanaverageof19%fortherest.(Weobservedasimilardifferenceinprofit

marginsinthepre-generative-AIdays,whichsuggeststhatearlyAIgainshavebeenusedtofuelgenerativeAIinvestments.)

TheresultsonROIaremorenuanced.Executivesreport6.8%ROIonSAP-specific

genAIinitiatives.Ourdatashowsanaverageof48%oforganizationsaretestingusecasesacross11businessareas.GiventhecostandcomplexityofgenAIsolutions,

organizationsshouldrefinetheirinvestmentsandtakeamorestrategicapproachthatintegratesgenerativeAIintotheirSAPplatformacrossfunctionalareasratherthan

limitingittosmall,siloedareas.OrganizationsprojectmakinggenAIanintegralpartoftheiroperationsandexpecttonearlydoubletheirROIto12.2%fromgenerativeAIinvestmentsin2025.

WhileenterprisesmaybetemptedtotrytocustomizeeachfacetoftheirgenerativeAIsolutions,theyalsounderstandtheinherentadvantagesassociatedwithamore

homogeneousapproach.SAPandIBMhavedeeplyembeddedAIandgenerativeAIintobusinessprocesses,enterpriseanalytics,anddevelopmentoffutureAI-enabledsolutionsacrosstheSAPplatform.CollectivelythesesolutionsenableSAPusers

tointeractwithenterprisesystemsinmorenaturalways,askingquestionsof

andinteractingwithenterprisedatatoimprovetheirproductivity.Thegenerative

AIHubinSAPAICoreallowsAIsolutionstobedeveloped,deployed,andmanaged

inastandardized,scalablewaywithfulllifecyclemanagement,allowingorganizationstoconfidentlymakedata-drivendecisions.
