followingyearUndertheGreenwoodTreebroughtHardypopularpraiseforthefirsttime.Aswith

mostofhisfictionalworks,thisnovelincorporatedrealplacesaroundDorsetintotheplot,

includingthevillageschoolthatHardyattended.AfterUndertheGreenwoodTreecamea

serializednovelAPairofBlueEyes.OncemoreHardydrewuponreallife,andthenovelmirrors

hisromancewithEmma.

HardyfollowedthiswithFarFromtheMaddingCrowd,setinPuddletown,nearhis

birthplace.ThisnovelfinallyearnedHardythesuccessthatenabledhimtogiveuphis

architecturalpracticeandconcentrateonlyonwriting.

TheHardyslivedinLondonforashorttime,theninYeovil,theninSturminsterNewton,

whichHardydescribedas4Uidyllic(田园诗般的)ItwasatSturminsterNewtonthathepenned

TheReturnoftheNative,oneofhismostenduring(持久的)works.

In1887,HardypublishedTheWoodlander,astoryconcerninganhonestwoodsmanina

smallvillage.Thenin1891oneofhisbestworks,Tessofthed'Urbervilles,cameout,whichwas

setprimarilyintheEnglishcountrysideduringthe19thcentury.

Tessofthed'Urbervillesexcitedinterest,buthisnextwork,JudetheObscure(1895),threw
