startedbyaccidentinthe1970-71schoolyearandcontinueduntilIstopped

classroomteachingin2001—thirtyyearsofcelebrating!Byaconservative

estimate,Iaskedoneofthesequestionsatthebeginningofclassabout

twenty-seventhousandtimes.AndeverytimeIasked,Igotfiveormorepositive

responses.That'salotofcelebrating!

Believeitornot,thislittleritualstartedastheresultoftwothingsthatusuallyhavea

negativeconnotation,especiallywithkids:currenteventsandhomework.Atthehigh

schoollevelIoftentaughtcoursesinUnitedStateshistoryandinAmerican

government.WheneverItaughteitherofthesetwosubjects,therewasanightly

homeworkassignmentincurrentevents.Theaveragehighschoolkidiswoefully

uninformedaboutanythingunrelatedtomusic,sports,andotherformsof

entertainment,soreadingtheactualnewssectionofanewspaperwasacompletely

newexperienceformostofthem.

Withinafewweekstheygotthehangofitandwereactuallysurprisedattheirnewly

developedabilitytocarryonanintelligentconversationaboutwhatwasgoingonin

aworldtheyhardlyknew.Justasweweresettlingintoourroutine,astudentts

innocentobservationjoltedme.Hesaid,°Youknow,Dr.Urban,forbeingsucha

positiveguy,yousuregiveanegativehomeworkassignment.Somewhatstartled,I

repliedwith,“Whatdoyoumean?"Hesimplystatedthatmostofthenewswas
