n,whichispartoftheNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministration(NOAA),highlightshowdiretheclimatecrisisisandhowitwillcontinuetoaffectChristmastrees.ThereportstatesthathightemperaturesanddroughtcanstressChristmastrees,makingthemmorevulnerabletopestsanddiseases,thatexcessiverainfallcancausefloodingandrootrot,andthatextremecoldcancausefrostdamage,dryingoutbudsandshoots.In2021,severedroughtinOregonledtothedeathofover70%ofChristmastreeseedlingsinthestatethatyear,thereportstates,duetoextremetemperaturesandverydryconditionsthatalsocompletelydriedouttheneedlesofmorematuretrees.JillSidebottomfromtheNationalChristmasTreeAssociationsaidthatwarmertemperaturescanaffectneedleretentiononChristmastrees,astheyrequirecoldtemperaturestoremaindormant.Withwarmerautumns,treesstruggletoholdtheirneedleslonger.“Thosetreeshavetohavecoldtemperatures,”shesaid.HurricaneHeleneinSeptembercausedcatastrophicfloodingandhistoricrainfallinNorthCarolina,leadingtoapproximately$125minlossesofornamentalnurseriesandChristmastrees,thereportstates.Inattempttoadapttotheincreasingchallengesposedbyclimatechange,researchersacrossthecountryhavebeenstudyingfraserfirsandothervarietiesofChristmastreestoenhancetheirresiliencetoclimate-relatedstresses.BillLindberg,aMichiganStateUniversityExtensionChristmastreeeducator,notedthatyoungtreesfacechallengesduringdroughts.Hesaidthatthroughresearch,they’vefoundthatirrigationmanagementandusingwoodchipstoincreasesoilmoisturecanactasshort-termsolutionsinMichigan.Long-termeffortsincludeexploringtreespeciesthatmaythrivebetterinawarmer,drierclimate,Lindbergsaid.Researchersarealsoconductinggeneticresearchandbreedingprograms.“ScientistsarehopingtohelptheindustrybyproducingChristmastreesthatareabletoacclimateandbemoreresilienttothethreatsofclimatechange,”thereportfromNOAAstates.TheNorthCarolinaStateUniversityChristmastreegeneticsprogramhasspentdecadesworkingtodevelop“elite”fraserfirtreescapableofwithstandingtheseclimate-relatedimpacts.JustinWhitehill,theprogramlead,saidthattheirprimaryfocusishelpingthetreesadapt,sothatthey“continuetothriveandsurvive”.Thisinvolvesatraditionalbreedingapproach,hesaid,whichcanbeslow,asitcantake20to30yearsforfraserfirstoproducepollenorcones.Toacceleratetheprocess,Whitehillsaidthattheytestthetrees,andtheexistinggeneticsinvariousenvironments,“evaluatingtheirperformancesbasedonhowtheyperformatdifferentelevationsandhowthegeneticscorrelatewiththosedifferentenvironments”.“Insteadofjustlettingthetreessortoffigureitoutontheirown–whichisthenaturalapproach–we’reartificiallyhelpingthetreesbyidentifyingtheonesthattendtodobetterinthesenewerclimatesandnewerconditions,andtrytopushthoseforwardtothenextgenerationusingsomewhatadvancedmethods,”hesaid.GeneticmodificationisanothermethodbeingconsideredforadaptingChristmastreestotheclimatecrisis,Whitehillsaid,butwhileit’ssomethingtheyareconsideringandthinkingabout,theyarestill“prettyfarofffromthatrightnow”,hesaid.WhilethechangingclimateisposingchallengesforthegrowthofChristmastrees,Whitehillstated:“We’renotatthepointyetwheretheskyisfalling.”“Likeanyothercropwehaveoutthere,whetheritbecorn,soybean,anyspeciesreally,therearechallenges,andtheyarehappeningfasterthanwhatmostofthespeciesweworkwithcanadaptwith,butwe’reuptothetask,”hesaid.“Therearepeopleworkingonit,we’reaware,andwe’regoingtohavesomethingtokeeptheindustrysolventa
