Chapter1

Theyearwas1866andtheplacewasoffthecoastofSouthAmerica.AstrangeobjectwassightedbythecrewoftheUnitedStatesfrigateAbrahamLincoln.Itwasalarge,darkmassthatwasfloatinginthewater.Thecaptainoftheship,Farragut,orderedhiscrewtoinvestigate.

Asthecrewapproachedtheobject,theysawthatitwasametallicsubmarineofenormoussize.Thesubmarineseemedtobemotionless,andtherewasnosignoflifewithinit.

Farragutorderedasmallboattobelaunched,andheandtwoofhisofficersclimbedinside.Astheyapproachedthesubmarine,amanappearedonthedeck.Hesignaledtothecrewtostop,andthetwovesselsremainedmotionlessinthewater.

ThemanspokeinEnglish,andheidentifiedhimselfasCaptainNemoofthesubmarineknownastheNautilus.NemowelcomedFarragutandhismenaboardandinvitedthemtotakeatourofthesubmarine.

AfterthetouroftheNautilus,CaptainNemoinvitedCaptainFarragutandhisofficerstodinner.Theywereservedamealoffishandotherseacreaturesthathadbeencaughtonthejourney.Nemoexplainedthathehadbeentravelingtheworld'soceansforyears,andthathehadnohomelandorallegiancetoanynation.

FarragutwasimpressedbyNemo'sknowledgeoftheseaandhispassionforexploringitsdepths.However,hewassuspiciousofthesubmarine'spurposeandthemysteriouscaptainwhocommandedit.

Thenextday,Farragutandhiscrewattemptedtoleavethearea,buttheywereattackedbyagiantkraken.Thecreaturewrappeditstentaclesaroundtheshipandtriedtodragitunderwater.However,NemoandhiscrewfromtheNautilusarrivedtorescuethemenandtodestroythekraken.

Farragutwasgratefulforthehelp,buthestillhadquestionsaboutNemo'sintentions.HedemandedtoknowwhyNemohadattackedtheshipinthefirstplace,andNemorepliedthathehadmistakenitforawhaleandhadactedinstinctively.

Farragutwasnotsatisfiedwiththeanswer,andheorderedhismentopreparetoattacktheNautilus.However,NemounleashedhistorpedoesontheAbrahamLincoln,andtheshipwasdestroyedintheresultingexplosion.

ProfessorPierreAronnaxwasanotedscientistwhowasaboardtheAbrahamLincolnwhenitwasattackedbytheNautilus.Hemanagedtoescapethesinkingshipandfoundhimselfadriftontheoceanwithtwoofhiscompanions,ConseilandNedLand.

TheywereeventuallypickedupbytheNautilus,andNemoofferedtotakethemaboardashisguests.AronnaxwasfascinatedbythetechnologyofthesubmarineandthemysteriesoftheoceanthatNemowasonamissiontoexplore.

Overthecourseoftheirjourney,Aronnaxandhiscompanionswitnessedincrediblesights,includingunderwaterforests,volcanoes,andseacreaturesofallkinds.However,AronnaxbegantogrowconcernedaboutNemo'sincreasinglyerraticbehavior.

Nemoseemedtobedrivenbyahatredofmankind,andheattackedandsankshipsindiscriminately.AronnaxtriedtoreasonwithNemo,buthewasmetwithdisdainandhostility.
